11 Historical Roots The world s oldest planning school. The Department of Civic Design was founded in 1909 through a deed of gift from William Hesketh Lever (later the first Viscount Leverhulme of the Western Isles) following his success in a libel action against the Daily Mail. He declared it: a boon to future generations that there should be an opportunity of training men to a full knowledge of the best possible methods of Town Planning and Civic Design

17 Alternative Routes into Planning Gain a qualification accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Complete two years of relevant practical experience with an appropriate employer Apply for membership of the RTPI, thus becoming a Chartered Town Planner Entitled to use post-nominals MRTPI RTPI member can practice independently as a professional town planner/consultant

35 Some Concluding Thoughts Planning is an attractive first degree subject, little recognised beyond Geography A level students Liverpool is an exciting place to be Liverpool programmes have a strong emphasis on solving complex real-world planning problems Planning requires skilled individuals to make informed but difficult decisions Many skills are readily transferable to other fields There will be plenty of job opportunities! Liverpool is the ideal place in which to study planning and to take the first steps towards a career as a professional planner...
