Club El Nogal, Bogotá, Colombia Monday 20th and Tuesday 21th, October 2014 The Centre for Sustainable Development Studies Colombia is hosting, the VII International Environmental Congress, on the 20th and 21st October 2014 in Bogotá, Colombia. The topic will be: Sustainable Development Initiatives and the Role of the Financial and Corporate World In the attempt to satisfy our modern lifestyles, humanity is pushing the planet to its boundaries threatening life-sustaining ecosystems and the economy. Historically, environmental impacts such as climate change and the destruction of fragile ecosystems have been accepted consequences of economic growth, but it is becoming increasingly clear so the transition to a green economy is more than necessary right now. Development of a sustainable business model in the business and financial sector must be accelerated to begin the shift to a post-carbon economy.. 01

4 CONGRESS THEMES 1 THE IMPORTANCE OF GREEN BUSINESS FOR MEETING OUR CLIMATE GOALS 2 Private enterprise must play a major role in the development of a green economy and critically important reductions of greenhouse gases. Many examples give evidence on the possibility of reconciling economic success and sustainable management. 4 THE ROLE OF THE FINANCIAL WORLD IN BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY The financial sector has an active participation to create a green economy and at the same time in the creation of more jobs. In the same way it has to identify and evaluate the environmental and social risks that present their investment projects. THE ROLE OF LEADERSHIP IN CREATING A GREEN LOW CARBON ECONOMY 3 New directions in leadership are necessary in order to face challenges of resource security, climate change, changing demographics and increasing inequality. This session will explore innovative and pragmatic approaches that decision makers can take to reconcile profitability and sustainability. 5 INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIVE INITIATIVES FOR FOSTERING A GREEN ECONOMY AND TO MEET CLIMATE GOALS International Cooperative Initiatives are a valuable tool in order to achieve the effective and efficient consolidation of sustainable development projects. The main characteristics of these initiatives are their ability to dynamize processes, build institutional capacity, mobilize international funds and share experiences as well as provide technology and innovation. SPECIAL SECTORS AND RELEVANT THEMES REGARDING A GREEN ECONOMY MARITIME TRANSPORT & PORT OPERATIONS The shipping industry is facing big challenges due to the negative impacts it produced on the environment as well as in the communities where it is operating. The latest initiatives explore the best way of responding to these challenges in order to have sustainable operations. AGRICULTURE A sustainable agriculture seeks to guarantee food security but at the same time reduce the negative impacts of the emissions of the climate pollutants. The continuous research in new innovative technologies is key to accomplish these goals. RENEWABLE ENERGIES AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY Renewable energy and energy efficiency are valuable tools for combatting climate change. It is necessary to boost dialogues and spread knowledge and good practices in order to facilitate its adequate implementation in developing countries MINING, OIL AND GAS The mining and energy resources are essential for economic development and growth, at the same time mining exploitation generates negative social and environmental impacts. The big challenge is to promote an environmentally and socially responsible model. GREEN TRANSPORTATION Transportation systems have significant impacts on the environment, accounting for between 20 and 25% of the world s energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Green and sustainable transport systems seek to make a positive contribution to the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of the communities they serve. 03
