3 1. Introduction SOFY license manager (SOFLM) is the software to secure, manage and log the usage of MSC.SOFY products and/or features to a central license server. Some of the key features of SOFLM are: - Feature based licensing - Support to individual and token based licensing - Redundancy to avoid the users from server down or maintenance problems - Detail usage logs for further analysis - Separate tool (sofadmin) to administer the license managers from a remote machine. Typically used to monitor current usage and to fetch log files 2. Installation Supported Platforms: UNIX: Sun, SGI, HP Windows: NT, 2000 (This document is for UNIX platforms only) Please contact MSC Software Corporation for additional information Installation: Note: If you have the daemon (soflmd) already running, please stop it using the soflm stop command prior to the above installation. Copy the soflm_<platform>.tar.gz file to the directory where you wish to install the server. Use the following commands to extract: > gzip d soflm_hp.tar.gz or gunzip soflm_hp.tar.gz > tar xvf soflm_hp.tar Files get extracted in the same directory. If soflm is the directory of extraction, following is the file structure after extraction: - soflm --- soflmd (License manager daemon) --- soflm (Script to start/stop/ the server) --- license.dat (Copy license file here) SOFLM License Manager Support Document Page 3 of 7

4 Repeat the above installation procedure on each of the redundant servers. License file (license.dat) is ed separately. Please copy the license file in the above directory. Important: Please edit license.dat file as follows: Modify the HOST_NAME and IP to this machine (server) hostname and IP address. SERVER { HOST_NAME = servername (your machine name) IP = (your machine IP) PORT = HOST_ID = KEY = R.3H3)s5pQ,!d@(Vm\l5mp)_ } Important: Edit the soflm script and set SOFLM_DIR to your directory of installation. 5 3. Using the License Manager Commands are issued to the license manager daemon through the script soflm. Following are the environment variables set in the soflm script: SOFY_LICENSE_FILE: Points to the license file [license.dat] SOFY_USAGE_LOG: Points to the Sofy usage log file [SofyUsage.log] SOFY_SERVER_USAGE_LOG: Points to the server usage log file [SofyServerUsage.log] soflm commands: soflm: SOFY License Manager Usage : soflm start : Start the license manager soflm stop : Stop the license manager soflm reset : Reset all licenses in the server soflm activeusers : Log current license usage soflm start: - Reads the license file - Checks authenticity of the server - Starts the license manager - License server will not start on a machine if any other redundant server is already running and serving a different license file. In this case you will have to stop all the servers, copy the correct license file on all the machines and start them one by one. soflm stop: - Stops the license manager on this machine soflm reset: - Sets the number of licenses to zero on all the servers - reset is a delayed command. Servers will actually reset after a delay of poll time. soflm activeusers: - Displays details of the features served by the license manager like Expires on, Num of license in use, etc. - Also displays current usage of each license in detail. You can see who has checked out which feature for how long and so on. Note: At least 2 of 3, 3 of 5, servers must be up and running at a time to successfully serve MSC.SOFY users. 6 4. The License File MSC.Sofy license file is an ASCII partly encrypted file. License file is generated by MSC Software Corporation Information to Request a License File To request a license file, please send the following details of the servers to SOFY Technologies (e.g. Suppose you plan to have 3 redundant servers): hostname IP Hostid Server 1 Server 2 Server 3 Command to get the hostid of a UNIX machine is: Sun: hostid HPUX: uname -i SGI: hostid 4.2. Modifying the Poll Time To modify the polling (heart beat) time please edit the license file and set the POLL_TIME_IN_SECS parameter to the desired one. e.g. POLL_TIME_IN_SECS = 900 sets the polling time to 900 seconds (15 minutes). Please note that the license manager ignores a polling time of less than 60 seconds or greater than 900 seconds. Polling time is forced to 60 seconds and 900 seconds respectively in these cases Updating the license file - Stop the license managers on each of the redundant servers by issuing the command soflm stop - Copy (replace) the license file (license.dat) on each of these servers - Restart the license managers on each of the redundant servers by issuing the command soflm start. 7 5. Setting soflm to Automatically Start on Bootup If the following is done, SOFLM will automatically start when the machine boots up. At the Client The clients, MSC.SOFY users, will have to set the SOFY_SERVERS environment variable to checkout and log the usage. It can be set as: setenv SOFY_SERVERS bud:55335 coors:55335 labatt:55335 where, bud, coors and labatt are the servers and is the port set for these servers If a client cannot resolve the names of the license servers (usually the case for Windows clients), IP addresses can be used instead as follows: UNIX: setenv SOFY_SERVERS : : :4244 Windows: set SOFY_SERVERS= : : :4244 Note: This environment variable is set in the script, which brings up MSC.SOFY.
