2 e Aim of the Conference Background We seek to use our common history as a basis for cooperation between our respective countries. We share common interests and challenges with regards to documentation and preservation of the thing sites themselves. ere is also a common need for the development of information systems for visitors, schools, tourists, and the general public. e aim of the conference is to identify possible projects, locate suitable funding institutions and programs and develop a basis for joint applications to the EU. You will find a detailed program for the conference enclosed in this invitation. We hope you will join us, and look forward to hearing from you! Gulatinget in the County of Sogn and Fjordane, Norway, was the largest regional medieval parliament, ing, in the Viking era, and one of the oldest ing Sites in the Nordic Countries. is parliament was in session from at least 900 A.D. until about 1300 A.D. During this period there was frequent contact between the countries around the North Sea. Gulatinget is the chosen Millennium site for the County of Sogn and Fjordane, and a memorial park is established in commemoration of Gulatinget. A board has been established to develop the site further, as well as to raise awareness of this medieval institution and historic landmark. Hull has a Ph.D. in tourism geography from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is presently associate director of the New Zealand Tourism Research Institute and a senior lecturer at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Hull is also a visiting professor at the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre in Akureyri, Iceland. In addition, he is co-founder John S. Hull of Intervale Associates, Inc., a consulting company based in eastern Canada. His recent projects and research have focused on sustainable tourism in peripheral regions, strategic tourism planning and destination development, tourism and climate change, and port readiness planning for the cruise ship industry.

5 e ing Sites of the North Atlantic e medieval ing Sites and their parliaments are places and institutions of significant political, historic and cultural value. ey represent the onset of civil society based on law and order, as well as an early movement towards democratic practices. And these institutions date back a thousand years. During the medieval period there was extensive contact between the countries in the Nordic and North European region. In view of this tradition the board of Gulatinget now seeks contact with other ing Sites in the Nordic and North European region, to explore the potential and interest for cooperation through a ing Site Network. We have registered a great interest in the prospect of working together, and are glad to welcome delegates from Iceland, Scotland, Shetland, e Orkneys, Isle of Man, e Fareo Island and Greeland to the conference.
