INTRODUCTION Solos for Young Violinists is a six volume series of music books with companion compact disks and cassette tapes featuring more than 50 pieces for violin and piano. Many of the works in this collection have long been recognized as stepping stones to the major violin repertoire, while others are newly published pieces which offer further choices for study; most are recorded in this series for the very first time. Compiled, edited and recorded by violinist Barbara Barber, Solos for Young Violinists is a graded series of works ranging from elementary to advanced levels and represents an exciting variety of styles and techniques for violinists. The collection has become a valuable resource for teachers and students of all ages. The piano track recorded on the second half of each recording gives the violinist the opportunity to practice with accompaniments. Abbreviations and Symbols L.H. Lower Half U.H. - Upper Half Fr. - Frog Tip - Tip Mid. - Middle A - Half Step + - Left Hand Pizzicato Finger remains on string n - Finger covers 2 strings To facilitate page turns, the pieces in this book do not appear in the same order as the recordings.
Sim~le Folk Songs f6r violin and piano Arranged by Barbara~arber u Simple Folk Songs for violin and piano are arrangements of folk songs taken from Volume 7 of the Concord Series published by the E. C. Schirmer Music Company in Each "piece," as it should be referred to when being played on violin, is preceded by a preparatory scale which introduces a new finger pattern. The lyrics at the end of each selection are provided not necessarily as a learning device, but only as a point of interest and to indicate the style in which each should be played. 1. French Folk Song Playing Ball on the Stairs Preparatory Scale: A Major 1 legato Moderato J = 98 n? mf legato V I l l 7 Here is a staircase so steep and so tall; Here in my hand is a red rubber ball; See how I nuke it go hippity-hop! See how I throw it way up to the top! Here it comes down again, cloppiv-clop!
Preparatory Scale: D Major 2. English Folk Song The Old Woman and the Peddler Allegretto d = 64 (lift) n \I (lift) There was an old woman, as I've heard tell, Fa, la, la la la la la! She- went to market her eggs to sell, Fa, la, la la la la la! She went to market as I've heard say, Fa, la, la la la la la! She- fell asleep on the King's highway, Fa, la, la la la la la!
3. Bohemian Folk Song November Preparatory Scale: E Minor (Natural Minor) Andante d = 48 n Cone are the swallows fromfield and hill; Where robins sang all the trees are still; Woods are bare everywhere; Loud cries the bluejay behind the mill; Where the dry dead leaves lie; Where robins sang all the trees are still.
Preparatory Scale: G Major (2 octaves) 4. Welsh Air All Through the Night 9 - f poco rit. 13 mp rit. Sleep my child, and peace attend thee, All thro' the night; Guardian angels God will send thee, All thro' the night. Soft the drowsy hours are creeping, Hill and vale in slumber steeping, I my loving watch am keeping, All thro' the night.
5. French Folk Song Good Pierrot Preparatory Scale: A Major (2 octaves)? Allegro moderato d = 82 poco rit. Good Pierrot, befriend me, In the moonshine bright! Your quill-pen attend me, So that I may write. Blown out is my candle, Myjre will not go; Turn the big door handle, Let me in, Pierrot!
6. Bohemian Folk Song Winter Preparatory Scale: E Major Allegretto J = 86 n 1 J I (lift) 1 I I I - - I I I I I I I I. I n (lift) n poco rit. All the winter long the trees are bare; Not a green leafflutters anywhere; Winds from icy regions blow, Down the hillside drifis the snow; Crows and squirrels ask for scraps of bread; One would think the river frozen dead!
7. Russian Folk Song Caterpillar! Caterpillar! Preparatory Scale: F Major Allegro con spirit0 J = 94 mf 13 poco rit. Caterpillar! Caterpillar! You are such a pretty sight. Caterpillar! Caterpillar! Blue and yellow, black and white. Take care what you do, Robins are a-hunting you; Take care what you do, Sparrows are a-chasing you!
