2 GROWTH CHARTS PURPOSE The intent of this document is to inform and instruct HealthTeam staff and providers on the use of the Growth Charts in Centricity EMR 9.2 when treating HealthTeam patients up to 20 years of age. 3 GROWTH CHARTS View and assess the height, weight, and other growth-related values recorded in the charts of HealthTeam patients up to 20 years of age using the Growth Chart utility in Centricity EMR 9.2. You can study this information plotted on various reference graphs supplied by the CDC ( toggle between units of measure, compare percentiles, and more. Available Growth Charts The growth charts in Centricity EMR 9.2 are gender-specific, and they can be varied by gestational age at birth. Data points appear as either purple or gray; purple points represent values entered in chart updates already signed, and gray points reflect values in chart updates either In Progress or On Hold. Overall, the growth charts available are as follows: Infants (0 36 months) Weight for age Length for age Weight for length Head circumference for age Children (2 20 years) Weight for age Stature for age Weight for stature (2 5 years) BMI versus age Accessing Growth Charts You can view growth charts in Centricity EMR 9.2 from any tab in the patient s record. 1. In the patient s chart, click the Graph button; this opens the Graph Observations window. 2. Now in Graph Observations, click the Growth Chart button, in the upper right corner of that window. NOTE: Click only once on the button; the program processes the request and checks it against specific parameters before displaying results. Michigan State University EMR Page 1 of 4

4 3. The Growth Chart window opens, displaying the patient s recorded values in the default growth chart view. Because the patient (Benjamin) is a male and older than 36 months, the default growth chart displayed is that of Boys Stature vs. Age. Growth Chart Features Click the Maximize button, in the far upper right corner of the Growth Chart window, to expand the growth chart displayed to the entire computer screen. To return to the main Centricity EMR window, click the minimize window button. In the upper right portion of the Growth Chart window you may see a small, dog-eared yellow Notes icon. Single-click on the Notes icon to see the patient s most current Past Medical History. If the is nothing recorded for the patient s Past Medical Record observation, this feature is unavailable. 5 Views, Display Size, and Data-point Details The main portion of the Growth Chart window provides the means to control the size of that window, and also to quickly access the details of a selected data point. Click on a data point to see its details. Use the Zoom tools to screen s level of magnification. Move from one graph to the next using the pink Change Graph arrows. The arrows pointing to the right and left help you navigate between the previous, current, and next graph in the given series. Click the pink arrow pointing down to move to a different growth chart series. The two series available in Centricity EMR 9.2 are: 1) 0 36 months, and 2) 2 20 years. Click directly on a plotted point to see details of that entry. Click the Zoom tool to increase or decrease the size of the display. Toggle from one graph to the next using the pink arrows. (Ex: Stature vs. Age to The Right-Click Pop-Up Menu Right-click in the Growth Chart window to open a list of display options. To select one of those options, click with the left mouse button directly on it, and Centricity EMR 9.2 modifies the growth chart accordingly. Easily move between views by selecting one of the options in the pop-up menu. If the Gestational age at birth is changed to something other than Full Term, that age (in weeks) is displayed in the lower portion of the resulting growth chart. 6 The right-click pop-up menu also provides a means by which the reference curve of the growth chart can be shifted to that of a patient with Down Syndrome. Percentiles in Table Format In the main Growth Chart window, clicking the Percentiles button lets you view patient data in a table format, and print that information, if desired. Use the Gest. Age dropdown arrow to shift the reference curves if the patient was born less than full term. Options available range from 24 weeks to 40 weeks, with 40 weeks being considered full term. When the Gest. Age is modified, the patient s recorded values of height and weight are re-evaluated, with the subsequent percentiles displayed accordingly. NOTE: Changing the Gest. Age in the Percentiles table does not permanently change that patient s gestational age overall; the change is only during your current working session in the Percentiles window. Printing Percentiles in Table Format Print the table-formatted growth chart, with the parameters you have selected, by clicking the Print button. The printed version includes the same patient information as appears across the system-generated Growth Chart table view, including the patient s name, age, date of birth, MRN, and gestational age at birth.
