PRESS CHARGES 1) Look at our success rates (Fall 2011 Summer 2012) Findings: 83% Passed 83% 2) Do something to improve the outcome PASS RATE BASELINE

WHY DON T WE HAVE What our team looked at: EXTERNAL factors (transportation, funding, family issues, etc. ) INTERNAL factors POLICIES (class location/time, instructors, class hours, etc.) (attendance, grading, prerequisites)

CHECKING the BASELINE DATA DATES FALL 2011 thru SUMMER2012 Adjusted Enrollment (not including NS and W) Satisfactory S (Pass) No Grade NG (Failure) % of NG who exceeded absences Low grades (83%) 32 (17%) 25 (78%) 7 (22%) ADDITIONAL ABSENCE ADDED DATES Adjusted Enrollment Satisfactory S (Pass) No Grade NG (Failure) % of NG who exceeded absences Low grades FALL (74%) 22 (26%) 14 (64%) 8 (36%) NS W S NG No Show never came to class Student withdrew before 10% date Satisfactory grade (Pass) No Grade (did not pass)

Problems to be ADDRESSED Lower enrollment High failure rate from absences

OUR STRATEGY

STRATEGIES Eliminated prerequisite Intro to Nursing Assistant Added Info Sessions (8/2012) GOAL Increase enrollment GOAL Decrease the number of students failing the program with a NG (No Grade) due to absences Added one additional absence (8/2012) Added the Medical Extension Policy (1/2013) Added Excused Absences (1/2013) Revised passing grade from 78% to 75% (5/2013)

Are not what you EXPECT

ATTENDANCE DATA 35 From Low Grades From Absences Total No Grades Fall 2011 thru Summer 2012 Fall 2012 Spring 2013 Summer 2013 Base Line Data Added 1 Additional Absence Added Medical Extension & Changed passing grade Excuse Absences from 78% to 75%

THE PLAN

WHY Stay the Course? Accountability We want to have a standard that is similar to the working environment Tracking more absences/make-up work is time-consuming For those students who are successful, they have a high pass rate on the state certification exam. (95% Written 91% Skills) Too soon to see a trend

EXTRA STUFF Grade failures went down Fast track is most successful NA students continue on to gain degrees in many other medical fields

CONCLUSIONS Overall, the Nursing Assistant I course is successful Absenteeism continues to be major issue Strategies to keep students engaged are needed What are your thoughts??

Nursing Assistant Program Press Team Members Pam Krakow, Program Director Nursing Assistant Program, Northgate Mall, ext Carolyn Beatty, Instructor Nursing Assistant Program, Part-time Faculty Jacequeline Mitchell, Program Coordinator Continuing Education, ext 4013 Cindy Hardin, Instructor, Practical Nursing Program, ext A Different Animal Nursing Assistant program is a continuing education class and follows regulations from both DTCC and Center for Aide Regulation and Education (CARE) at NC Department of Health Service Regulation. Differences include grading, scheduling, payment (no financial aid), and state requirements for making up all missed class work. Nursing Assistant course prepares the student to take the NC State Certification exam. Once certified the student is eligible for hire as a nursing assistant. Employers include hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, doctor s offices and clinics Course Description o Traditional (165 hours) over 15 weeks meets two days a week (class and lab) for 5 hour session. o Hybrid (165 hours) over 15 weeks meets one day a week in lab for 5 hours session (class / lecture material on-line). o Fast Track (165 hours) over 8 weeks meets four days a week for 5 hour session. o All classes include a 50 hour clinical component and meet daytime or evening. This program has 6 7 classes meeting at all times and maintains an average of 20 students per class. The NA program graduates approximately 300 students per year. PRESS Charge! Data from fall 2011 summer 2012 revealed an overall passing rate of 80% for participants who were enrolled yet the data revealed an interesting scenario. Most students were successful grade wise but were omitted from the program due to exceeding the attendance policy!

Nursing Assistant Program PRESS Action! Three Interventions Attendance Policy 1. Fall 2012: Changed the attendance policy in fall 2012 to add an additional allowed absence (total of 3). 2. Spring 2013: Implemented the college wide excused absence policy. Implemented a medical extension policy. Grades 3. Summer 2013: Revised passing grade from 78% to 75%. PRESS Results! Fall 2012 No change in number of students exceeding attendance policy. 14 students out of 84 exceeded the attendance policy. Spring 2013 Increase in number of students exceeding attendance policy. 29 students out of 108 exceeded the attendance policy. Go figure??? Summer % passed! No students had failing grades and only 8 students out of 68 exceeded the attendance policy. PRESS Plan! Stay the Course o o o Continue the strict attendance policy because it reflects work the environment. Keep the 75% average because the program currently has a high success rate on NC State NA Certification exam. Last results summer 2013: Written exam 95%, Skills exam 91% YEAH!! Too soon to see a trend! Additional Interesting Findings o o Fast Track course was most successful. Data from the last year indicated a higher success rate in the 8 week course versus the 16 week course. Some NA students go on to seek other health care education and degrees. REAP data revealed degrees received from: DTCC in A D N, PN, Clinical Trials, Medical Assisting, Surgical Tech, Pharm Tech, AA and AS degrees. BSN from NC Central University and East Carolina University BS in Anthropology, Biology, Psychology from UNC-CH, UNC-G, UNC-Charlotte Master of Health from University of Phoenix.
