3 PREFACE CONTRIBUTORS / MAGAZINE TEAM 01 FROM THE EDITOR PREFACE We have a cracking line up of conferences for you this year, with two new editions In March we have the trade conference for those working in the online recruitment industry followed by the Onrec awards now in its 7th year recognising and rewarding companies recruiters and suppliers embracing online recruitment. The May show is a first for Onrec in South America we will be running a conference combining international expertise with local knowledge for what will be a fascinating day. In June we launch another new show Gravity recruiting. This event will help companies learn, think about and develop strategies around the candidate finding their organisation through the web. October brings the Onrec UK conference and exhibition for corporates, recruiters and suppliers to get together and hear about latest thinking and best practice in the use of online recruitment. Followed by the Onrec US show our largest event. Last year we had over 500 attendees and 40 speakers. With delegates form 19 countries a truly international event. For me the chance to meet people in person and discuss the online recruitment an energising experience. I have attended many conference and events over the years and from my experience something positive comes out of every one. It might be a new contact, learning about a new technology or just the chance to get out of the office and as a result of a comment by a speaker find a solution to a puzzle that s been on your list for weeks.. 6 04 NEWS NEWS GUARDIAN JOBS ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP WITH TWITJOBSEARCH Guardian Jobs teams up with TwitJobSearch The partnership is set to build out integrated a Social Media Campaign TwitJobSearch (http://www.twitjobsearch. com), the first real-time job search engine, is excited to announce their partnership with leading UK jobs board Guardian Jobs (http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/). 7 NEWS 05 GRADCRACKER IPHONE APP MEET THE REAL ME HAS EXPANDED Best graduate candidates: now an easy find Meet The Real Me has expanded Gradcracker launches app V2 Gradcracker Launches iphone app V2 Gradcracker, the careers website for engineering and technology students, has announced the launch of version 2 of their iphone app. Released today, and available to download free from the iphone app store, the app has undergone a complete redesign and many new features have been added. Their ground-breaking iphone app was first launched in early 2010 and allowed engineering students to search for jobs and placements on the move. Now, engineering students can also watch employer videos, view photo galleries and read the popular Gradcracker Careers Guide. Technical improvements include retina display support for iphone 4 users, the addition of a registration process and the ability to syncronise personal preferences set on gradcracker.com with the app. Mark Beech, Senior Web Developer at Gradcracker said The first iphone app proved very popular with engineering students. Having the expertise in-house to build and develop the app has allowed us to continually add new ideas and features right up to the successful submission of V2 to Apple. The pioneering University Partnerships Service from video recruitment specialist Meet The Real Me has expanded, adding several new partner universities to its scheme. The online service, which provides employers with access to a wealth of students looking to get ahead in the employment race, has now been installed on campus at Britain s largest single-site university, The University of Manchester, and Canterbury Christ Church University. Manchester and Canterbury Christ Church join a number of other universities already using the service, such as the University of Wales, Newport, the European School of Economics and Hult International Business School. Hot on the heels of the partner universities, further education colleges Swindon and Stratford London are among the latest institutions to sign up for the scheme. The Partnership Service, launched in September, offers students an innovative and free platform to launch their job campaign before finishing their education. Webcam technology installed on campus, paired with Meet The Real Me s online service, provide students with a platform to showcase their individuality and charisma alongside traditional qualifications and a written CV. The Meet The Real Me service not only allows employers to meet candidates and assess them from the comfort of their own desk, but means hirers can connect with students from specific institutions or courses prior to graduation. Students are able to launch and manage their job campaign at MeetTheRealMe.com with a secure login, creating a V.I.P (Video Interview Profile). This combines a guided video CV with a detailed personal profile including qualifications, skills, experience, and an accompanying written CV. Subscribing employers can view and compare candidate profiles, post specific job roles on the site, and pose bespoke questions to identify the most desirable candidates early on in the process. Brian Michael, company director, says: In today s competitive market, entry-level jobs remain extremely soughtafter and competition for roles is at an all-time high. We look forward to working with existing partners and more education institutions in 2011 to provide students and employers with an original solution to the challenges of entry-level recruitment. 10 NEWS 07 TOTALJOBS ATTRACTS JOBSEEKERS Totaljobs.com attracts 3.75 million jobseekers in January Number of jobseekers rises by a third, compared to same period in million jobseekers visited totaljobs. com in January this year, a rise of 33% year-on-year, as a result of the job board s first national TV and radio advertising campaign in a decade. Those jobseekers visiting the website made two million applications in the first month of 2011; with 141,000 uploading or updating their CV, adding to the 2.8 million searchable profiles already housed on the site. John Salt, website director at totaljobs.com, says of the statistics: Undoubtedly the tough economic conditions mean there are many jobseekers but it is clear that totaljobs. com is attracting an ever greater proportion of the online audience. Our success in attracting more jobseekers and encouraging them to engage with the website in greater depth is thanks to a great marketing campaign which has put us front of mind, coupled with an improved user experience. The national advertising campaign, under the slogan it s not luck, it s totaljobs.com, has resulted in a strong increase in brand awareness, with a 90% increase in visits generated by people searching specifically for totaljobs in search engines or coming to the site direct. The increase in jobseeker engagement, demonstrated by the number of job applications and uploaded CVs, has been driven by investment in the online experience. To coincide with the marketing launch, totaljobs.com has improved its service for jobseekers. This partnership agreement between public and private sector employment services is hugely significant at what remains a difficult time for the UK jobs market. The principal aim of the MOU is to outline specific areas of cooperation in helping people into work in this challenging economic climate. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding by Kevin Green, the REC s Chief Executive and Darra Singh, Chief Executive of Jobcentre Plus will be followed by a roundtable discussion involving recruitment agencies and Jobcentre Plus representatives. 14 10 RECRUITMENT ICON GEOFF NEWMAN RECRUITMENT ICON GEOFF NEWMAN Geoff Newman is the MD of Recruitment Genius (Helping companies recruit staff for 199) onrec: What were you doing before Recruitment Genius? Geoff Newman: I was one of the few who developed a successful and profitable Internet start-up during the dotcom era. The model, which provided cost effective advertising solutions for selling and renting residential properties became tremendously successful and remained so even when the dotcom bubble burst. After selling this business I was looking for my next challenge and spent the next decade setting up recruitment agencies across a variety of sectors before seeing opportunities in online recruitment. Within five years we managed over seven hundred job boards worldwide before receiving an offer which was to good to refuse. onrec: How did Recruitment Genius start and how did you get the idea? Geoff Newman: I simply reflected on recruitment industry, thinking critically about its offering and creatively about what it could become. I m not nostalgic, but willing to break away from inherent dogma about the was business should operate. This period of reflection allowed me to see an exciting future which I wanted to be part of. I literally had an epiphany, left a meeting at 2pm and had our first sale by 4pm onrec: What does Recruitment Genius do? Geoff Newman: In simple terms, Recruitment Genius enables businesses to recruit the right people for 199. This is challenging the industry and since its launch has made a significant impact. We re already filled thousands of jobs across a variety of sectors and levels of seniority, such as a Finance Director for Tesco, IT staff for Sony Playstation, fashion designers for Hackett, and engineers for Shell - the list really does go on. This has led to some great publicity in leading titles such as the Financial Times and BBC and we re really proud to have won many business awards. onrec: Do you have plans to expand outside the UK? Geoff Newman: We re already helping companies in Australia, Ireland, America and Canada and looking forward to China. Indeed one of our clients who we recruited derivative traders for was so pleased with the cost savings they made with our service that they gave us some funding and advice to setup overseas to help them. I guess the business proposition of fast, cost-effective recruitment translates well across the world, so will Recruitment Genius. onrec: How many people do you employ? Geoff Newman: Surprisingly despite the high number of jobs we fill we only currently employ four staff and outsource a number of business elements which do not fall within our core skill. We achieve this by developing bespoke leading-edge technology. This enables us to remain slim whilst still offering our customers a real, and human, service. onrec: What do you think is on the horizon for 2011? Geoff Newman: I think the hard times are far from over. Businesses that survive will be those that can learn to operate in a more cost effective way and who innovate. Recruitment Genius is one of those companies and can help businesses radically change the way they recruit people whilst reducing their expenditure. onrec: How do you think the industry will recover from the recession? Geoff Newman: I think the only way any industry, or country, can recover from a recession is by focussing on remaining viable through the hard times whilst looking forwards to the better times. Businesses, without a doubt, need to baton down the hatches whilst not forgetting how to be creative and innovative and remembering to look forwards. With regards the recruitment industry specifically it has barely changed over the past 30 years. Even now it remains entrenched in irrelevant business models and isn t particularly relevant or inspirational. However, Recruitment Genius has proven there are ways to disrupt and positively change an industry. What the economy and society can learn from us is that change is inevitable, simply embrace it. onrec: Where do you envision Recruitment Genius in 5 years? Geoff Newman: I think Recruitment Genius has made a significant impact in the industry, but there is far more to come. We are continuing to explore international expansion and have some really exciting developments into social media. I believe, in five years, or less, Recruitment Genius model will be the way in which businesses recruit. There will be no more room in the market for costly fees and lengthy processes instead businesses will recognise the value in recruiting people the Genius way. onrec: If you were not working in recruitment today, what would you do? Geoff Newman: I can honestly say I absolutely love what I do, but if I had to start again (and I had the money) I d want to be an angel investor in new-tech start-ups and help develop a silicon-valley equivalent in London. The UK has so many talented individuals that just need an opportunity and resources - its terrible no one has seized the initiative on this. onrec: Do you have other business interests? Geoff Newman: I am currently focussing all of my efforts on ensuring Recruitment Genius gets it right because I know we can achieve so much and don t want any distractions. Besides I ve got quite a busy family and social life and don t think I could find enough time in the day. onrec: What has been your biggest achievement? Geoff Newman: My biggest achievement and the one that keeps me focussed is my family. For me the only point of working so hard to run a successful business is how ONREC MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 201

My wife and my boys are, without doubt, my biggest achievement. onrec: If you could turn back the clocks, what would you change? Geoff Newman: In the past I haven t worried too much about scalability or processes. But Recruitment Genius has grown so quickly we we re initially firefighting and wasting money on interim measures. If I had the foresight I would have tried to slow down our growth so that we had got it right first time. But that s a mistake I won t repeat and now we have strong cash flow I don t need to worry about short-term affordability and so can focus on long-term value. onrec: Which business leader or other general public figure do you admire most today? Geoff Newman: Sir Gerry Robinson is someone I greatly respect. He s successfully transformed businesses of all sizes, doesn t try to impress people with business jargon and rhetoric and remains focused on the things that matter. I also admire Kevin Rose, an influential angel investor and serial entrepreneur from America who has a great work life balance. 16 12 APPLICANT TRACKING SYSTEMS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW APPLICANT TRACKING SYSTEMS ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW AND DIDN'T DARE ASK By Lauren Mackelden, UK Features Editor, onrec Magazine The thought of choosing a new Applicant Tracking System (ATS) may fill you with trepidation, but never fear, Onrec is here to help guide you through the maze. An ATS is quite simply a software application for tracking candidates, jobs and job applications through the various process stages associated with recruitment, states James Harrison, EMEA Sales Manager at icims. Applicant Tracking Systems have been existence for over 20 years and were originally developed from CRM (Client Relationship Management) solutions, many current-day ATS still holding CRM functionality at their core. Many of the earliest systems were developed by recruitment consulting firms to improve their own efficiency, before being made into saleable products. In order to satisfy the additional needs of corporate recruiting (vacancy approvals, etc), some of these systems evolved, while others specialised in meeting the needs of recruitment ONREC MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2011

17 APPLICANT TRACKING SYSTEMS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW 13 greater flexibility and configuration options, greater cost effectiveness and easier to support and maintain and develop. Good applicant tracking systems are constantly being developed and the recent boom in social networking has offered a host of new features for posting jobs, attracting job seekers, proactively finding candidates and reviewing applicants in greater detail, utilising networks such as Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter etc. Many ATS are now (either via development or acquisition) offering broader Talent Management Solutions (TMS), including performance, succession planning, learning and development etc. What difference will an ATS make? As well as making it easy for candidates to apply to your vacancies, an ATS will give your business a number of key benefits, says Umang Panchal, Business Development Director at Gtisolutions. Panchal declares: agencies. The internet was the main driver behind the creation of these types of solutions, the benefits of having candidates complete applications online, rather than manually completing forms or sending in their CVs, being a huge time saver for recruitment teams. It s worth noting that enabling applicants to submit a CV via a corporate website is NOT the same thing as having an ATS. In fact it may be worse from the candidate s viewpoint, because it gives the impression that there s some system in place that will help to ensure their application will be at least efficiently processed if the system behind the website is nothing more than an folder, they re in for a big disappointment. The most common functions associated with Applicant Tracking Systems Include: Job Creation, Management and Posting Candidate Search and Apply Candidate Communications Candidate Screening and Ranking Recruitment Process Management (Workflows and Recruitment Stages) Candidate Talent Pools Searching Metrics and Reporting More recent advances in internet technology have allowed ATS providers to offer more powerful solutions with 1. An ATS should save you time and money by freeing up resource previously spent on manually logging and processing candidates. One of our clients in the leisure sector was able to reduce their resource by 50% by moving from receiving CV s via An ATS will be able to improve the quality and control of your recruitment process. This will be achieved by being able to monitor targets of applications at each stage, identify any issue areas/roles early and keep the time to hire period as tight as possible. 3. An ATS with good reporting functionality will be able to help you measure the effectiveness of marketing and even identify which recruitment agencies are showing value for money. A good reporting engine will also allow you to quickly pull-off reports to show things like diversity statistics, applications at each stage of the process and the source of the application. There are plenty of other positives. As Ralph Brasker, Head of Product Marketing at Stepstone Solutions points out, many candidates abandon the application process midway because it s too painful, and warns that with tools like Twitter and Facebook, they usually tell their friends about it. That can cause a lot of damage to an employer brand comments Brasker. A good system will prevent that, and Brasker advises that it can also help you to be compliant with local regulations, be supportive of diversity, and will allow you to analyse and report on your hiring KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). 18 14 APPLICANT TRACKING SYSTEMS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW Demystifying the jargon Peter Linas, UK MD of Bullhorn explains common acronyms: "Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) have also been called Talent Management Systems (TMS) and obviously CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management. You may also have heard of RMS - Recruitment Management System. Ralph Brasker, Head of Product Marketing from Stepstone Solutions interprets useful terms: Multi-posting automatically posting job ads to multiple internal and external jobsites and portals with a single click. CV parsing Using software to extract candidate data from CVs to prepopulate application forms Assessment /filtering/screening/ matching Various techniques for ranking applications by skills or relevance to reduce the volume to manageable levels Onboarding the process of making an offer, negotiating a contract and bringing a new starter successfully into a business with everything in place. scheduling, suggests Tim Richards, Managing Director of Bond International Software (UK). Richards says most good providers will also offer the option of bespoke features for a more personalised system that better suits the organisations requirements. The business case for companies incorporating ATS into their recruitment strategies is a strong one, believes Richards. Return on investment for companies can be significant, with benefits including higher volumes of applications, enhanced process visibility, improved candidate experience, lower recruitment costs and a more easily managed, efficient recruitment operation in some cases, the implementation of a new ATS has paid for itself within weeks. Peter Linas, the UK Managing Director of Bullhorn believes the most important thing to consider when choosing an ATS is how future-proofed it is. Obviously it needs to fulfil your current requirements but it should also be able to grow with your business. The worst thing a business can do is to get tied down with a technology that is resistant to change. Some ATSs are available as Software-asa-Service (SaaS) packages. Linas says these consist of a multi-tenant webbased platform that is easily managed, automatically updated by the provider and highly secure and affordable. He recommends choosing SaaS allows for organic growth and platform flexibility that standard hosted providers or softwarein-a-box suppliers just can't rival. Plus, it puts your business in a position to focus on making placements and take advantage of next generation technology long before the competition. With businesses still cautious about the state of the economy, the top consideration for many employers looking to implement an applicant tracking system is likely to be cost, acknowledges Chris Phillips, vice president of international marketing for Taleo. However, Phillips cautions that while value for money is an important deliberation, gaining value from your investment does not always directly correlate with choosing products at the cheapest price. In general, a truly effective ATS should offer valuable talent management functionality while serving to build your business with a superior talent bank well into the future. Basing your evaluation from a strategic as well as tactical standpoint will provide you with both value for money and return on investment in the long term. ONREC MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2011
