2 Background 1946: Fulbright Program established in the US under legislation sponsored by Senator J. William Fulbright to increase mutual respect and understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges. 1957: Fulbright Program established in Ireland, more commonly known as An Bord Scholáireacthaí Cómhalairte (The Scholarship Exchange Board). 1991: Ireland United States (Fulbright) Commission for Educational Exchange established by Irish legislation as a public body with charitable supported by the US Department of State and the Department of Foreign Affairs to operate the Fulbright Program.

3 What is on offer? Awards Fulbright grants include a monetary award, J-1 visa administration, accident and emergency insurance, and cultural and professional programs. There are awards for: 1. Irish citizens & EU citizens in Ireland for three years or more for postgraduate research, study, and or lecturing in the US 2. US citizens for postgraduate research, study, and or lecturing in Ireland.

5 Two Categories of Awards Fulbright All Discipline Scholar Awards Fulbright All Discipline Student Awards Two Types of Awards COMMISSION AWARDS in any discipline including the visual and performing arts SPONSORED AWARDS for specific areas / applicants.

6 Fulbright Awards - Scholars and Professionals Number: Approximately 6 Value: $20,000 (maximum) This program enables Irish academics / post-doctoral scholars professionals to spend 3-12 months researching / lecturing in the US. The following awards are offered for : Fulbright Awards in any discipline including the visual and performing arts Fulbright Irish Language Scholar Award for research / lecturing the Irish language Competition deadline 15:00 on Wednesday 14 th November 2012.

7 Fulbright All Discipline Student Awards Number: Approx 14 Value: $20,000 (maximum) These awards enable Irish students to undertake postgraduate study and research at US colleges. Students can be: enrolled on Irish / EU PhD programs OR may apply / enrol on US degree programs.

8 NOTE: The grant is only available for one year but students may remain in the US for the full duration of their US Masters and PhD programs. Two-Year Home Rule: You must return home for a minimum of two years before seeking employment in the US.

10 Fulbright Awards Timeline 14 th November 2012: submit on-line application / references / CV, 4 hard copies and supplemental documentation November - December 2012: application review / short-listing by Commission / interview panels January February 2013: if short-listed, interview in Dublin February 2013: consideration by Fulbright Commission in Dublin March- April 2013: offers made by Commission and US institutions June Aug 2013: final approvals, awards ceremony, orientation program and visa administration / interview

11 Fulbright - EPA Award in Water, Climate Change, or Sustainable Environment Maximum of 20K depending on length of time (3-12 months) Who can apply? Degree Seeking Students undergraduate degree by September 2013 and intend to register for a Masters/PhD PhD Students doing a PhD in Ireland and wish to carry out research in the US for a period of 6-12 months Post Doctorates currently engaged in research in Ireland and wish to carry out specific work in the US for a period of 3-12 months. NOTE: Applicants must have been conferred with a PhD within the past two years i.e. if applying for you would have been conferred no earlier than November 2011.

12 Fulbright Enterprise Ireland Award: 10K Who can apply? Degree Seeking Students students who will have completed an undergraduate degree by September 2013 and intend to register for a Masters or PhD in the US. PhD Students who are already doing a PhD in Ireland and wish to carry out research in the US for a period of 6-12 months as part of their doctoral study.

13 Fulbright Marine Institute Award in Marine Research or postgraduate study: 20K Applications are sought in any marine science/business related topic The following topics are particularly encouraged: Marine Sensor Technologies and Observation Systems, Maritime Economics, Ocean Energy, Marine Biotechnology (incl. Functional Foods), Oceanography & Marine Modelling, Food Safety and Ecosystem-based Management. Who can apply? PhD Students who are already doing a PhD in Ireland and wish to carry out research in the US for a period of 6-12 months as part of their doctoral study. Post Doctorates who are currently engaged in research in Ireland and wish to carry out specific work in the US for a period of 3-12 months. PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must have been conferred with a PhD within the past three years, i.e. if applying for you would have been conferred no earlier than November Apply as a scholar.

14 Fulbright Teagasc Award in Agriculture, Food, & Forestry: 20K Opportunity for Irish postgraduate students to travel to the US and study or research in the fields of agriculture, food and forestry. Who can apply? Degree Seeking Students students who will have completed an undergraduate degree by September 2013 and intend to register for a Masters or PhD in the US. PhD Students who are already doing a PhD in Ireland and wish to carry out research in the US for a period of 6-12 months as part of their doctoral study.

15 Fulbright Notre Dame Award in International Human Rights Law What s on Offer 50% tuition waiver from the University of Notre Dame (full value of tuition / fees are estimated at $45,000 for ) on its LL.M. in International Human Rights Law A Fulbright award (value $16,000 - $20,000 + visa administration, programming and accident and emergency insurance) towards living expenses and the remainder of the fees and tuition. Eligibilty Students who will have completed an undergraduate degree in law by August 2013 and intend to register for an LL.M. in the US. 17 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship (FLTA) Number: Approximately 8 Value: Approximately $20,000 including return airfares, living costs, and tuition waivers The aim of the FLTA program is: to strengthen Irish language instruction at US colleges and universities to provide current or future teachers with the opportunity to refine their teaching skills to extend their knowledge of US society and culture

18 Fulbright Irish Language Scholar Award - 35K Award in the Irish Language to support scholar/professional to lecture or lecture / research 3-9 months Who can apply? Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant Irish language discipline and substantial Irish language teaching experience. Alternatively, the candidate may be an outstanding independent scholar or an authority in the Irish language.
