2 Welcome to Elevations Magazine. CVHP is dedicated and guided by our mission: to help people keep well in body, mind and spirit by providing quality health care services in a safe, compassionate environment. Our mission remains strong and our commitment to our community even stronger. We exist to take care of you, whether within one of our hospitals, at home through our home health or hospice services or through our many programs that aim to keep you healthy. We have developed programs to help manage disease before hospital services are ever needed. Taking care of our community begins with providing access to education, prevention, health screenings and clinics to help manage chronic diseases, such as diabetes. In addition to being your hospitals of choice, we want to be your resource for health and wellness needs. Throughout this issue you will learn more about the special programs and the many events planned. Maintaining your good health and the health of your family, friends and neighbors is our mission. I hope you enjoy this edition of Elevations and invite you to visit to learn more. In good health, Robert H. Curry President & CEO Citrus Valley Health Partners 2 elevations e l e v a t i o n sini nhealth h e a l t h fall/winter f a l l Rewarding YOU for staying healthy If you re like most active adults, staying healthy is a top priority. In fact, taking care of your health is the most important thing you can do. Citrus Valley Independent Physicians wants to make it simple for you to stay healthy. That s why the group created Senior Select Wellness, a membership program for those 65 and older. Senior Select Wellness rewards members for taking simple steps to maintain and improve their health. Through your Passport to Wellness, you can stay on top of when to see your doctor for important screenings and prevention visits. In between visits, you can attend free classes and events that also earn you points and aim to keep you healthy. Members are invited to monthly health screenings and our annual flu clinics. They also receive discounts in the cafeterias and gift shops at Queen of the Valley Hospital, Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and Inter-Community Hospital. And just for joining, Senior Select Wellness members will receive a free first aid kit! Passport to Wellness Rewards How do you earn points? It s easy! For every wellness visit you keep with your physician, you earn five points. These are visits you may be making already, such as your Annual Wellness Exam, a mammogram or prostate cancer screening, and vaccinations for flu or pneumonia. After each visit, your physician will stamp your passport and you have peace of mind knowing that you ve done something to stay healthy and you ve earned points for doing it! What can you buy with all the points you earn? Everyday useful items you can use around the house, the latest electronic devices, gift cards and more. Members also receive a 10% discount in the cafeterias and gift shops at Queen of the Valley Hospital, Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and Inter-Community Hospital by showing their Passport to Wellness. All this for simply taking care of your health? Yes. It s rewarding to select wellness! If you are interested in learning more about Senior Select Wellness, please call (626) or go online at Want to find the right Medicare plan for you? 5 Citrus Valley Health Partners Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery Open surgery, also known as laparotomy, refers to any surgical procedure in which a large cut or incision is made to reach your organs. The incision must be sizeable enough for your surgeon to fit his or her hands and surgical instruments inside your body. With gynecological surgery, the incision can be horizontal or vertical. The horizontal incision is usually about an inch above the pubic bone. This type of cut is also called a bikini incision, and is the most common type of incision to perform during a Caesarean section (or C-section). Open surgery is used successfully worldwide for many gynecologic conditions. There are, however, some drawbacks for patients, due to the large abdominal incision and resulting scarring. Fortunately, there are minimally invasive surgical options for women facing complex gynecologic conditions. Minimally Invasive Surgery Experienced Surgeons Performing Hysterectomies, Cervical Biopsies & More At Citrus Valley Health Partners, we specialize in gynecological surgery, and are able to perform the following types of traditional procedures at all of our surgery centers: Minimally invasive hysterectomy. Our advanced laparoscopic hysterectomy procedures eliminate a long recovery time, allowing a busy woman to get back to her life as soon as possible. Using only a few miniscule incisions, our surgeons are able to remove your uterus without a painful rehabilitation period. Heavy menstrual bleeding relief. Prolonged periods can drastically influence your quality of life, from daily activities to clothing choices. We offer procedures that treat the lining of your uterus, drastically cutting down on monthly menstrual bleeding. Urinary incontinence treatment. Our skilled surgeons can adjust the urethra and your pelvic floor muscle to treat urinary incontinence and return you to your regular lifestyle. Permanent birth control. Are you happy with your family size? Using inserts and minimally invasive tiny incisions to place a small device in your fallopian tubes, our doctors can prevent eggs from reaching your uterus, thus providing a permanent form of birth control. Cervical biopsy. By minimally invasive means, our doctors remove tissue from your cervix to test for abnormal or precancerous conditions, proactively ensuring your health and well-being. For more information about the procedures we can perform to treat a variety of gynecological conditions, please visit Presented by Dr. Edward Tangchitnob Tuesday, October 20, 6 7:30 PM Queen of the Valley Hospital Oakwood Room, Free Know Your Stats Presented by Dr. John Lee Thursday, September 17, :30 PM Queen of the Valley Hospital Oakwood Room, Free 8 elevations in health fall 2015 fall 2015 elevations in health 9

Saturday, October 17, a.m. to 1 p.m. Queen of the Valley Hospital, Front Lawn, 1115 S. Sunset Ave., West Covina, CA CVHP Introduces a Valve Clinic for Severe Aortic Stenosis Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis is often caused by the build-up of calcium (mineral deposits) on the aortic valve s leaflets (flaps of tissue that open and close to regulate the one-way flow of blood through the aortic valve) in elderly patients. This build-up of calcium on the leaflets impairs the aortic valve s ability to fully open and close. As a result, the narrowed valve allows less oxygen-rich blood to flow from the lungs to the brain and rest of the body, which may cause symptoms like severe shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. What can help with severe aortic stenosis is to either replace the valve with tissue or do a procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). Citrus Valley Health Partners (CVHP) has opened up a valve clinic run by a multidisciplinary team led by expert cardiologists and surgeons who specialize in heart valve disease to consider both of these options.
