Sex, Alcohol, & Academics: Elements to address in treatment plans for college student s presenting problems from a multicultural/developmental perspective Sherritta Hughes, MS, LPC The Chicago School of Professional Psychology ACCA
Welcome! 2
Objectives 1.Discuss what the issues are 2. Collaboratively Design a plan to approach and address the issues 3. Evaluate the treatment plans 3
The issues from a multicultural/developmental lens Sex Alcohol Academics 4
Research Implications Interpretation of problem Gain clarity Worldview Action plans Content Analysis 4 Agreed upon strategies of Tx planning Ask Allow Be comfortable It may not be in the text, but in your experience 5
Design Plan (from literature implications) Laura: A case vignette 6
Laura identifies as a White female who is on the softball team. She explains being referred to mental health counseling by her softball coach. She also shared that several close friends suggested she seek professional help because of excessive drinking that leads to intoxication. She stated that her drinking also leads to sexual encounters with friends she has felt attracted to. There s more. 7
Open Discussion What were your initial thoughts about Laura regarding how she presented her reason for seeking mental health counseling? Would you allow Laura to form her Tx plan or would you suggest the content of the plan (i.e. problem, goals, objectives)? What multicultural factors did you consider or did not consider when creating the Tx plan for Laura? What developmental factors did you consider or did not consider when creating the Tx plan for Laura? 8
Final Thoughts We don t have all day Its helpful when we are intentional There is a discussion deserving of our attention 9
