4 Who we are
Making healthcare healthier DNV Healthcare DNV Healthcare is part of Det Norske Veritas, an independent foundation whose purpose is to safeguard life, property and the environment. We have over 140 years of experience in developing standards and building safety cultures in safety critical industries. Today, we live in a world full of challenges, with a new risk reality confronting every industry, including healthcare. Our team of healthcare and risk management specialists has an innovative, advanced approach to help healthcare providers globally in identifying, assessing and managing risk, enhancing patient safety and quality, while ensuring sustainable services and improved performance. There are a wide range of challenges in providing consistent safety and quality of care across all healthcare delivery settings, especially at a time of constrained or reduced resources. Organisations are dealing with the impact of complex technological and clinical advances, patients affected by preventable accidents, hospital acquired infections, ageing populations facing chronic diseases, and the shift towards community based care. The need for sharing best practices has never been greater. Drawing on our team s direct experience of working in healthcare settings, our standards and assessments examine governance and quality systems, the management of infection, clinical and non-clinical risks, medical equipment and the quality of healthcare environments. We use a management systems approach to help you build an organisation that constantly improves the way it works, and assures patients and stakeholders of a commitment to improving safety and quality, whilst safeguarding your reputation..
Raising the bar
Setting out how it should be, all the time, every time Standards development and research We want every patient and service user across the globe to get the best care possible, no matter where they live or who they are. We want to facilitate the sharing of good practice and innovation. We want to tap into the knowledge and experience of experts, practitioners and patients. We want to set standards that improve patient outcomes and experience, as well as business performance. We are committed to the continuous development of our people and to undertaking research that drives innovation. Based in Norway, our Healthcare Research Programme comprises a multinational and multidisciplinary team that draws from DNV s wider experience of managing risks in high risk sectors and adapts methodologies and approaches for use in the healthcare environment. This has included the development of our Managing Infection Risk Standard, and learning lessons from clinical negligence claims in the UK. Our publication, Technology Outlook 2020 Healthcare, explores which technologies will be impacting on healthcare by 2020 and how hospitals can begin planning for the future. Throughout DNV s long history of developing standards and conducting assessments to measure compliance, we have built up a practical insight into what makes a set of standards meaningful and effective. We can help local, regional or national stakeholders write healthcare standards adapted to specific requirements, involve public and professional representation, and develop and implement the assessment process. We bring together and share good practice between countries, different types of healthcare organisations and across industry sectors.
Standards and assessment DNV International Accreditation Standards Based on the DNV standards developed and used in the United States of America, these standards are adapted for international application, taking into account local legislative requirements and cultural needs. The standards look at clinical and patient safety requirements combined with ISO 9001 quality principles and an emphasis on proactive risk management. The management systems approach supports a clear focus on improved performance, enhanced effectiveness and efficiency. DNV Accreditation Standards US (NIAHO) These standards, created in 2008 for hospitals in the United States of America, are recognised by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to satisfy registration and reimbursement requirements for hospitals, and integrate the ISO 9001 quality management approach. In addition, DNV offers disease-specific certifications such as Primary Stroke Center Certification to adapt the process to different types of healthcare organisation. DNV Managing Infection Risk Standard Our Managing Infection Risk (MIR) standard has been developed to provide a comprehensive framework to help healthcare organisations improve their management of infection risk, one of the most important and challenging areas for patient safety. The standard provides a structured approach to infection control, building on the framework of international standards, together with best practice from biorisk and other major hazard industries.
NHS Litigation Authority Standards DNV is responsible for the development and assessment of the risk management standards that apply to all NHS organisations in England. The standards aim to reduce the number of negligent or preventable incidents, support the improvement of quality patient care and encourage organisations to take a proactive approach to risk management. Macmillan Quality Environment Mark The Macmillan Quality Environment Mark (MQEM) aims to set the highest possible standards for cancer care environments, driving forward the design and use of these facilities, based on a robust understanding of the needs of people affected by cancer. Developed by Macmillan Cancer Support, and assessed by DNV, it is the first ever standard looking at whether facilities support the comfort, well-being, dignity and choice of those affected by cancer. Community Healthcare Equipment DNV is working to accredit organisations providing healthcare equipment in the community to children, disabled and older people. The Community Equipment Code of Practice Scheme (CECOPS) sets best practice standards for making sure that equipment is provided as efficiently as possible to those people who need it in order to improve both health and financial outcomes. ISO Certification ISO standards are internationally recognised standards that apply across industry sectors and for all sizes of organisation. We have identified those with particular application to the healthcare sector and provide tailored assessments and training in management systems designed to address quality, the environment, business continuity and risk management.
Checking you re on track
Demonstrate your expertise and provide assurance to stakeholders Assessment and certification The implementation of a standard is a tool for improvement and better performance, and this process needs to be evaluated to make sure it s happening correctly and effectively. Choosing DNV ensures an objective third party validation and benchmarking of your processes and systems, while also identifying areas to be targeted for improvement and opportunities for greater efficiency and ongoing sustainability. Assessment of an organisation s compliance against a set of standards is DNV s area of expertise. With 300 offices in over 100 countries, we are uniquely positioned to serve the needs of the global healthcare community, having assessed over 1300 healthcare organisations internationally. DNV assesses all public healthcare organisations in England on behalf of the NHS Litigation Authority and assesses the Macmillan Quality Environment Mark for cancer care environments in the UK. We are recognised by CMS in the US to accredit hospitals, and we are partners with the China National Health Research & Development Centre to address risk management in China s healthcare reform programme. Our safety expertise and healthcare knowledge is combined with a supportive approach as well as an in depth understanding of the challenges faced by the healthcare sector. DNV s annual surveys help an organisation to achieve a state of constant readiness and embed cultural changes. We help the organisations we work with to understand the principles of the standards they are implementing, and how they can create a positive impact on patient safety and quality as well as business performance.
Impact for change
Find out if investment and change have made a difference Service evaluation Investment and development are a crucial part of the continuous improvement of our healthcare systems. From building new facilities to restructuring service delivery, collaborative projects with other organisations to implementing new policies, making sure that this investment achieves the changes intended can be difficult. By undertaking a thorough and systematic evaluation, lessons can be learned as to what works successfully and what can be done better in the future. Our management systems approach provides us with a platform to evaluate whether a project, programme, service or policy is meeting its intended objectives. Using a structured methodology incorporating inputs, outputs, outcomes and impacts, our process is adapted to reflect the scale and context of each evaluation. From the design of a building through to evaluating the views of the people who use and work in them, we help organisations maximise the impact of the healthcare environment and the structure of service delivery to improve the wellbeing and experiences of both patients and staff. Our involvement of patients and staff in providing feedback means their views are actively used to make improvements and acknowledges the importance of their input in measuring success. Evaluation provides an opportunity to adapt and respond to changing priorities for patients, staff and the organisation. By providing evidence to inform strategic decision making and optimise the use of resources, evaluation enables a positive impact for the improvement of operational management. Through systematically considering the impact of change on patients and staff, we support organisations in delivering targeted and effective patient-centred care..
Guiding your learning
Helping your organisation to create change and improvement Training and support Knowledge fosters an organisation s ability to change. Our training supports your organisation s preparation and progress against the standards that we have developed or assess, including ISO 9001, DNV Accreditation and DNV Managing Infection Risk. You will be better equipped to implement your management system, undertake internal audits and share knowledge with other people in your organisation. Our training provides practical knowledge to use in preparing for assessment and to gain assurance that safety and quality objectives are being achieved. Courses range from one day foundation courses to help you understand the fundamentals of a standard and its application in practice, to two day internal surveyor courses that cover the required skills to plan and conduct an audit, and up to three to five day lead surveyor courses for participants who want to develop the knowledge and skills to carry out audits of complete management systems. Our focus on interactive training using practical case studies creates a meaningful learning experience to help participants retain knowledge and understand how it will apply to their organisation Training is run periodically through public courses, providing the opportunity to network with others, or can be arranged as a private course run in-house within your organisation, enabling you to build up a team with the skills to embed standards and implement systematic change..
