1 Health Services Blueprint Project: Analysis of Health Service Provider Survey #1 February, 2011

2 Overview The following presentation provides a summary of the responses to the first North West LHIN Blueprint Project Survey. The analysis of these responses was used in the development of Survey #2. 2

3 Overview The following analysis is based on 211 fully completed surveys collected from the first North West LHIN Blueprint Project Survey. The majority of the responses came from service providers in the City of Thunder Bay, followed by Kenora District. The smallest number of responses came from Rainy River District. Some providers chose more than one district, indicating that their roles span several sub-lhin areas. In what sub-lhin area do you work? 16.11% 3.79% 11.85% 24.64% 43.60% City of Thunder Bay Kenora District Thunder Bay District (excluding the city of Thunder Bay) Rainy River District 3

4 Overview of Survey Respondents What type of healthcare professional are you? Allied Health Professional Social Worker Administration community Administration hospital Registered Nurse Community Service Provider Nurse practitioner Family practice physician Specialist physician Government Registered Practical Nurse Psychiatrist Psychologist 0% 10% 20% 30% Percentage of Respondents A wide variety of providers responded to the survey, including: Allied Health Professionals Social Workers Administrators One quarter (25%) of respondents indicated that they fell into the other category. Respondents in this category most often indicated that they were Allied Health Professionals, Administration, Case Managers and Educators. There were also several respondents who identified that they had more than one role. In the second survey of health services providers, the demographic identifiers have been changed to more accurately capture the range of service providers in the North West LHIN. 4

Telemedicine Northern Ontario School of Medicine Existing and potential partnerships Innovation (new or inventive ways of Strong community support Strong existing networks (eg: north network) Established linkages with Aboriginal Lakehead University Centre for Education Centres of excellence (eg: CEISS)* Health Human Resources Lakehead University and the Centre for Mainstream activities Provision of Francophone Health Services Each survey respondent was asked to identify 4 strengths. Aggregate analysis of survey responses identified the following as the top four strengths within the North West LHIN: 1. Telemedicine 2. Northern Ontario School of Medicine 3. Access to primary care Aging population High risk health behaviours (eg: Prevalence of chronic diseases Access to Specialist care Health Status of the Population Transportation Lack of Health Human Resources Low Socioeconomic Status Decreasing population / Unemployment Level of health technology Each survey respondent was asked to identify 4 challenges. The majority of respondents identified the following as the top four challenges within the North West LHIN : 1. Access to Primary Care 2. Aging Population 3. High Risk Health Behaviours 4. Prevalence of Chronic disease 0% 4% 8% 12% 16% Percentage of Responses 8

9 Barriers to the delivery of healthcare in the North West LHIN Each survey respondent was asked to What are the most critical barriers that negatively affect healthcare delivery in the North West LHIN? Lack of primary care physicians or alternatives (e.g. Nurse Practitioner led clinics) Funding models (how dollars are allocated and used) Inefficient system navigation processes Geography distance to service Lack of information sharing across providers Inefficient referral processes identify 4 barriers. The majority of respondents identified the following as the top 4 critical barriers that negatively impact healthcare delivery in the North West LHIN: 1. Lack of Primary Care Physicians or Alternatives 2. Funding Models Lack of knowledge of available healthcare services Duplication of services Poor care management Lack of ehealth technology Services not provided in a culturally sensitive manner Services not available in language of choice 3.
