5 Prominent History of Cincinnati s Jewish Community American Judaism has its roots in Cincinnati; the Reform movement was born with Hebrew Union College. Business Summit October 12 th 15 th Cincinnati is home to: The first Jewish Federation in continual existence. The first English language Jewish newspaper. The first Jewish Hospital. Cincinnati s Jewish Community Today There are about 27,000 Jews in the Greater Cincinnati area. 33% of Cincinnati Jewish respondents report that they are very connected to Israel, compared to 28% nationally. Israel s 60th birthday celebration on Cincinnati s Fountain Square, featuring Idan Raichel, attracted more than 5,000 people from the Jewish and general community. Inclusive & Affordable For Israelis Although surprising to many Israelis, Cincinnati has more Fortune 500 headquarters per capita than New York, Chicago, Boston or Los Angeles, which brings many international and sophisticated business leaders. Israelis hold senior positions at Procter & Gamble, Inc. (P&G), Cincinnati Children s Medical Center, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the University of Cincinnati and on local television news. Israeli families living here choose among excellent, free public schools and two Jewish Day Schools, one that is Orthodox and the other is pluralistic and highlights spoken modern Hebrew and contemporary Israeli culture. Many Israelis choose to participate as part of our local Jewish community, which is one of the best funded in America, due largely to the Jewish Foundation, a nearly $400 million asset which, along with the Jewish Federation, invests $18 million a year in the Cincinnati Jewish community. These extraordinary financial resources make participation in Jewish community activities affordable and offer tuition grants for overnight camps, Israel trips and Jewish Day Schools. These funds also support a state of the art Jewish Community Center that provides premiere early childhood education, preschool, day camp and a two-story fitness center. As a result, like the city itself, Cincinnati s Jewish community is inclusive, innovative and provides its members with opportunities that are unmatched in any other city in the United States. Israel-Cincinnati Partnerships Cincinnati was one of the first communities to bring a Community Shaliach to serve as a cultural ambassador. Cincinnati Children s is partnering with leading Israeli hospitals and universities to improve child health worldwide through research and technology collaborations, joint patient care, and training opportunities for Israeli physicians and scientists. P&G s Israel House of Innovation is recognized as one of the leading hubs on the company s global network. In 2011, P&G joined forces with the Israeli company Teva, a leading manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals.
