2 2013 Winter Meeting Program Agenda Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Our Mission Statement: The Massachusetts Association of Criminal D efense Lawyers is the pre-eminent statewide assoc1at1on of lawyers in Massachusetts devoted exclusively to serving all segments of the defense bar. According to our mission statement, MACDL's mission is to preserve the adversary system of justice, to maintain and foster independent and able criminal defense lawyers, and to ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime. 3 The Clarence Gideon Award- Roger Witkin Roger has been a leading member of the Massachusetts criminal defense bar since 1963 and tried hundreds of cases, including representing one of the defendants in the Charlestown 99 Restaurant murders. Roger is also the co-author of the Criminal Defense Motions volume of the Mass. Practice Series and a key former member of MACDL's board of directors. Judicial Excellence Award and Keynote Speaker - Hon. Nancy Gertner Nancy Gertner is a charter member of our organization, having had a distinguished career as a Massachusetts criminal defense attorney before she was appointed to the Federal bench in 1994 by President Clinton. She served as a federal district court judge until She has received many awards for her dedicat1on to civil rights, women's issues, and justice, including the Thurgood Marshall A ward from the American Bar Association, becoming only the second woman to receive it (Justice Ginsburg was the first). Gertner has also written and spoken widely on various legal issues and has appeared as a keynote speaker, panelist or lecturer concerning civil rights, civil liberties, employment, criminal just1ce and procedural issues, throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.
