What one may not know is that 19.6% of the price represents a tax (Value Added Tax). This tax is refundable to tourists and foreign residents who will leave CEE within six months period, taking the purchased items with them. When making purchases in Paris, you should ask the salesperson for a Bordereau de Vente a l'exportation or state that you are a visitor and would like to claim the Prix d'export. The salesperson may ask for your passport as proof that you are not a resident of EU. The 19.6% of tax in the price is the amount that will be refunded to you. TAX REFUND RECEIPT When you depart the EU, present your tax slips to the Customs Officials at the airport for a validating stamp. You can receive your refund in cash from a bank in the airport, as a rebate to your credit card, or it will be mailed to an address that you supply. A minimum purchase of 175 euro is required before eligibility for a tax refund is acquired. The tax slips are valid for 3 months. The T.V.A. Customs Office is located in the departure area of the airport. The procedure of having your tax slips validated can be time consuming so please allocate an additional half hour to your check-in time. It is mandatory to present goods to Customs Authorities to get the refund. 16

17 TRANSPORTATION TAXIS Taxis are usually plentiful, with the exception of rush hour or late at night. Your hotel doorman can get a taxi for you. There are numerous taxi stands in the city, look for the Tête de Station sign. You should always take the first taxi in line. The tariff is registered on the meter, which increases between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM. Tipping the driver is not necessary, though if you feel it would be appropriate 10% of amount registered on the meter is recommended. Private luxury cars are available as well, yet for a much higher fee. The easiest and surest way of obtaining a taxi is to book ahead through your hotel. METRO The Paris subway has 14 city lines and 5 suburban lines (RER). At each station entrance there is a map of the system, each line has a number and is labeled with the names of the two terminal points. Tickets are sold at the station entrance. Tickets can be bought individually or in a book of 10 (carnet) which is more economical and practical. These tickets can also be used on the city buses as well. Daily, weekly, and monthly tickets are available, which are for unlimited travel on the metro system within the given period. In transferring, look for the passage marked Correspondence and follow the signs to the new line. The first train leaves the terminus at 5:30 AM and the last around 00:30 AM, which reaches the terminus at 1:15 AM. 17

The RER (line B) Subway Train also goes to airports- ticket: 8.40 TIPPING Most waiters, bartenders, theater ushers, rest room attendants, and hotel employees receive a small salary and depend on tips for a great part of their income. You will be expected to tip for nearly all services. RESTAURANTS AND CABARETS A service charge of 18% is usually included in the bill. It is not necessary to leave anything more. If, however, you have required a great deal of service, or if you have given a party, the tip should be increased accordingly. In a top restaurant, the wine Stewart (sommelier) should be tipped. At a bar or sidewalk cafe, the service is always included. HOTELS A city tax of about 1 Euro per person per night is included to your bill for staying in a Paris hotel. A service charge of 18% is usually added to the bill. If not, divide an amount among the people who have served you. If the hall porter (Concierge) has performed many services for you, he should be given something extra. A doorman should get 2 Euro for calling a taxi. Baggage handling in a hotel is 3 Euro per bag. THEATERS, MOVIES AND MUSEUMS Movie ushers and theater ushers are to be tipped, a minimum of 1 Euro is recommended. At the Théatre de France (Odéon) and the Théatre National Populaire, tipping is forbidden. A general practice 19

21 Feeling safe in Paris To make sure you travel around as safely as possible in Paris, the Police Prefecture provides practical advice and useful phone numbers. YOUR MONEY Carry as little cash as you can. Carry your money in several places (bags, pockets...) Keep the PIN code numbers of your credit cards confidential and note them down in a safe place in the case of loss or theft. YOUR IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS In case of loss or theft keep a photocopy of your I.D. to facilitate the reissue. Note down the address and phone number of your temporary residence and keep them with you. YOUR VEHICLE Close windows and lock doors, induding the boot. Do not leave any valuable items in full view (mobile phone, camera, clothes...) PUBLIC PLACES AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Do not leave your bags and luggage unattended and do not accept any bags or packages from stranger. In case of discovery of any suspicious item, do not touch it and immediately approach the police services. Keep your mobile phone in a safe place. 21
