6 Leadership Profile Fosca Giannotti is an active researcher in computer science for 30 years. In the first part of her career, the focus of her activity was on formal methods in programming, especially logic programming; progressively, she shifted towards logic and formal methods in databases and, eventually, to data mining and knowledge discovery. Her path, essentially, is from computing to data to knowledge, with a progression tied up with logic and formal methods, and a natural taste for combining theory with empirical evidence through data analysis. The scientific production has been progressively increasing despite her shift of topics. Her 121 publications reported by the dblp.uni-trier.de Computer Science Bibliography rank her around the 1500 th position within the list of the most prolific computer science researchers internationally (note that there are 11,000+ researchers with at least 50 publications on DBLP.) The key steps of her scientific career are sketched below Research fellow at University of Pisa. In the beginning of her career, F.G. investigated partial evaluation and symbolic execution in functional programming (the subject of her master thesis supervised by Professor Franco Turini); the excellent theoretical results achieved yield two journal publications and foster her passion for research. She starts to work in the area of database languages thanks to a research fellowships within the national Progetto Finalizzato Informatica. She designed and implemented a type-checking framework foran object-oriented database language based on type polymorphism and type hierarchies: a pioneering work, published in 1985, which preceded of several years the widespread effort devoted in the nineties to this kind of type systems : research in industrial R&D labs. In 1985 F.G. gets a permanent position in one of the many R&D labs active in Pisa at the time (SIPE Optimation and Systems & Management). The industrial context exposes her to two experiences that deeply influence her future career. The Logiform project: she collaborates with N. Ciaramella and F. Turini to shaping two ideas that will reveal disrupting in the following years, but were not understood by the industrial management at the time: spreadsheets and On Line Analytical Processing. F.G. remembers when she and her collaborators succeeds to present the idea in a meeting with the CEO of S&M, a big nation-wide company at the time, trying to convince him of the usefulness of a tool, implemented in Prolog, capable to make a table alive and realize directly a budget, a resource allocation sheet or a timetable, possibly getting the data from an underlying database. The CEO was kind to the young researchers, but remained convinced that logic programming was too far from reality contemporarily, on the other side of the ocean a group of Boston-area researchers proposed VisiCalc, which became Excel a few years later. The PACT European ESPRIT1 project: she collaborates by bringing in the ideas of Logiform applied to the problems of resource allocation. This experience is relevant for the tight collaboration with the project coordinator, Ian Thomas, who exposes F.G. to the complexity of management of large research initiatives at European level : visiting scientist at MCC research center, Austin, Texas. The period spent in Texas as a NATO-CNR fellow was crucial to initiate the activity in databases: in collaboration with Dino Pedreschi and Carlo Zaniolo, formerly at MCC Austin and later at UCLA, a framework for logic database languages (deductive databases) was proposed, capable of dealing with the notion of non determinism and non monotonic reasoning. The subject of this study is specifically the theoretical and empirical characterization of the expressive power of the queries in the proposed framework. This line of research also brought to many publications and to the construction of a popular deductive database system, the LDL system. The final publication in this line is Semantics and Expressive Power of Nondeterministic Constructs in Deductive Databases, published in the J. of Computer and System Sciences in onwards: researcher at CNR. In 1990 she gets a permanent researcher position in the Italian National Research Council, CNR, and decides to resign as an industrial researcher. She continues at the CNUCE institute of CNR her research program started at MCC Austin, centered on deductive databases and abstract interpretation of programming languages. F.G. is promoted to Primo Ricercatore in 2001 and Director of Research in onwards: the construction of the KDD LAB. The most important shift in F.G. s scientific career takes place around 1995, when, together with colleagues Dino Pedreschi and Franco Turini of Univ. Pisa, 6

7 she starts the Pisa Knowledge Discovery and Delivery Laboratory KDD LAB a joint initiative of the two research institutions (CNR and Univ. Pisa) aimed at research in the emerging field of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases. Since then, when KDD LAB was the earliest research lab in data mining in Italy and one of the earliest in Europe, it has grown as an established joint, interdisciplinary initiative, and gained a solid international reputation in the highly competitive area of data mining. In 2004, KDD LAB organized the European Conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases ECML-PKDD (F.G. is program co-chair), while in December 2008 it organizes the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining ICDM, the premiere international forum for data mining researchers (F.G. is program chair.) Today, KDD LAB can count on 7 researchers, 6 post-docs, 5 PhD students, 3 technicians, and a variable number of international visitors. Data mining, i.e., the process of automatically discovering useful information in large data repositories, reveals as a natural development of F.G. scientific career, where theoretical and empirical investigation are intertwined and interdisciplinary team work is the rule. Early results were application oriented, e.g., a logic-based data mining methodology for market basket analysis in the retail industry, and the development of a predictive model for identifying tax evaders starting from the fiscal data warehouse of the Italian Ministry of Finance the results of the fiscal fraud detection study were published at the ACM KDD Conf. in 1999 (acceptance rate 10%). For this project, F.G. coordinates a team of 5 young researchers: Francesco Bonchi, Giuseppe Manco, Elio Masciari, Luigi Pontieri and Massimo Coppola today, all five are recognized researchers, either in CNR or industrial research labs (F. Bonchi is a senior researcher at Yahoo! Research Barcelona.) Today, KDD LAB continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to deploy data mining prediction models into their routine activity of inspection against tax evasion. On another line, KDD LAB has a long-standing collaboration with Coop, the largest Italian supermarket chain, in the analysis and mining of sale transaction data for advanced CRM applications. The most recognized scientific results arrived after 2000: first, the development of a constraint-based pattern discovery methodology supported complex data mining querying to datasets of unprecedented size and complexity: these results have been published on various journals, including high-impact divulgation oriented journals such as IEEE Intelligent Systems. Second, a brand new interdisciplinary direction was started, at the crossroads of mobility, data mining and privacy, i.e., privacy-aware spatiotemporal data mining from mobility data, such as the data gathered by wireless networks and locationaware devices. Third the research community recognized the scientific solidity of the lab assigning the scientific responsibility of two of the major conferences of the area: respectively ECML/PKDD held in 2004 and IEEE ICDM held in : the GeoPKDD projects. F.G. is the proposer and later the coordinator of the European FP6 FET project GeoPKDD Geographic Privacy-aware Knowledge Discovery and Delivery Centered on mobility, data mining and privacy, GeoPKDD involves more than 40 researchers from 8 different European countries, many of those young postdocs, and produces a great deal of high-impact new scientific results, becoming the reference for the rapidly blossoming area of the analysis of mobility data sensed by mobile phones and other localization devices. F.G. is also co-editor of the book Mobility, Data Mining and Privacy, published by Springer in This new area of research, started by F.G. and her colleagues, emerged as a hot topic, with plenty of activity in many new workshops on spatio-temporal data mining and privacy-preserving data mining. The early results by F.G. in trajectory pattern discovery, trajectory clustering and anonymity-preserving pattern discovering, presented at major data mining conferences in the last five years, contributed to forge the newly emergent area, and influenced the research of many young researchers within and outside the GeoPKDD community. The results obtained by GeoPKDD brought a wide recognition to KDD LAB as a leading research hub on mobility data mining and data privacy technologies, becoming a reference not only for the international research community but also for leading industrial and public operators, such as telecom providers (Orange, Wind, Telecom Italia), the Italian and European Data Protection Commissions, the mobility agencies of regional and municipal administrations : responsible for the area Data Mining of the CNR ICT Department. F.G. becomes the national coordinator of the area Data Mining and Semantic Web of the ICT department of CNR, with responsibility of harmonizing the activities of 12 labs of 9 different CNR institutes involving 90 permanent researchers and 120 early-stage researchers. The goal is to create a network of CNR researchers on the topic of knowledge and data engineering and promote their results and potential 7

8 applications towards industry and the public administration. Her duties involve dissemination actions, proposal preparation, definition of strategic lines of research at national level, harmonization with European policies, hearings with funding agencies, etc : visiting scientist at the Center for Complex Network Research. From August 2009 through July 2010, F.G. is on leave as a sabbatical scholar at Barabási Lab, i.e. the CCNR lab at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, led by Albert-László Barabási. This experience is extremely important in bringing forward the vision of convergence of data mining and (social) network analysis into a broader data-driven science, capable of uncovering complex social and economic phenomena on the basis of models and patterns extracted from the big data made available by ICT-mediated human activities. A fruitful collaboration between KDD LAB and CCNR has been initiated, which is already bringing joint results. A first joint project shows how the combined methods of data mining and network science can provide deeper insight into the interplay between human mobility and the social network, and how the movement behavior of people impacts the dynamics of social ties : the FuturICT Flagship experience. From March 2011 through October 2012, F.G. has been involved into setting up the proposal for the FuturICT FET Flagship ( a research program for 10-years of basic research aimed at shaping a new ICT paradigm at the crossroad of ICT, Complex Systems and the Social Sciences. The initiative has involved more than 300 researchers all over Europe, and CNR was one of the 5 major proponents. The CNR team was lead by Dott.ssa Rosaria Conte of ISTC-CNR and F.G has been appointed by the Director of ICT Department of CNR, prof. Pietrabissa to coordinate the ICT component of the proposal. FuturICT was not selected for funding, but indeed the experience has been valuable both from the point of the community that has been created and the research roadmap that has been shaped. F.G. participated to the writing of following white papers published into The European Physical Journal Special Topics Vol. 214: the first two represent the pillars of privacyaware social data mining while the last focuses on the application of such paradigm for a new City Science. In a nutshell, F.G. believes that the most relevant achievement of her career has been her early intuition, around 1992, of data mining as a high potential area of disruptive impact and the her determination in constructing a research group around this vision, capable of gaining international visibility. The KDD LAB is a tangible result of this vision, being today a reference for the data mining research community, one of the largest and most competitive today, a front-runner in the new wave of big data analytics, capable of attracting international visitors, post-docs, and students. 10-Year-Track-Record The Computer Science Bibliography server counts 157 publications of F.G. on June 2013, and ranks her around the 1500 th position within the list of the most prolific computer science researchers internationally (DBLP has 18,000+ CS researchers with at least 50 publications.)
