1 Credit Markets Symposium 2009 Speaker Bios Sally Green Master of Ceremonies Sally Green became first vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in 2006, after working nearly 30 years at the Boston Fed, where she rose to the position of executive vice president. Green has held leadership positions in Federal Reserve financial services operations and has participated in national payments strategy forums. Prior to joining the Fed, Green worked at ABT Associates on projects for federal agencies. She earned a bachelor s degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Matthew Martin Facilitator Matthew Martin is senior vice president and Charlotte regional executive for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Martin received a bachelor s degree in economics from the U.S. Military Academy and a doctorate in economics from the University of Delaware. Prior to joining the Richmond Fed in 2006 as a regional economist, Martin worked for Moody s, the Congressional Budget Office and taught at Kent State University. Mickey Levy Presenter Mickey D. Levy is chief economist for Bank of America, where he analyzes and forecasts economic performance and financial market behavior. He also conducts research on monetary and fiscal policies. Levy also serves on the Shadow Open Market Committee and is an advisor to several Federal Reserve Banks. John Silvia Presenter John Silvia joined Wachovia Corporation as its chief economist in 2002 after working as senior economist for the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee and as chief economist for the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Prior to his government service, Silvia was chief economist of Kemper Funds and managing director of Scudder Kemper Investments. He holds bachelor s and doctoral degrees in economics from Northeastern University and a master s from Brown University. Raghuram Rajan Speaker Raghuram Rajan is the Eric J. Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago s Graduate School of Business. He serves as an economic advisor to the prime minister of India and chairs the Indian government s Committee on Financial Sector Reforms. He also held the position of chief economist at the International Monetary Fund from 2003 until Rajan s research

2 interests are in banking, corporate finance and economic development. He was awarded the inaugural Fischer Black Prize by the American Finance Association. Rajan received a bachelor s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, earned an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management and received his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jon D. Greenlee Moderator Jon Greenlee is associate director for risk management in Banking Supervision and Regulation for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. His responsibilities include oversight of the strategic direction and work of the Board s credit, market and liquidity, operational and compliance risk sections. He came to the Board in 2001from the San Francisco Fed and also worked for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He holds a bachelor s degree in finance from Indiana State University. Curtis Arledge Panelist Curtis Arledge is a managing director and portfolio manager of BlackRock and previously worked in investment banking for Wachovia Corporation. He was a founding member of Mariner Investment Group, prior to which he worked for BlackRock. Arledge began his career as a Salomon Brothers analyst. David Mengle Panelist David Mengle is head of research at the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, with responsibility for education, survey, and risk management and regulatory research activities. He also teaches economics and risk management course at the Fordham University Graduate School of Business. Mengle worked for JP Morgan and was a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. He is a graduate of the Citadel and received a doctorate in economics from UCLA. Barry Zubrow Panelist Barry L. Zubrow is the chief risk officer and executive vice president of JPMorgan Chase. He worked for Goldman Sachs for 26 years, serving in a number of positions, including chief administrative officer and on the risk and credit committees. He chairs the New Jersey Schools Development Authority and is an advisor to Gov. Jon Corzine. Zubrow graduated from Haverford College and received MBA and law degrees from the University of Chicago. Christopher Calabia Moderator Christopher Calabia is a vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, specializing in the regulation of internationally active banks. He leads a department that monitors and analyzes industry trends. Calabia has spoken widely on risk management and bank capital regulations and assisted in the development of the Basel II capital requirements for banks. He graduated from the University of

3 Virginia and the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Craig Broderick Panelist Craig Broderick is chief risk officer for Goldman Sachs with responsibility for credit, market and operational risk. He chairs the Goldman Sachs Bank Risk Committee and was the firm s chief credit officer until Broderick worked previously for Chase Manhattan Bank. He received a bachelor s degree in economics from the College of William and Mary. Gene Guill Panelist Gene Guill is a managing director of Deutsche Bank with responsibility for valuation and risk management models and practices for various company portfolios. He has held positions in credit risk management, econometric modeling and forecasting at Bankers Trust, DRI McGraw Hill, Wharton EFA and Stanford Research Institute. He has served as chairman and director of the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers. Guill graduated from Davidson College and received a doctorate in economics from Duke University. Ivan Marcotte Panelist Ivan Marcotte is global portfolio strategies executive for Bank of America, where he has worked for 20 years. During his career, Marcotte has served in several important risk management and portfolio analysis roles. He was a founding member of the Risk Management Association Market Risk Roundtable and was chairman of the International Association of Credit Portfolio Managers. Marcotte graduated from Virginia Military Institute and earned a doctorate in economics from the University of South Carolina. Trish Nunley Moderator Trish Nunley was named deputy general counsel of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond in She joined the Richmond Fed s legal staff in 1995 after having worked as general counsel to Dominion Bankshares Corporation and serving as an assistant commonwealth s attorney in Alleghany County, Virginia. She also held positions with law firms in Covington, Va., and Richmond. She received a bachelor s degree in zoology from Miami University and a law degree from the University of Richmond. Michael Alix Panelist Michael Alix is a senior vice president in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York s bank supervision group and serves as a senior advisor to the executive vice president. He was chief risk officer at Bear Stearns Companies and previously was global head of credit risk management. He also worked in credit

4 positions at Merrill Lynch and began his banking career at Irving Trust Company. Alix is a graduate of Duke University and earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania s Wharton School. John Bovenzi Panelist John Bovenzi has been deputy to the chairman and chief operating officer of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for 10 years, directing day to day operations of the FDIC and serving as principal advisor to the chairman. He joined the FDIC in 1981 as a financial economist. He has held positions with the FDIC related to bank closings and receivership management and last year was CEO of IndyMac Federal Bank, which is an FDIC owned and operated conservatorship. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts and received his master s and doctoral degrees in economics from Clark University. Michael C. Clarke Panelist Michael C. Clarke is head of collateral management and client valuations for UBS, leading a team of 200 professionals in 11 locations worldwide. Also at UBS, he has led the business development and strategy functions for exchange traded derivatives and collateral management. Prior to working at UBS, Clarke held similar positions at Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan and was senior vice president at SunGard Trading and Risk Systems. He holds a degree from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London. Steven Lofchie Panelist Steven Lofchie is co chairman of the financial services department of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. His practice is concentrated in advising financial institutions on regulatory issues, derivatives and other financial instruments. He is the author of Lofchie s Guide to Broker Dealer Regulations, and has been active in developing Web based compliance tools. He received a law degree from Yale University and an MBA from Columbia University. John Weinberg Moderator John Weinberg has been senior vice president and director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond since He joined the Richmond Fed s Research department in 1992 after teaching at Purdue University. Weinberg is the author of numerous papers and publications on economics. He earned a bachelor s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in economics from the University of Minnesota. Doug Warren Panelist Doug Warren is a managing director at Barclays Capital, where he leads derivatives counterparty risk management for the Americas. Warren was head of credit derivatives training at Citigroup prior to joining Barclays. He has been active in the development of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, as well as the development of industry standards for credit derivatives trading. Warren

5 graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and received a doctorate in electrical engineering from Princeton University. Nancy Wentzler Panelist Nancy Wentzler is chief economist for the Office of Comptroller of the Currency and serves as deputy comptroller for global banking and financial analysis. Prior to her work at the OCC, she held positions with the Office of Thrift Supervision, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Office of Management and Budget. She previously taught at Virginia Tech. Wentzler received a bachelor s degree from Penn State University and a doctorate in economics from the University of Wisconsin. Ben S. Bernanke Speaker Ben S. Bernanke became chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in At the time of his appointment, he was chairman of the President s Council of Economic Advisers. He previously served as a member of the Board of Governors from 2002 to 2005 and had been a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, Philadelphia and New York. Before his government service, Bernanke was an economics professor at Princeton University, and earlier at Stanford University. He earned a bachelor s degree at Harvard University and a doctorate in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
