5 Fiscal Highlights! By the end of the 2011 fiscal year, Springfield Public Schools had nearly $40 million in fund balances, including $32,410,373 in the Education and Working Cash funds alone.! New board policy requires budgets to maintain total fund balance at 15 percent of revenues (for Education, Operations, Transportation, Tort, and Working Cash funds).! Board policy requires more budget transparency than in the past.! Long-term bonds are rated Aa2 by Moodyʼs. Defined as high quality with very low credit risk.!
6 Economic Development $29,000,000 in building upgrades performed , as part of nearly $90 million in Health-Life Safety work taking place during the next five years.! The HLS work covers 12 schools and includes HVAC upgrades/replacements, geothermal installation, roofing, window replacement, and foundation waterproofing.! Two new schools to be built during next five years: Enos and Matheny-Withrow Elementary Schools.! Most of the HLS funds will be spent on local contractors.! Estimated creation of 829 jobs this year (including onsite, suppliers, and jobs induced beyond the construction projects resulting from a rise in consumer spending). 2,574 jobs overall estimated throughout HLS work.!
7 District Highlights Vachel Lindsay Elementary School named a Blue Ribbon School! Numerous choice, magnet programs, and specialty programs: Iles (IB), Lincoln Magnet, Ball Charter School, and the Capital College Preparatory Academy, Health and Life Science Academy (Southeast High), Franklin gifted program.! Iles School, among the top-ranked schools in the state, has received International Baccalaureate certification.! Weekend and professional academies: P4 (medicine), engineering, nursing, scientific research.! District-wide declines in suspensions and improved academic performance.! Our new literacy program (SLIM); SWOT analysis of our special education department; deployment of Response to Intervention; and high school reforms, including freshmen academies, summer bridge programs, and the SIG initiative at Lanphier are designed to target many different kinds of struggling students.! Other innovations: uniform dress codes, two balanced-calendar schools, Illinois Math and Science Academy programs at our middle schools, one-on-one laptops and ipads in classrooms, stronger graduation requirements, more collaboration among teachers, and professional development.! Many businesses, charities, churches, and volunteers are committed to our schools and students.! New teachers contract includes a strong evaluation piece that keeps ahead of changes in state law.!
