Piano Each student will take private piano lessons during the semester regardless of the level one may be either, a beginner or advanced. The student will perform 2 prepared pieces at the end of the semester before a jury. Unit II. Practical I Marks: 30 a. Play triads in root position in all white and black keys. b. 4 Course Code: MUS(H) 104 Course Title: Piano II Unit I. Piano II SEMESTER II (HONOURS) Marks: 70 Each student will continue to take private piano lessons during the semester will perform 2 prepared pieces at the end of the semester before a jury. Unit II. Practical II Marks: 30 a. Keyboard chord progressions. b. Be able to play all major scales and minor scales (harmonic or melodic) up to two flats and two sharp keys. Course Description Music Theory I This study includes the following music fundamentals: elementary acoustics, keyboard layout, clefs, note identification, key and time signatures, meter, rhythm, intervals, scales, triads, figured bass, diatonic voice-leading, cadences, and elementary harmonic progressions. Music Theory II Continuation of MUS 101 with emphasis on voice leading and harmonic progressions. It includes more part-writing, non-harmonic tones, cadences, figured bass, and Roman analysis. Practical I and II (P) This is an integrated course involving the study of elementary sight singing, ear training, conducting, and basic keyboard knowledge. Piano I and II (H) It is necessary for every musician regardless of the preferred instruments to have a basic proficiency in piano. Hence, every honour candidates will be required to take private piano lessons in the first year of the course. Practical I and II (H) This constitutes further in depth keyboard knowledge for the honour students. Patkai Christian College 4

9 COURSE DESCRIPTION Music Appreciation A survey of world music. An overview of cultural contexts and approaches to the study of indigenous music including Western music constitutes the nature of this course. Harmony I and II These two courses cover the study of extended chords; various types of altered nonharmonic tones and chords; modulation and; modal harmony. Music History I A chronological, historical approach to Western music as practiced from antiquity to the Baroque period. Practicals Practicals are integrated with previous semester s courses in sight singing and ear training. The conducting segment will require the student to work with a choir or ensemble involving the teaching and performance of some standard choral works. 13 Course Description SEMESTER V (PASS AND HONORS) Hymnology This course aims to acquaint the student with the literary, theological, scriptural, musical, historical, and practical foundations of songs used in the church. The course will also equip the student with some basic resources of hymnological research. World Music This course will introduce the students to experience and understand music in the context of human life. Students will learn how a beginner may document, sing, and perform his own or music of another culture. Music History II A chronological, historical approach to Western music as practiced from the Baroque era to the twentieth century. Introduction to Ethnomusicology This course will introduce the student to the basic elements of ethnomusicology: brief history, working definitions, and theoretical and practical tools in the study of music in culture. Practicals These are integrated courses continuing the study of more advanced sight singing (standard classical piece), ear training (includes 4-part harmonic dictation) and conducting. The conducting segment will require the student to lead the music in a worship setting as well as teach a choir. Students will also experience teaching music fundamentals in a classroom setting (high school level). Honour students will be expected to play hymns in a congregational setting. 15 Statement of Purpose DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC UGC Sponsored Career Oriented Course In MUSIC The department seeks to impart music education of the highest quality possible in order to foster a creative, competitive, and a productive learning spirit among the students. 1. Develop in students an awareness of the power of music to encourage self-realization and mastery, social understanding and enrichment, and an appreciation of the value of musical service to our community and culture. 2. Equip students from any stream of studies to teach basic music rudimentary with competency and skill, thereby, providing more options for employment.
