4 CIHR s Funding Opportunities Database This database: provides a complete listing of current and archived opportunities is searchable can be viewed by Institute, program type, or target applicant
5 Undergraduate : CIHR Health Professional Student Research Award This program funds Health Professional students enrolled in an undergraduate program (such as nursing or dental hygiene), graduate program (such as psychology or social work) or health professional program (such as chiropractic medicine) leading to Canadian licensure. Value: From $4,251 and up to $5,961 per voucher, for students enrolled in combined programs. Term: up to 13 weeks Last competition was in December 2014, but vouchers are still accepted until February For more details, contact the Office of the Vice- President, Research, at your Canadian institution
6 Canada Graduate Scholarships Master s Program This program funds high caliber scholars who are engaged in eligible Masters or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada. Candidates must have completed, as of December 31st of the year of application, between 0 and 12 months of full-time studies. Annual Stipend: $17,500 Term: up to 12-month Application Deadline: December 1 st, 2015 Number of Awards Available: 400
7 To be eligible to apply, you must: Canada Graduate Scholarships Master s Program (Eligibility) be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; be enrolled in, have applied for, or will apply for full-time admission* to an eligible graduate program at the master s or doctoral level at a Canadian institution with a CGS M allocation. Note: Applicants who are not currently enrolled in their intended graduate program must submit an application for admission by the deadline for their intended graduate program or by March 15, whichever comes first; have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of full-time studies (or full-time equivalent) in: the master s program for which you are requesting funding; or the direct-entry doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or the combined master s-doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or a master s program, which has been or will be fast-tracked to a doctoral program, and you are requesting funding for the first 12 months of this doctoral program.
8 Canada Graduate Scholarships Master s Program (Eligibility con t) To be eligible to apply, you must: not have previously held a CGS M; have achieved a first-class average, as determined by the host institution, in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent); and submit a maximum of one CGS M application per year (the Research Portal will allow the application to be submitted to up to five institutions refer to Application Procedures). Note: Applicants are not eligible to receive or accept a CGS M offer from an institution where they are not currently enrolled in, nor have applied for admission to, an eligible program of study.
9 Canada Graduate Scholarships Master s Program (Application Components) The application includes: The application form; The outline of the proposed research (including the bibliography and citations); All required undergraduate and graduate transcripts; The Canadian Common CV validated for the CGS-M program; and Two reference assessments. It is important to note that an application/task marked complete does not necessarily mean that all the required information has been included. Ensure to view your application before submitting it!
10 To apply, you must: Canada Graduate Scholarships Master s Program (How to Apply) Create an account on the Research Portal : Log into your account; Click on Create Applications; Select the CGS M Program from the list and click on Create; Follow the instructions on how to complete an application, and the instructions on how to complete the CCV. All necessary information about the CGS M program can be accessed through the links listed on the following web page: crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/cgsharmonization- HarmonizationBESC_eng.asp.

12 Doctoral Awards Funding is available for Doctoral students in Canada and Abroad. Three envelopes of funding: Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (VCGS) Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Awards (CGS-D) CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Award (CIHR DFSA)
13 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students and offered by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC Aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies Applicants must be nominated by a Canadian university with a Vanier allocation and awards can only be held at the nominating university Deadline (university nominations): November 4, 2015 Value: $50,000 per annum Duration: Three years
14 Doctoral Awards CGS-D & DFSA This program funds Canadian students and permanent residents who are pursuing a PhD degree in a health-related field in Canada or abroad. Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award (CGS-D) - for the top-ranked applicants pursuing doctoral research training at a Canadian institution Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA) - for the top-ranked applicants pursuing doctoral research training abroad Stipend per annum: $30,000 Research Allowance per annum: $5,000 Term: Up to three years Application Deadline: October 1, 2015
15 CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS) This program funds existing Canadian Vanier and Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) Master s or Doctoral award recipients interested in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional short-term research experiences at research institutions outside of Canada. Supplement: up to $6,000 Term: three to six months Next Application Deadline: October 10, 2015 To beneficiate from this program, candidates must have accepted or hold a CGS (Masters or Doctoral) or Vanier CGS and not have held previously a CGS-MSFSS
16 CGS to Honour Nelson Mandela These awards celebrate Nelson Mandela s legacy, and his tireless pursuit of peace, democracy, justice and freedom through learning, understanding and education. The awards seek to recognize and support graduate students conducting research in one or more of five areas championed by Nelson Mandela: national unity; democracy, freedom and human rights; leadership; children s participation in society; and children s health. Number of awards: Up to 10 CGS Master s (CGS-M); and Up to 10 CGS Doctoral (CGS-D)
17 CIHR MD/PhD Program Grants This program funds MD/PhD Program Directors for support of students pursuing a combined MD/PhD degree at a Canadian institution. Annual Stipend : $21,000 Annual Research Allowance: $1,000 Term: up to six years Application Deadline: September 15, 2015 (Institutions) Funds Available: approximately 18 vouchers per annum
18 Fellowship Awards Funding is available for student at the post-phd and post-health professional degree level. Two envelopes of funding: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program CIHR Fellowships
19 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program Objectives: Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent nationally and internationally; Develop their leadership potential; and Position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canada's economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career. Deadline: September 23, 2015 Annual Stipend Value: $70,000 Duration: Two years
20 CIHR Fellowship This program funds trainees with PhD and/or health professional degree(s) that are proposing research training in Canada or abroad. Annual Stipend : $21,000 to $55,000, Depending on the background of the recipient and location of the award Annual Research Allowance : $5,000 Term : Up to five years Depending on the intended use of the award Application Deadline : November 2, 2015
21 Priority Announcements Offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas. Candidates may request to be considered for up to three priority announcement research areas in each competition, within their application. Priority Announcements are offered through the Fellowship and Doctoral Research Awards.
22 Application process Award programs use an automated application process through the use of ResearchNet (with few exceptions) Candidates should review the following: How to Apply section of the funding opportunity to which they are applying as well as the Application Instructions FAQ s related to the funding opportunity CIHR Reviewers Guide to get a perspective of how the application will be evaluated Grants and Awards Guide for policies related to the administration of applications and awards
23 Evaluation Criteria Most training awards applications are based on the following three review criteria: Achievements and Activities of the Candidate Publication and other activities, academic performance Characteristics and Abilities of the Candidate Critical thinking, Independence, Perseverance, Originality, Organizational skills, Interest in discovery, Research Ability & Leadership Research Training Environment Training program, scientific activities, research resources, training record. Consult the CIHR Reviewers Guide for each program
24 CIHR Sponsor s Assessments Candidates should choose sponsors that know them well enough to be able: to assess their potential to provide specific examples of their behaviour with respect to each characteristic on the sponsor assessment form For most programs, an automatic will be sent through ResearchNet to the chosen sponsors: After all sponsors have submitted their assessments, this task will be marked as Complete in the ResearchNet Application Task List Sponsors must submit their assessments 48hrs prior to the competition deadline date
25 Applications to more than one competition Applicants may only apply to one competition per year (September 1 st to August 31 st ) for funding from any of these: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Exception to this rule: Individuals eligible to apply to the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program or the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program may also submit an application to the agency specific program.
26 Tips for applicants Follow instructions and adhere to format guidelines (e.g., font, page limits) Use the full page allowances and/or characters limits Order the transcripts several weeks before the deadline (if applicable) A CCV may be required for supervisors (see funding opportunity). If so, a CIHR PIN for supervisors are also required. In order to attach their CCV to the application, applicant will require their CCV confirmation number. During peak periods, there can be a delay between the time that the CV is being submitted and when ResearchNet is able to validate it. It is highly recommended that the CV be submitted well in advance of the competition deadline.
27 Tips for applicants All applicants are encouraged to find out the institution internal deadline for application submission they are in advance of the CIHR deadlines start several weeks before the deadline work on the research proposal in collaboration with their supervisor/mentor proofread their application show the complete application to their supervisor/mentor, peers and other researchers for feedback Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. All ResearchNet tasks must be listed as complete in order to allow successful application submission. Do not wait until the last minute to submit the application!
28 Tips for applicants For applicants to CGS-M funding opportunity specifically: If you select Health as your Field of Research, you must also provide a CIHR Personal Identification Number (PIN). It takes up to one full working day to process your CIHR PIN request. For program-related information, contact the Faculty of Graduate Studies (or equivalent) at the institution(s) where you intend to hold the award. For technical matters related to the Research Portal or the CCV, contact the Helpdesk, or complete an On-line Services Support Request.
29 Common issues with CCV Degree information (completed or in progress) must be provided. Interruptions or situations that could explain delays in training and research should be listed in the sub-section Leaves of Absence and Impact on Research under Employment. CV attachment entitled List of Publications should provide, for each multi-authored publication, the role of the candidate in the publication and their percent contribution to the team effort. Candidates may also comment on environmental factors that affected their capacity to publish (Maximum of 2 pages).
30 Selection Process Each program has a set of peer review committees that are created specifically to review applications for that program: Most committees review applications relevant to a specific research theme or group of themes Committees for Doctoral and Fellowships awards use an individual review process. Reviews are done individually by reviewers and submitted to CIHR via ResearchNet.
