Sports Office Contacts: ISSUE 19 : 14 November 2014 (Sheldon College Oracle for Optimal Performance in Sport) Telephone (07) Facsimile (07) Wet Weather 1800 SHELDON sport@sheldoncollege.com For updated Sporting information, please visit SPORTS AWARDS DINNER The sixth annual Sports Awards Dinner was held on Saturday, 8 November in the Sheldon Event Centre. Our audience of just under 300 guests was joined by special guests, Olympic Triathlete, Emma Jackson, and Sheldon College graduate and Oceania steeplechase champion, Nikki Hiscock. In addition to awards being presented to our District, Met East and Queensland representatives, Athlete of the Year awards were presented for each of our major sports, culminating with our Sportsperson of the Year Awards at the end of the night. Our Sportspersons of the Year: Max Hooper, Georgia Lane, Shaun Earp (Joanne Miller was absent at the Met East Triathlon trials) pictured with Mr David Savage, Miss Emma Jackson and Miss Nikki Hiscock.

The Sportspersons of the Year nominees and winners. PRIMARY SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES (and the sports they have represented the College in this year) ISABELLA HARRIS - Cross Country, Track & Field, Netball, Aquathlon RACHEL HOWSE - Netball, Touch Football, Swimming GEORGIA LANE - Basketball, Cross Country, Track & Field, Aquathlon EMILY MACBETH - Cross Country, Track & Field, Basketball GEORGIA LANE was named the winner of the Primary Sportswoman of the Year Georgia is a fantastic basketball player, who played a key role in our premiership-winning Under 13 A team, which won the top division in the Spartans club competition. She also represented Met East in basketball this year, despite being a bottom age player, and gained selection in the Spartans division 1 club representative team. In addition to her basketball exploits, Georgia also had a great year in Cross Country running, representing the College, her District and Met East at the State Championships. Georgia was also a College and District representative for Track & Field, and will tomorrow morning compete for Sheldon in her very first aquathlon. Beyond these achievements, Georgia is a great role model for all other athletes at the school, always putting her team before herself, and never out to seek personal recognition. PRIMARY SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES (and the sports they have represented the College in this year) JUSTIN BROWN - Cross Country, Track & Field, Basketball, Soccer JEAN-LUC FULLER - Triathlon, Cross Country, Track & Field. MAX HOOPER - Track & Field, Cross Country, Touch Football JAKE JACKSON - Cross Country, Touch Football, Track & Field LACHLAN MCBAIN - Track & Field, Cross Country, Touch Football DREW PRICE - Touch Football, Cross Country, Track & Field, Soccer, AFL MAX HOOPER was named the winner of the Primary Sportswoman of the Year. Quite simply, Max is a freak of an athlete who has had an unbelievable first year at representative level! In Cross Country, Max was third in Australia.

In the 800m, he is first in Queensland, and is looking forward to racing against the best the other states have to offer at the upcoming National Primary School Championships. Despite a very heavy training load for running, Max also represented Sheldon College in Touch Football this year, proving himself to be a very handy player. Max regularly shows up students many years his senior at training, as he quite simply needs to come first in every race and every training exercise. SECONDARY SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES (and the sports they have represented the College in this year) BRIDIE CLAFFEY Basketball, Track & Field, Volleyball MELA GILLARD Basketball, Cross Country, Swimming, Volleyball COURTNEY GIBSON AFL, Cross Country, Tennis, Track & Field ELLIE-ANN GREEN Cross Country, Netball, Touch Football, Track & Field, Volleyball MOLLIE HARRIS Cross Country, Netball, Track & Field, Volleyball JAMIE HISCOCK Basketball, Cross Country, Swimming, Touch Football, Track & Field, Volleyball ELLIE LAWSON Cross Country, Netball, Track & Field, Volleyball HANNAH LORD Cross Country, Swimming, Track & Field, Triathlon ZOE MAIDMENT Cross Country, Netball, Swimming, Track & Field, Volleyball GEORGIA MCGUINESS AFL, Basketball, Cross Country, Touch Football, Track & Field, Volleyball JOANNE MILLER Cross Country, Swimming, Touch Football, Track & Field, Triathlon, Volleyball HAYLEY PARTRIDGE Cross Country, Netball, Swimming, Track & Field, Triathlon KATINKA VON ELSNER-WELLSTEED Cross Country, Netball, Swimming, Track & Field, Triathlon JOANNE MILLER was named the winner of the Secondary Sportswoman of the Year. Jo Miller is an exceptionally gifted athlete who excels at a wide range of sports. Tonight she claims the Secondary Sportswoman of the Year award for the fourth year in a row. This year, Jo represented Met East at the state championships in no less than three sports Triathlon, Cross Country and Track & Field. She also played Touch Football for the College, a sport in which she has previously also been a Met East representative. Jo was a member of this year s Open Girls A gold medal winning Volleyball team, and also represented the College in swimming. To cap it all off, Jo was this year crowned National Champion for Duathlon at the Australian Titles held recently in Adelaide.

SECONDARY SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEES (and the sports they have represented the College in this year) NICHOLAS BOGNAR AFL, Track & Field, Volleyball CONNOR BRADFIELD Cross Country, Swimming, Touch Football, Track & Field, Volleyball SHAUN EARP Cross Country, Track & Field, Triathlon JOHN GALLAGHER AFL, Cross Country, Track & Field AIDAN FULLER Cross Country, Swimming, Track & Field, Triathlon LACHLAN JONES AFL, Basketball, Track & Field, Volleyball THOMAS MACBETH AFL, Basketball, Cross Country, Swimming, Touch Football, Track & Field WILL MORRIS AFL, Cross Country, Track & Field DUGALD STRACHAN AFL, Cross Country, Track & Field DAVID WEHL AFL, Soccer, Touch Football, Track & Field, Volleyball CHRISTIAN WILSON Swimming, Track & Field, Triathlon SHAUN EARP was named the winner of the Secondary Sportsman of the Year. In Cross Country, Shaun was a Queensland School Sport representative, and placed second of all 14 year-olds at the National Titles in Western Australia. In Track & Field, he was recently the fastest of all 14 year-olds in Queensland at the State Titles, and qualified to represent our state at the National Championships. His progression in Triathlon is also astounding. Despite only moving to this sport from running at the start of last year, he has already competed for Met East at the State Championships and placed 4th in his age group at the National Youth Championships in Twin Waters earlier this year. It is scary to think how good he will be once he has a few more years of swimming and cycling behind him. This selection involves Matthew representing BEARS against other representative teams locally and culminates in an Under 13 carnival to be held in Ipswich from 12 to 16 January Congratulations Matty! SWIMMING NEWS I would like to congratulate the performances of our senior swimmers who competed at the weekend s Brisbane Regional Swimming Championships. All swimmers did a fantastic job representing themselves and the Sheldon Club, each swimmer achieved new PB s in their best events and three swimmers achieved entry times for next month s Queensland State Championships. The game started quickly with both teams getting a basket within the first minute. The Sheldon boys rebounded well and passed the ball up the court to make some good baskets. After 10 minutes the boys had established a good lead of 13 points to 7. After 15 minutes all players in the team had scored at least one basket, which was the first time that has occurred this year. By half time the score was extended to 25 points to 9 in favour of Sheldon Navy. The second half was similar to the first with a good passing game resulting in 6 different players scoring. This highlights the depth of their attack that now exists when they play as a

team. Well done to all especially the coach, Mr Frewin for making such a big difference to the style of play that was prevalent at the beginning of the year. The game finished on a high with the game s top scorer Lachlan Kelly sinking a 3 pointer within the last 3 seconds resulting in lots of cheers all round. The final score reflected a great team effort, but more importantly the number of scorers demonstrated the depth within the team when they play as a team. U11 Boys Metro Navy 40 v Carina Eagles 45 The week had the boys (Ambrus Major, Lachlan Kelly, Liam Forbes, Keagan Forbes, Lachlan Andrews, Hayden McKillop and Cooper Jones) playing against the second placed team the Carina Eagles. The game started quickly with Sheldon getting the first basket and both teams traded baskets with the score locked at 12 all after 10 minutes. The Sheldon boys have been developing their passing game and they are now proficient at passing the ball forward to a team mate to score. It s a pleasure to watch. The Carina Eagles skipped out to a 5 point half time lead and started strong in the second half with 3 unanswered baskets; however the Sheldon boys were able to regroup and turn the scoring their way with some great team work and had levelled the score at 32 points each by 8 minutes into the second half. That was a great turnaround against a quality team which boasts 3 Division 1 rep players and 3 Division 3 rep players. The teams continued to trade basket for basket, but the Carina Eagles were able to establish a 5 point break in the last 5 minutes which was maintained until the final whistle. Although the boys went down narrowly to a team with a quality line-up, the boys were able to match it with them all the way through and were able to come back from a significant deficit. This game demonstrated what a quality team the U11 Sheldon Navy Metro have become. U13 Girls Metro Navy 50 v Jets Falcons 14 Spectators were treated to a fine display of teamwork again this week! Player of the Week went to Georgia Lane for threading the needle, weaving between opposing players as if they weren t there! Chelsea Anthony (18 points) was again top scorer, and Kaitlyn Evans (2 points) impressed with some lightning-fast passes. Sarah Millar (4 points) took some great rebounds, while Kyla Johnson (2 points) and Rachel Evans (12 points) made some well-timed intercepts. Danielle Bayes (12 points) played a brilliant all-round game. Great to watch, girls! PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Basketball U13 G M Navy Georgia Lane
