Salaries are increasing at their fastest pace since 2007, which suggests that SMEs and large corporations across the country are sourcing the workers they need and are paying generously to do so. All of the latest data and reports support the fact that the recruitment industry and in particular the IT and computing industry, has been the driving force behind the UK s labour market recovery. The tech industry accounted for 12.8% of permanent jobs found in 2013/2014, and 9.9% of temporary and contract work found during the same period. The IT recruitment market is one of the main reasons why unemployment is now falling at an unprecedented rate, while employment continues to surge to new highs. The IT sector is flourishing right now with the amount of IT contract jobs reaching numbers not seen since before the recession. Accountancy firm Nixon Williams states, 143,450 IT enterprises sourced talented temporary and permanent IT techies last year, which represents a 7.4% rise from The research also revealed that the number of IT jobs jumped to 459,000 last year, a 13% increase from the 403,000 roles in The uptick of 13.9% is significantly higher than the 3.1% rise in the number of jobs across the whole of the UK economy. Conversely, the financial services industry, which has historically competed with IT for skilled candidates, saw its stock plummet from 1.2 million to just 986,000 over the last year. Talent that might have previously worked within financial services are now just as likely to be gravitating towards one of the 15,000 technology companies that were created in the UK last year a testimony to the steady growth in the UK economy and confidence the UK remains one of the technology hotbeds of the world. Digital tech accounted for over 30% of vacancies in the capital in 2014 and it is set to expand further this year by an estimated 11%. The trend is not isolated to the capital either, for example, temporary and permanent workers skilled in IT sectors of digital media, gaming and bioscience are set to be in high demand in Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and Cambridge. How refreshing it would be if the UK government made such a bold move. As things stand, the pressure is on companies to build relationships with potential candidates and persuade them of the benefits of working for them, as many skilled professionals are currently able to pick and choose between many potential employers. For those already in employment, the attraction of contract work over fulltime employment has continued to rise. workers in development typically earn two to three times more than they might earn as a permanent member of staff. The requirement for developers is increasing across the board, in all disciplines, including mobile, front and back end development, within both public and private sector organisations. Despite rising demand, employers have remained cautious over the past two to three years, so salaries have not risen dramatically. However, should current conditions remain favourable we believe it is likely to lead to increases over the next 12 months, as companies continue to recruit and retain the right permanent employees. If a business is determined to recruit a permanent developer, they will have to pay a competitive salary as well as offer an exciting and rewarding place of work. Average permanent salaries and average contract Support & Infrastructure This positive utopia crosses both permanent and contractor positions, for differing reasons. In contrast to the previous three or four years, where companies held off recruiting permanent infrastructure staff due to insecurity over budgets, there is now a drive to increase full-time employees, sometimes at the expense of contractors. However, there is no overall reduction of demand as many businesses are investing in new projects and hiring contractors with specialist skills to deliver them. The attributes now required of infrastructure candidates have changed over the last eighteen months; some companies require their permanent employees to be involved in different areas of a business to their contractors - who seem to be more valued for their specific expertise in niche areas such as virtualisation and cloud. Candidates without virtualisation or cloud experience are at a distinct disadvantage as more businesses are virtualising their estates and utilising cloud based technologies. Specialist infrastructure candidates now receive two or three job offers which has in part led to an increase in for contractors and increased salaries for employees. To attract the best talent companies are offering better training opportunities as well as exciting projects to work on. From CIO to Helpdesk Analyst all professionals are expected to be more business facing and to interact with stakeholders in such a way that they can understand, rather than speaking in technical jargon. A growing partnership between the business side of a company and its IT infrastructure staff will remain a trend throughout the coming months and year. The shift to re-integrate formerly offshored facilities into the UK has come from some dissatisfaction with the performance of overseas shared service centres and difficulties with language barriers. The ITIL framework has now become an industry standard. For employees, this presents an opportunity to become more involved in business decision making and to push IT infrastructure forward as a business driver, as well as presenting an opportunity to develop a career. Big data is certainly adding to the growth of project management & business analysis demand, as more and more companies seek to monetise the masses of data they have acquired and look to become more efficient by tracking customer spending behaviour and how they use systems. With this trend set to continue, project managers & business analysts with big data experience are sure to see increases in their earning capability. We expect to see strong growth in the need for IT project managers & business analysts during 2015, across all sectors. 7 Testing THE DEMAND FOR EXPERIENCED TESTERS PROFICIENT IN AUTOMATED TESTING IS HERE TO STAY AND WE BELIEVE THAT 2015 WILL SEE INCREASED RATES AND SALARIES FOR THOSE WITH A PROVEN SKILLSET. Last year saw a gap between what some clients were prepared to pay and the requirements of those seeking new roles, which lead to a number of projects being under resourced and completed out of scope. Other boosts to the increased demand for testing positions this year will include cloud technology, security and mobile projects all of which require uncompromising and essential testing. The continued adoption of mobile banking, gaming and m-commerce in general will ensure that the pipeline of projects that require testing professionals will remain strong in particular security & performance testers and mobile functionality testers will be highly sought. Although demand for both permanent and contract resource has increased, there has been a slight emphasis on fulltime hires, as more companies look to incorporate a testing function into their corporate project lifecycle. As opposed to testing at the end of the cycle it is now more common to test throughout the cycle and this has seen the rise of the term test driven development (TDD). The other factor for the increased need for fulltime hires has been generated from the ever-growing number of technology start-ups relatively small companies with less than 100 employees will now typically employ testers rather than contractors to ensure that their product or website are constantly available. Software testing is set to grow significantly during 2015 and as companies seek to reduce their overheads, open source technology is gaining in popularity even amongst corporate multinationals this has meant software testers have had to adapt to keep pace with the demands whilst maintain high levels of security and availability. This coupled with the continued use of contract resource for quick results and niche project delivery means 2015 is set to be a good year for professional contractors in this field. Although the need for skilled database, BI and big data resource spans most industry sectors, it will be the following sectors that will recruit the largest number; banking & financial services, e-commerce, energy, insurance and scientific. With competition for the best talent increasing to a level not seen prior to the recession we are sure that database, BI and big data professionals will enjoy 2015 for the rich diversity of projects being offered as well as the increased salaries and. One word of caution for this sector is that there still seems to be a shortage of new talent to the market. Whereas other skillsets are viewed as exciting and cutting edge to young professionals, there is still a disparity between the required levels of resource and those willing to enter into the database, BI and big data profession. The requirement for CIOs, programme directors, heads of business intelligence and enterprise architects is reaching an all-time high and this is partly driven by the 15,000 new IT companies that were created in the UK last year.
