In addition to keeping the public informed through coverage of city and county government, The Transylvania Times also covers some of the county s most remote areas through its dedicated group of community correspondents. Weekly features such as Church News, School News, Sports, Arts and Entertainment, and Senior Citizens News help cover the many aspects of this diverse and growing community. And the paper s extensive Opinions of the Readers section is truly THE public forum for county residents. Furthermore, The Transylvania Times has funded and supported countless community improvement initiatives, making it far more than an objective record of the day s events: it is the voice of Transylvania County. 3 BACKGROUND Transylvania Times History For more than a hundred years, The Transylvania Times has been dedicated to providing in-depth news coverage of Transylvania County. It all began in the summer of 1887 when E.S Warrack, a printer by trade, moved west from Wilmington, N.C. He bought and pieced together presses, paper, ink and other equipment in order to publish on July 1, 1887, the first edition of The Transylvania Pioneer, the first newspaper in Transylvania County. The name was appropriate because the county was wild in those days. Outlaws almost outnumbered the law-abiding citizens. Warrack started an editorial crusade against what he called a gang of hoodlums. The bunch apparently liked the handle for they started calling themselves The Hoodlums, but they did not care for Warrack. One night in mid-january of 1888, they broke into the Pioneer s offices and dumped the presses, type and everything else out of the window onto the street below. Within that year, a Georgian named W. W. Lanier came to town and began another weekly called The French Broad Voice. Through the years, there has always been a community newspaper serving Transylvania County. The name of the publication, the publishers and editors have changed. At one time there was The French Broad Hustler. In 1895, The Sylvan Valley News began. Ora Jones, the first person to write about the history of the county, purchased the paper in Jones' history book had one chapter called Outlaws, Bushwackers and Scalawags, filled with the names of local people. An attorney told Jones that he wouldn t live long enough to answer all of the libel suits. The Times has been able to serialize the book in the paper, including the dynamite chapter! Jones sold the paper in 1916 to Nowell Hollowell who changed the name to The Brevard News, but that was not to continue. Charles Douglas bought it in 1931 and changed the name to The Transylvania Times. The paper was purchased in 1941 by Ed M. Anderson. It has been in the Anderson family ever since and today is published by Stella Anderson Trapp. The Transylvania Times is one of the few remaining independently owned newspapers in the country and has distinguished itself by winning both state and national awards with continual circulation growth. The paper has strong loyalty from its readers and provides profitable results for its advertisers. pg 2

6 ADVERTISING Testimonials SEE WHAT ADVERTISERS ARE SAYING: Beverly Brown, Broker-In-Charge, Prudential Beacon Realty We have gotten very positive response from the advertising that we ve done in The Transylvania Times. We advertise homes and property for sale, and it appears to us that the majority of the people in Transylvania County, and also people who are looking to move here, are reading the paper and calling us about our ads. We really don t get that kind of response from the other area newspapers. Obviously, The Transylvania Times is read, and people look at the ads that are in there. Mary Kathryn Fisher, Broker-In-Charge, Fisher Realty We are always pleased with the response that we get to our Transylvania Times ads. Often we realize how many out-of-town subscribers there are. We always have a positive response, both from out-of-town folks and from local people. Many of our sales can be directly attributed to our ads in The Transylvania Times. Johnny Cantrell, General Sales Manager, Egolf of Brevard In a nutshell, we are part of the local community, we want the majority of our customers to be local customers, and we find that The Transylvania Times is the way to do it. We usually run a quarter-page or half-page ad, with pictures, descriptions, prices and monthly payments. I try to put enough information in there so that it answers a lot of questions for customers before they ever walk in the door. And we know it's working because we have people coming into the dealership carrying those ads, saying, I want to see this car; I want to see this truck. We've advertised in the regional papers and shopper's guides, and we'll get the occasional person from Mars Hill and Asheville. But the local buyers are really our target customers, and I think The Transylvania Times is the best way to reach people here in town. Mike Zerressen, Owner/Broker, Century 21 Mountain Lifestyles The number one reason that we continue to use The Transylvania Times is that a lot of our clients are from out of town, and we notice that many of them pick up the local paper when they visit Brevard, and that's when they see our ads and call us. And we also get a good response from the local community because it's the main source of news for the county. In a nutshell, we get a good response from both visitors and locals. Tim Prey, Director of Advertising, Rice Furniture Company Rice Furniture has been faithfully using The Transylvania Times for 39 years, ever since Rice Furniture was founded in The Transylvania Times has been an instrumental part of our business, since it allows us to reach customers throughout the region, and allows us to advertise the changes within our business. The advertising staff isn't pushy and has always been willing to help us create an ad to fit our particular needs. We also like how they do specialty advertising for the community for events such as graduation, festivals, community guides, and sports events. Over the years we have grown from just selling furniture,to now including cabinets and flooring products, and having two store locations. Those changes can attributed in part to our relationship with The Transylvania Times, as it has allowed us to advertise all the exciting things Rice Furniture has to offer, at a reasonable advertising expense. Transylvania Community Hospital Transylvania Community Hospital uses the Transylvania Times because of reader loyalty. It s the most comprehensive local news of any medium that s what readers want - and that s what they get. They read it from cover to cover. pg 5

PDF files are created when a file is saved as a PostScript file then "distilled" or converted to a PDF file using Adobe's Acrobat Distiller. The PDF Components A PDF document contains the following components: A view file that displays the page or ad as you created it. Embedded Type 1 PostScript fonts. Graphic objects, such as logos or artwork. The latest versions of many desktop publishing programs allow you to create a PDF file from within the application. Other programs, such as older versions of Quark XPress, do not have this feature available. Creating a PDF file when it is not a built in option, is a two-step process requiring Acrobat Distiller. STEP ONE: Creating the PostScript File Start your application and open the document. Choose File > Print. Select Acrobat Distiller from the printer list and click OK. Enter a path name and file name for the PostScript file, using.ps as the file extension, select All Files from the Save As menu, and click OK. Note: Some applications insist on using a.prn extension instead of.ps. If this happens, you should rename the file with a.ps extension to allow Distiller to recognize and process the file. STEP TWO: Distilling the PostScript File on MacIntosh or Windows Distiller Settings Open Acrobat Distiller and make sure it is set up to produce a PDF optimized for Transylvania Times workflow. Go to Settings>Job Options. Select the General tab and set compatibility with Acrobat 8.0 and a resolution of 200 dpi. Click on the Compression tab. Enter the appropriate resolution settings: Color: 200 dpi Grayscale: 200 dpi Monochrome: 600 dpi Use pulldowns to select JPEG compression and High quality. Check the Compress Text and Line Art option and make sure ALL of the check-boxes are selected (checked)! Otherwise your settings will not be applied. Click on the Fonts tab. Make sure that only the first checkbox is selected (Embed All Fonts). This is how you enure that your typefaces get transferred with the document. Select the Color tab. In the Conversion window, Leave Color Unchanged should be checked. In the Options section, the top three should be checked, but not the bottom one. Click Save As and name this set of options, TTimes Print Optimized. Click Save and then click OK on the next screen. Produce Your PDF The Distiller window will now show your new Options file as the default. Locate the PostScript file you exported from PageMaker or QuarkXpress and drag it into the distiller window. Distiller will automatically produce a new file in the same folder as the original PostScript file and with the same name, but ending in.pdf instead of.ps. Check Your PDF Make sure there were no error messages received when distilling the file. Open your newly created.pdf file in Adobe Acrobat on a different computer as a final confirmation. pg 15
