Introduction to community energy Will Dawson

Community Energy Generating Owning Saving & Managing Electricity: solar PV, wind turbines, hydro, etc. Heat: solar thermal, biomass boilers, etc. Community share offers Shared ownership Increasing efficiency Balancing supply & demand Tackling fuel poverty For the benefit of all in the community

Community Energy in the UK Community energy can play a key role in the UK transition to a low-carbon energy future. With the right support, UK communities could be generating at least 3GW of renewable electricity by 2020, a 50-fold increase on today, replacing three coal-fired stations.

Benefits of community energy Re-connects people with how energy is generated & how they consume it Communities reach and are trusted by the most vulnerable in society to help reduce their bills Develop renewables projects in ways and places that are more supported by the wider community Keeps the profits generated within the community; jobs and social spend Much more positive media coverage than commercial energy developers and companies public acceptance of renewable energy, pylons, and energy saving overall schemes

Community Energy Fortnight 2014 Over 100 events across the UK, from the Outer Hebrides to the depths of Cornwall Tours of wind farms, build your own solar panel, share offer launches Running until Sunday 28 th September

Co-operative Energy Ramsay Dunning

Fanning the Energy Revolution Ramsay Dunning, General Manager

Big picture GHG levels reached record high in 2013 (World Meteorological Organisation) CO2 in the atmosphere has reached 396ppm 42% higher than pre-industrial levels But leading NGOs say are strong reasons for optimism over the success of a UN climate change deal next year World needs to find $1,000 billion a year of clean energy investment if to avoid runaway climate change Last year, $254 billion was found globally down a fifth on 2011 s record $318 billion of investment Europe seen a fall-off in finance: in 2013, investment in clean energy slumped by 41% to $58 billion UK was one of the more positive areas of Europe last year But then, UK is well behind most European countries: just 5% of energy is renewable - the only two nations we better are Luxembourg and Malta Need to tap new sources of clean energy finance

Need to Unlock Finance Can t rely on Big Six energy providers or mainstream banks to drive change too wedded to large fossil fuel assets Pensions & investment funds will be increasingly important, but in key locales a combination of community energy and crowdfunding has been key additional part of the answer Quarter of Germany s electricity is from renewables, and one reason for this is that nearly half of renewable energy capacity owned by individuals, community groups and private developers. Tens of billions of euros have been leveraged to produce a community energy revolution In Denmark, 30% of power consumption from renewables in 2013 (some days >100% of demand) - a contributing factor is requirement for wind developers to offer at least 20% of a project to local investors More detail in Community Energy: Unlocking Finance and Investment supported by Co-operative Energy

Changing energy landscape in UK (at last) UK, Supply - Big Six 99.8% of market five years ago, now 93.4%. (Cornwall Energy) In June, Ofgem referred the sector to the Competition and Markets Authority UK, Renewable Electricity Generation share of total electricity generation more than doubled over last five years, up from 6.7% in 2009 to 13.9% in (DECC). UK, Independent Renewable Generation - seeing significant growth, now 2,930 projects over 50kw capacity (>6,200MW), up 40% in (SmartestEnergy) Community Energy growing but still small cf likes of Denmark and Germany - 66 community projects over 50kw, amounting to 166MW. (SmartestEnergy) Community Energy needs a leg up

Co-operative Energy s support for Renewables In 2011, Midcounties Co-operative launched Cooperative Energy to supply electricity and gas across England, Scotland and Wales. From the outset we pledged that the carbon content of our electricity would remain less than half the national average. Exceeded this pledge every year by some degree 2011: 100% renewable 2012: 54% renewable 2013: 68% renewable Whilst growing our business rapidly to over 200,000 customers. More detail in Midcounties Social Responsibility Report

Co-operative Energy s support for Community Energy From the outset, we have actively sought to source power from community generation initiatives Via Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) we provide a secure market for community energy, and now have 15 agreements with community groups Uniquely, we offer a User Chooser facility that allows customers to control the energy mix of the electricity they buy. Customers visit our Energy Hub website, register and then choose the generation type they prefer and, if relevant, the specific generation site to be utilised e.g., community wind farms in Cumbria and Cambridgeshire, hydro-electric co-ops at Whitby Esk and Neen Sollars or solar installations in Somerset and Gloucester No premium for 100% renewable community energy of choice User Chooser

Co-operative Energy Lobbying for Good It s not enough to get our own house in order Need to encourage system change especially when the rules rigged against small, independent suppliers and generators We ve engaged extensively with policy makers and lobbied hard for a more supportive regime for community energy as described in Midcounties Social Responsibility Report. Working with Co-operatives UK, Community Energy Coalition, ResPublica, Social Economy Alliance, Co-operative Party, Co-operatives Europe and others Recent engagements include: Community Renewables Economy; The Potential of Renewable Energy; Unlocking Finance and Investment; Lesson from Germany the latter has been distributed to not only every MP and Peer, but also members of the Welsh Assembly, Scottish Parliament and UK MEPs. And, delighted to sponsor Community Energy Fortnight, 2014

How business can pitch in Buy renewable energy community energy Invest directly - Midcounties Co-operative invested in Westmill Wind Farm years before established Co-operative Energy indirectly support crowdfunding initiatives, such as Abundance Engage Join Community Energy Coalition Get involved in Community Energy fortnight Lobby for Good As Exec Director of UNFCC, Christiana Figueres notes, progressive voices still outgunned and outfinanced by fossil fuel lobbying.
