I. Course Descrip,on In this compara.ve and integra.ve study of the mul.cultural musical styles of the United States, we use a travel metaphor to frame our explora.on of the musics of Na.ve Americans, European Americans, African Americans, Hispanic/La.no Americans, and Asian Americans from their historical roots to the present. 3 20. Toward the Future Student Learning Goals/Outcomes This course is a General Educa.on course that enrolls students with a wide range of backgrounds and abili.es. We are commiaed to helping all students succeed, and have worked hard to develop a learner- centered course designed to help you and us monitor and improve your learning. By the end of this course, if you are a successful learner, you will: 1. Founda'onal Knowledge: demonstrate detailed knowledge regarding the structural characteris.cs, stylis.c categories, key musicians, and historical context of a variety of American music genres. Recall the key elements that shaped the historical context and assimila.on experience of five broad cons.tuent groups: Na.ve Americans, European Americans, African Americans, Hispanic/La.no Americans, and Asian Americans. Iden.fy how American music genres reflect the root music tradi.ons of the cons.tuent group and the historical context in which the genre developed. Recognize American music genres in terms of their structural characteris.cs, stylis.c categories, and key musicians. 2. Applica'on: be able to dis.nguish between American music genres by applying knowledge of structural characteris.cs, stylis.c traits, and performance aaributes. 3. Human Dimension: be able to discuss, with insight and understanding, the mul.cultural context and the social and personal implica.ons of American music genres. 4. Metacogni'on: demonstrate self- managed learning in a comprehensive journal, in which you reflect upon, evaluate, and describe your own learning process. II. Communica,on Ques'ons or Comments You Have for Us: We want you to get answers to your ques.ons as soon as possible, so please first check the ETUDES site s leh menu bar Ques0ons? (also linked at the top of this syllabus) as most ques.ons will be answered there. If not, ask us by going to Private Messages, click New Private Message and choose - Course Professors at the top of the To User list. You can generally expect a response within 24 hours. Because e- mail is unreliable due to the college s spamming filters, use e- mail only in emergency because you are unable to use the website. Informa'on We Have for You: We use Private Messages, Announcements, and Instructor Comments on your assignments to communicate informa.on to you. Make sure in 3

Discussions and Private Messages/My Profile/Preferences you have selected to be no.fied by e- mail when a Private Message is sent to you. Announcements will be at the course home page when you log in. You are responsible for the informa.on we post in the course announcements or send to you as a private message, so for your own benefit, read them. On Campus Drop In : One of the members of the Instruc.onal Team will be available on T/Th between 11:10-11:40 and 1:10-1:40 in Room 1401 for drop in during our Differen.ated Classroom por.on of the on campus sec.ons to help you with any aspect of the course, especially working on the Digital Textbook. Office Hours: This course is taught by an instruc.onal team, so office hours vary. Fall quarter is excep.onal in that Professor Carey is in England with Campus Abroad. If you need to see someone in person, Dr. Hartwell will be available during the following hours: Dr. Hartwell (Office 1406) on M/W 8:45-9:45 and T/Th 2:00-3:00. Ques'ons on General College MaGers: If you have ques.ons of the college (e.g., Pass/No Pass, enrollment status, etc.) we suggest that the most efficient way to contact a representa.ve is through haps://foothill.helpdeskconnect.com/. This is a site dedicated to online students, and we have been told it is quicker than phone calls. III. Textbook This course requires a digital textbook, Crossroads: The Music of American Cultures, Elizabeth F. Barkley, Ph.D. (Kendall Hunt, 2013) ISBN The digital textbook is an integrated learning environment that includes both reading and laboratory assessments as well as listening examples provided through a 4- month subscrip.on to Rhapsody.com, a digital music library. (Rhapsody.com is available only in the U.S.; if you are taking this course outside of this country, contact Dr. Barkley prior to the end of Week 1 to discuss and evaluate your op.ons.) Because the earlier textbook (Crossroads: The Musics of Mul0cultural America, 2007, published by Pren.ce Hall) is no longer acceptable for course ar.cula.on and it does not have the listening examples, lab, or assessments, it will not work as a subs.tute. A Digital Textbook Access Card/Code can be ordered in two ways: 1) through GreenRiver Webcom at hap:// (fastest and easiest) or 2) the Foothill Bookstore (best if you are on campus or need a physical access card). Please see the aaached PDF: Digital Textbook:Rhapsody Registra.on Guide.pdf for details on how to purchase and register your textbook/rhapsody access codes. A 4- month Rhapsody subscrip.on comes with the textbook, but you need to register your code - see instruc.ons on page 10 in the PDF Guide. 4

For your own protec'on, purchase the access card only through one of the two ways iden'fied above and keep a copy or screen shot of your receipt. If you purchase an access code from anywhere other than one of these three ways, you are unfortunately solely responsible for it working properly. Problems With the Textbook or Rhapsody We can help you only if you follow these procedures, as these are the steps required to provide us with the necessary documenta.on: Textbook: 1) take a screen shot showing the error and then 2) call websupport at and 3) e- mail websupport@kendallhunt.com with a copy to barkleyelizabeth@foothill.edu aaaching the screen shot showing the error and informing them that you are enrolled at Foothill College and that the textbook is Crossroads: The Music of American Cultures. Rhapsody: 1) take a screen shot showing the error and then 2) contact rhapsody@kendallhunt.com with a copy to barkleyelizabeth@foothill.edu, aaaching the screen shot showing the error. IV. Grades and Pass/No Pass This course is based on a cumula.ve point system. Earn a minimum of the following points by the end of the quarter for the corresponding leaer grade. (See Learning Ac.vi.es and Assessment below for how to earn points.) 5

Keep track of your points in the ETUDES website s Gradebook. Points earned from the Digital Textbook quizzes will be transferred to the ETUDES site aher the Part Level deadline. (Keep track of these on the Digital Textbook Gradebook.) You are responsible for communica.ng to us and resolving any problems regarding grades within 1 week aher your work has been graded. Any ques.ons regarding your final course grade must be resolved by 8 a.m. the morning aher final course grades are posted. As soon as you earn the points for the grade you wish, you are finished and need only to take the Learning Outcomes exit survey and double- check the Gradebook when the Final Grades are Posted announcement is sent. Pass/No Pass: Most students take this course for a leaer grade. If you wish instead to take the course Pass/No Pass, you need only the number of points required for a C but you must file at the beginning of the quarter with Admissions and Records. See the Admissions and Records page hap:// for details or download the form available at hap:// nopass.pdf. Keep a copy of the transmission for your records and if you have any ques.ons, e- mail webreg@foothill.edu. Instructors are not involved in this process. At the end of the term we submit leaer grades. Don t worry when you see a C or higher as a final grade in the Gradebook at the end of the term, Admissions will change it to a P on your official transcript. V. Learning Ac,vi,es and Assessment for Online Classes This course is taught both online and onsite, each with different requirements although both use the same digital textbook and ETUDES course website. You are in online if your sec.on number ends with a W (such as Music 8.03W) and in onsite if your sec.on ends with a Y and is assigned a day/.me (such as Music 8.02Y, T/Th 10-11:50). You can request to change delivery methods by sending a Private Message to Course Professors by noon on Wednesday of the first week of the quarter so that we can provide you with the appropriate add code. (Honors Ins.tute is only onsite.) First Steps 1. Make sure you have set up your computer for ETUDES NG system requirements as specified on the ETUDES portal: haps://myetudes.org/portal. 2. Read through the Syllabus and then claim the Course Policy and Procedures bonus in Assignments, Tests, and Surveys (ATS) and any other bonuses you hope to earn. 3. Make sure you have purchased/registered the digital textbook and begin work on Chapter 1 (see Online Ac.vi.es below). 6

Online Ac,vi,es This course and the digital textbook are organized into 4 Parts, with each Part subdivided into Chapters. Within each chapter, there are 7 learning ac.vi.es: 1. Reflect: In your Travel Journal, reflect on what you already know about that chapter s topic. (Instruc0ons, Grading Criteria, and Submission in ETUDES Assignments, Tests and Surveys; Reflec0ons 1 and 7 combined are 20 poten0al points per chapter.) 2. Read: On the Digital Textbook, read the series of pages that comprise the narra.ve por.on of the chapter. 3. Apply (Lab): Read the Lab and listen to the music examples on the chapter s lab Rhapsody Playlist. Keep track of your answers to Lab ques.ons in order to score high on the Lab Quiz assessment you will find in 5. Assess. 4. Review: Go through the flashcards to check your recall and understanding of basic vocabulary and concepts. 5. Assess: Take the Reading Quiz and the Lab Quiz. (All quizzes are in the Digital Textbook, are objec0ve, automa0cally graded and earn a poten0al of 60 for the Reading and 40 for the Lab; thus a combined 100 per chapter.) 6. Share: Post your response to the prompt for this chapter on the ETUDES Discussion Forum. (Each chapter pos0ng earns a poten0al 20 points; see Ques0ons? for grading criteria.) 7. Reflect: In your Travel Journal (in ETUDES Assignments, Tests and Surveys), reflect on what you learned in this chapter. (Instruc0ons, Grading Criteria, and Submission in ETUDES Assignments, Tests and Surveys; Reflec0ons 1 and 7 combined are 20 poten0al points per chapter.) The chart below displays the ac.vi.es along with poten.al points. 7

Final Exam The final exam is online, comprehensive, organized around the four learning outcomes, and available for the 2- hour block of your choice during a 1- week period that ends at 1:00 PM on Tuesday of Final Exam Week. Doing well on the exam earns up to 200 points; failing it earns a point penalty. If you reach the point threshold for the final course grade that you want through the other course ac.vi.es, you are not required to take the final exam. See Final Exam instruc.ons in Assignments, Tests and Surveys for specifics. Poten'al Bonuses: We offer several bonuses; please see instruc.ons in ETUDES Assignments, Tests and Surveys for specifics. Poten'al Penal'es: This course is based on a posi.ve system where your ac.ons generate points, but to preserve educa.onal integrity, there are also poten.al penal.es. 1. Processing Fee (10-20 per item) : This is for when we have to do addi.onal work that should have been done by you (e.g., copying and pas.ng a Travel Journal into the Assignment for you, copying and pas.ng your e- mail message into Private Messages for you). 2. Incomplete Assignments (- 50 to ): We are commiaed to honoring the official Course Outline of Record (COR) that is the basis for our ar.cula.on agreement with transfer ins.tu.ons and the State of California. Although you are not required to do all the chapters, you are required to do the Travel Journal, Read and Apply/Lab Quizzes, and Discussion ac.vi.es for the chapters you choose to do. Therefore we will impose a - 50 point penalty per Part level if a significant number of the chapters you chose to do are incomplete (a chapter is incomplete if you do not complete that chapter s Travel Journal, Read and Apply/Lab Quizzes, and Discussion pos.ng.) If you do no work in the digital textbook by the end of the quarter, you have not met the basic assignment requirements and will receive a point penalty: 9

3. Junk Effort or Misconduct (Up to ): One of the main reasons you are in college should be because you want to become beaer educated. We cannot make you learn, you have to decide that yourself. Examples of junk effort include Ignoring basic course or assignment instruc.ons, puung liale or no college- level thought into the course or assignment, and submiung assignments or communica.ng with us with excessive grammar and spelling errors. These behaviors demonstrate a lack of commitment to learning and will result in a point penalty ranging from loss of poten.al points to We also reserve the right to impose a more significant penalty and/or report you to the Dean of Students if we believe your ac.ons are seriously undermining the learning of other students as iden.fied in the Foothill- DeAnza District Student Conduct, Discipline & Due Process document ( Academic Integrity In this course, we strive to create a learning environment that is posi.ve, suppor.ve, and based on mutual trust. We assume that all students will pursue their studies with integrity and honesty. To preserve our student- centered approach and to honor the efforts of the vast majority of students who put in the.me and effort to earn their grades honestly, we have zero tolerance for dishonesty. Please make sure you understand what academic integrity means by reviewing the aaached document that is distributed on campus and is popularly known as the Z- Card prior to claiming the Course Policies bonus: Academic Integrity at Foothill College.pdf Also, for your own protec.on, never give your ETUDES login informa.on to others, and be sure to log off when you are done (especially on public computers). Finally, if you believe you may have submiaed something that would be considered dishonest and you inform us before we submit it to Turni.n, let us know immediately and we ll delete it so that you can submit honest work. Academic Integrity Viola.on (Up to ): Students who commit dishonesty are reported to the Dean of Students and the Dean of Fine Arts and Communica.ons; lose all bonuses; lose the opportunity to earn points at the Part Level for that assignment, and earn a point penalty posted on the assignment at one of the following three levels: Minor to Standard Viola,on ( points): This is for situa.ons where most of the assignment is honestly done but there is s.ll a viola.on of the college s academic integrity policy. Substan,al Viola,on (- 400 points) This is for significant plagiarism/chea.ng where a substan.al amount of the material has been copied OR it is a clear aaempt to earn credit through fraudulent means. This is also the level at which Honors Ins.tute students are prosecuted for any academic integrity 10

viola.on, as by defini.on, Honors Ins.tute students are held to a higher standard than regular students. Second Offense (- 600 points) This is the penalty for each addi.onal offense. If the student responds in a 0mely manner, clearly acknowledges his or her mistake in the first response without making excuses, and accepts responsibility with maturity and dignity, we will reduce the point penalty up to 100 points. Further push back with either members of the Instruc0onal Team or the Dean of Students will demonstrate that the student has not learned from the experience and will result in an increased penalty. VI. Schedule and Deadlines The easiest place to monitor the schedule and deadlines is CourseMap (the link at the top of the ETUDES menu) although you can also see most of them in ETUDES Assignments, Tests and Surveys (ATS). To provide you with maximum flexibility, everything but the Learning Outcomes Survey is available the first day of the quarter. You are encouraged to work at your own pace. Some students choose to work hard at the beginning of the course to finish early. Others work at a moderate pace, distribu.ng their work evenly throughout the quarter. Manage your.me intelligently so that you aren t pushing close to the deadlines when intense ac.vity on the site can cause you technical problems and lots of frustra.on. Make- Up Policy: We do not accept late submissions, so please don t even ask us for an extension, as it will just look like you didn t read the syllabus - and of course then we think, if you didn t read the syllabus, why did you claim the Course Policies bonus? :- ) If you miss a deadline, compensate by doing the other available ac.vi.es. As you can see from the Assignments with Poten.al Points grid above, there are many points beyond what are needed for a final course grade of A. GeWng Dropped/Withdrawing If you have 0 points by Friday at 8 AM of Week 2 you have not aaended in.me for the first census and we are required to drop you. If you decide to drop this course, you are required to officially withdraw through the Foothill Admissions and Registra.on Office. You can find out how to do this at hap:// If you are s.ll enrolled in the course at the end of the quarter, you will be assigned the final grade corresponding to whatever points you have earned. It is illegal and unethical for us to back date your withdrawal date to save you from geung a W or an F. Sorry) 11

College Deadlines Below is a table taken from the Foothill website that shows useful college deadlines: VII. Students With Disabili,es If you have a learning disability or physical challenge, we want to provide you with any assistance you need to achieve your academic goals. This course is student- centered, flexible and appropriate for students with learning disabili.es, although students are required to manage their.me efficiently within the deadlines. Most students with disabili.es are successful without special accommoda.on, but Foothill College has an on- campus lab with talking computers, print enlargers, tac.le maps of the campus, and other alternate learning op.ons. In addi.on, an e- reader of the textbook has been created to help students in this course. To obtain disability- related accommoda.ons, students must contact Disability Resource Center (DRC) as early as possible in the quarter. To contact DRC, you may: Visit DRC in Room 5801 (near Lot 5) DRC at adap.velearningdrc@foothill.edu Call DRC at to make an appointment 12
