3 A lot has happened since our venerable ancestors the bacteria appeared on earth. The giant tyrants, the dinosaurs have disappeared. The little survivors turned into humans, discovered fire, tools, the calendar, the Universe, tears, and recently about 40,000 years ago god s daughter: music. Her empire stretched beyond the horizon. It was in the waves of the sea, in the vibration of the leaves falling in autumn, in the songs of the wind, the gallop of a horseman into the unknown or the earthquake announcing the end of time. And when music really ruled, it could not be associated with anything but the most sublime, mysterious emotions. Ultimately, it was and still is the highest necessity for the human soul. The fools, the naïve, the lovers, the poets, the mathematicians and the minstrels are her willing servants. Leonardo complained that she is the minor sister of the arts, she goes away after an instant and disappears for ever. I think she fades to a place where she likes to hide, but is ready to be reborn. Each time the same and different. In the St. Matthew Passion, in Tchaikovsky s sounds of impossible love between Romeo and Juliet, in Schubert s Erlkönig. In the birth of Venus, in the vain efforts of Don Quixote or the sublime Swan of Tuonela. And she disappears thereafter like ripples on the surface after a flower has been thrown onto water. Do not miss it, for it will never happen again in the same way under the same stars. Among the guests were Fritz Kreisler, Edgard Varèse, Béla Bartók and George Gershwin. This version lacked the Offertoire and Libera me, which Fauré added at some time in the following decade. The Libera me predates the rest of the Requiem, having been composed eleven years earlier as a baritone solo. The forces required for the original 1888 version were a choir about 20 in number consisting of boys and men (the Madeleine did not admit female choristers), solo boy treble, harp, timpani, organ, strings (solo violin, divided violas, divided cellos and basses).

19 Friday LANTERNA MAGICA The Partner for this day is the OP-Pohjola Group Kuhmo Arts Centre 17/13 Lasse Hallström Casanova s Venice Lasse Hallström is a leading film maker, but in his musical choices he really exceeds all expectations. Following in the shadowy steps of the abominable Giacomo Girolamo Casanova he deploys an encyclopaedic knowledge of Venetian Baroque music and makes an impeccable selection of masterpieces. I suppose Casanova could even have heard all those exquisite compositions at first hand (performed on authentic instruments), had he not been too busy with other aspects of life... When the beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet receives a life-changing diagnosis, the group s future suddenly hangs in the balance: suppressed emotions, competing egos, and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and the existence of the quartet. 30 Sunday Music for different Tsars Kuhmo Arts Centre 17/13 Tsarskoye Selo R ussia was a late starter in developing a native tradition of classical music due to the proscription by the Church against secular music. Beginning in the reign of Ivan IV, the Imperial Court invited Western composers and musicians to fill this void. By the time of Peter I, these artists were a regular fixture at Court. While not personally inclined toward music, Peter saw European music as a mark of civilisation and a way of Westernising the country; his establishment of the Western-style city of Saint Petersburg helped foster its spread to the rest of the upper classes. A craze for Italian opera at Court during the reigns of Empresses Elizabeth and Catherine also helped spread interest in Western music among the aristocracy. This craze became so pervasive that many were not even aware that Russian composers existed...
