RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2012 Present Assistant Professor, Columbia University, School of Social Work Research Scientist, Providence Health Systems, Center for Outcomes Research and Education (CORE), Portland, OR. Co-Investigator on the Oregon Health Study (OHS) also known as the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment, the first randomized trial examining the impacts of a health insurance expansion on uninsured adults. Primary data collection included fielding two waves of 70,000 mail surveys and conducting over 13,000 in-person interviews with biomarker screenings. Secondary data collection included obtaining datasets for hospital discharges, emergency department visits, credit reports, mortality, and DHS program participation for our sample. Specialized expertise was developed in using Dried Blood Spots in community-based health research, and tracking protocols for longitudinal research with mobile populations. The OHS is generously funded by the National Institute on Aging, MacArthur Foundation, California Health Care Foundation, Sloan Foundation, Smith-Richardson Foundation, Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Principal Investigator on the qualitative arm of the Oregon Health Study, managing a team of interviewers, analysts, and a field supervisor to conduct unstructured qualitative interviews with subpopulations of interest in the Oregon Health Study (eg. Spanish-speakers who won the insurance lottery but did not apply to the program). Over 750 interviews were obtained over the course of eight months. Principal Investigator on the Oregon Healthy Kids Evaluation, a multi-year mail survey designed to evaluate the impact of a SCHIP health insurance expansion to uninsured children, Funded by the Oregon Health Authority. Co-investigator on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant: Beyond Insurance: Understanding the Interplay between Medicaid, the Built Environment, and Health. This social determinants of health study collects primary observational data on neighborhood characteristics utilizing the Active
2 Neighborhood Checklist. We developed an ipad application for primary neighborhood data collection with integrated mapping capabilities. Observational data will be aggregated with GIS city- planning data and OHS biomarker data. Co-investigator on the American Cancer Society Grant: The Impact of Insurance on Cancer Care: A Randomized Controlled Trial. This project examines preventative cancer screenings and post-cancer treatment follow-up in an uninsured population signed up for a health insurance lottery through the state of Oregon. Co-Principal Investigator on the Providence Health & Services Foundation Grant: Alzheimer, Dementia, and Related-Disorders Notebook Project. This is a mixed-method evaluation of a caregiver notebook for families with a diagnosis of Alzheimer, Dementia or related disorders. Methods include focus groups with providers, a longitudinal mail survey, and follow-up qualitative interviews with caregivers. Co-investigator on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant: Moderating the Health Effects of Childhood Trauma in Low-Income Adults: ACE Scores & the Oregon Health Study. This project examines the relationship between early childhood trauma and adult health outcomes in vulnerable populations, with health insurance as a potential moderating factor. Data collection involves a followup mail survey with individuals who participated in the biomarker arm of the OHS Co-investigator, Oregon Health & Sciences University, Portland, OR. A qualitative approach to understanding the effects of OHP coverage loss on patients seeking care in the Emergency Department. This study examined the experience of individuals who lost health insurance coverage and were subsequently utilizing an Emergency Department for care. POST- MSW PRACTICE EXPERIENCE Medical Social Worker, Oregon Health & Sciences University and Doernbecher Children s Hospital, Portland, OR. Based in the Emergency Department, with after-hours coverage of adult and pediatric ICUs, responsibilities included: psychiatric assessments and discharge planning; trauma patient identification, family notification, and bereavement support; resource brokering for the uninsured and underinsured; domestic violence and child abuse evaluations and safety-planning; and psychosocial assessments Project Respond Crisis Mental Health Counselor (part-time/on-call), Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare, Portland Oregon. Provided on-site crisis response to 911 calls and police requests regarding individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Responsibilities included: psychiatric assessments of suicide risk or dangerousness to self and/or others; follow-up safety planning with hospitals or community resources Child Abuse Specialist (part-time/on-call), CARES Northwest, Legacy Health System, Portland, OR. CARES Northwest provides on-site child-abuse assessments for Legacy Emanuel Emergency Department, the designated ED for child abuse in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties. Responsibilities included: after-hours/weekend emergency department assessments, referrals, and reporting of suspected child abuse and/or neglect Mental Health Therapist, Pacific Gateway Hospital, Portland, OR. In-patient psychiatric care, responsibilities included: individual, family, and group therapy for adolescents on the acute unit; intake assessments and discharge planning.
