1 PNSG 2016: Medical Surgical Nursing II Medication Simulation Laboratory Guidelines Objective: To enhance student medication administration experience by administering multiple medications to multiple patients in a controlled environment. Additionally, this activity will provide an opportunity for the student to enhance time management and organizational skills. Guidelines: The student will receive a list of potential medications that a simulation patient may be prescribed and should review the following information: Classification, Adverse reactions, Contraindications, Affects on lab results, and Patient teaching. These medications are compiled from the Senior Medication List. Student will receive the Physician s Orders and a Medication Administration Record (MAR) once entering the Simulation Laboratory. The orders may contain a variety of medications and routes of administration, dosage calculations may be necessary. Student will be required to know any contraindications, nursing interventions, or therapeutic dosages related to the medication. Student will be required to remove the medications from the Pyxis machine in a timely and efficient manner as described on the Medication Administration List (see attached). Student is then required to administer the medications following the 8 Rights. Failure to adhere to the Medication Simulation Laboratory Guidelines will result in Unsatisfactory Progress (UP) on the Medication Administration List. Faculty will evaluate student performance based on the indicators of the Medication Administration List. Student will provide a self evaluation of performance on the Medication Simulation Laboratory using the Student Self Evaluation (see attached).
