"Creative individuals are remarkable for their ability to adapt to almost any situation and to make do with whatever is at hand to reach their goals. If I had to express in one word what makes their personalities different from others, it's complexity. They show tendencies of thought and action that in most people are segregated. They contain contradictory extremes; instead of being an "individual," each of them is a "multitude." -- Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi Click to view Creative People Are

Mindset the r isk iness of not taking risks.
What s At Stake? The Social-Emotional Needs of the gifted are often both overlooked or misdiagnosed and what may set them apart from their educational peers. depression suicide drop out masking perfectionism imposter syndrome lack resilience
Not All Mistakes Are Created Equal
What s Grit got to do with it?
Mindset moving to Risk Tolerant Classrooms In a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. They don t necessarily think everyone s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it. Carol Dweck, Stanford University
Mindset 5 Confusions 1. What a growth mindset is 2. To foster a growth mindset, simply praise children for working hard 3. Growth mindset is about changing young people, not adults 4. All that matters is what s in the mind 5. Improvement is all about changing beliefs and not doing anything else MindShift, November 16, 2015
Mindset Creativity Ghost Town or Boom Town? In a fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that s that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb. In a growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. 15 Divergent and Convergent Thinking A tale of two minds.
CrEaTiVe PeOpLe...
Rather than starting with knowledge, we start with creating, and eventually discern the knowledge that we need from it. What if we started with creativity rather than principles? We re creating the churn, the friction for the brain, rather than solely focusing on acquiring rote knowledge.
Right Brain Left Brain Myths Can you be both? Actually both sides of the brain are in constant communication. Although parts of the brain are particularly active during certain memory or learning activities, all brain activities requiring cognitive activate neural networks on both sides of the brain. Recent research into how the brain works has found that categorizing people as right- or left-brained is bunk, specifically when it comes to identifying individual ability to create. Everyone uses both sides of their brains to process information. While the right side of the brain remembers the gist of an experience or the big picture, the left side of the brain recalls the details. Complex cognitive functions require the brain regions to work in integrated fashion, shifting between divergent and convergent thinking to combine new information with old and even forgotten knowledge. People may feel more comfortable looking at concepts over minutiae, and vice versa, but the more easily you shift between both sides, the more complex a creative a thinker you can be. Click here to take a test
Debunking the Myth TRY THIS: Make a figure 8 in the air with your finger. Reverse! With your table - discuss other physical activities that require using both sides of your brain? If your left brain is the dominant part of your brain you may have problems thinking in a creative way or in being intuitive while if your right brain was the dominant part you may have problems planning for your life or thinking logically. So while some people seem to be less adept than others at firing up both burners, making them appear more left-brained than right-brained, most brain scientists agree and this is what s exciting that the ability to shift rapidly between divergent and convergent thinking, which is the key to innovation, can be sharpened and improved.
Right Brain Left Brain Workout click to view Some people claim that a Genius is a person who managed to use both his brain hemispheres equally. By combining the power of intuition with logical arguments a person can come up with much better solutions to problems.
Creativity and Innovation Where does it come from and how do I get it? Creativity needs space and time to flourish at school. Creativity is the key to unchaining the minds of our students. In order to do that, we must build four structured creative thinking skills in students: Fluency - Producing a large number of ideas Flexibility - Changing one s way of thinking by producing alternative ideas or categories Elaboration - Expanding on a single idea by adding details, making changes, or crafting complex ideas Originality - Producing unique or novel ideas and responses that are new to oneself through fluency, flexibility, and elaboration...this cannot be taught, it can be fostered by teachers
Creative People Are... Mindful Daydreamers Imaginatively Gritty Passionately Introverted Click to view Can Any School Foster Pure Creativity? Openly Sensitive Playfully Serious Logically Intuitive Vulnerably Resilient Rebellious Experts What do you think is a creative person looks like? Can we foster creativity in school? How?
TRY THIS: SCAMPER!
Sample Questions for Making Modification Using an Object Substitute: What might you use (substitute) or swap to improve the picture/object? Combine: What might you combine with this picture/object? Adapt: How could you adapt or re-adjust this picture or object to serve another purpose? Modify: Can you change the shape, look or feel in picture/object? Put into New Uses: Can this picture/object be used in another way? Eliminate: What can you take away or remove from this picture/object? Rearrange/Reverse: Can you exchange or rearrange something in picture/object? Write a conclusion about modifications and how your picture/object has changed from it s original state.
The Blind Man and the Elephant Once upon a time there was a certain raja who called to his servants and said, Come, good fellow, go and gather together in one place all the men of Savatthi who were born blind...and show them an elephant. Very good, sire, replied the servant, and he did as he was told. He said to the blind men assembled there, Here is an elephant, and to one man he presented the head of the elephant, to another its ears, to another a tusk, to another the trunk, the foot, back, tail, and tuft of the tail, saying to each one that that was the elephant. When the blind men had felt the elephant, the raja went to each of them and said to each, Well blind man, have you seen the elephant? Tell me, what sort of thing is an elephant? Lesson Plan ws/lesson-plans/blind-menand-elephant/
Can you teach and assess creativity? Creativity fosters deeper learning, builds confidence and creates problem solvers across content areas. Creativity Indicators *Synthesize ideas in original and surprising ways. *Ask new questions to build upon an idea. *Brainstorm multiple ideas and solutions to problems. *Communicate ideas in new and innovative ways. What the Heck is Project Based Learning? Click on icon PBL is the act of learning through identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Kids show what they learn as they journey through the unit, not just at the end.

Creativity Is STEM the secret sauce? What might surprise you is that another primary need is the need to be creative! The word creativity is used a lot, but no one is taking the tim e to define it. Creativity is the A for Art in STEAM. So how do we make our children more creative? Researchers have found that play is important for productive thought. Playing with ideas increases learning. Creativity is really the art of m etaphor. Merging two things that we never really link. 31 The Right Stuff 8 Things to Know About Creativity * Creativity combines both originality and task appropriateness. * Classrooms that honor playful exploration and look on mistakes as a potential source of new ideas build students confidence to approach problem solving fearlessly. * The law of 80 percent says that 80 percent of what you teach is who you are. * Producing something creative is a practical skill that every student can and should develop. * Childhood privilege doesn t give a leg up on entrepreneurship and innovation. Research shows that arts and crafts do. *If students are to trust their creative ability, we must teach them to slow down, gather sensory data, notice relationships, and use their imaginations to visualize. * Research show unequivocally that when people are curious about something, they learn more and better. * Creativity is no longer a choice for a select few; it has become an essential quality for all.
