1 CMOS Workshop Instructors 1. Lukas Chrostowski is an Associate Professor at Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Born in Poland, Dr. Chrostowski earned the B.Eng. in electrical engineering from McGill University and the PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California at Berkeley. With current research interests in silicon photonics, optoelectronics, high speed vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) design, fabrication and test, optical communication systems and biophotonics, he has published more than 100 journal and conference publications. Dr. Chrostowski has been serving since 2008 as the co director of the University of British Columbia AMPEL Nanofabrication Facility. He spent his sabbatical at the University of Washington, Seattle, with Prof. Michael Hochberg and the Institute for Photonic Integration / OpSIS foundry service. He is the Program Director of the NSERC CREATE Silicon Electronic Photonic Integrated Circuits (Si EPIC) training program. 2. Glenn Cowan received the B.A.Sc degree from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON in 1999 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, New York, NY in 2001 and 2005, respectively. From 2005 to 2007 he was with the Communications Technology Group at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY where he designed circuits for high speed communication and investigated the effects of process variation on mixed signal circuits. In 2007, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal, QC where he is now an Associate Professor. His research interests include mixed signal circuits for high speed electrical and optical communication, clock generation and distribution, low power radios, and mixed signal computation and signal processing. 3. Masum Hossein completed his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in Prior to that, he received B.Sc. Degree from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and M.Sc. degree from Queen s University, in 2002 and 2005, respectively. He joined the faculty of the University of Alberta Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in winter Before returning to academia, he has spent several years in industrial research. From 2008 to 2010, he was with Gennum Corp. in the Analog and Mixed Signal division where he focused on the development of world s highest capacity and most power efficient cross point router solution. Following that, he joined Rambus Lab as a senior member of technical stuff, and focused on advanced equalization and clock recovery techniques for high speed interfaces. He won the best student paper award at the 2008 IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits (CICC) Conference. He also won Analog Device s outstanding student designer award in 2010.

Shahriar Mirabbasi received B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 1990, and the M.A.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1997 and 2002, respectively. Since August 2002, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada where he is currently a Professor. His research interests include analog, mixed signal, and RF integrated circuit and system design for wireless and wireline data communications applications, silicon photonics, low power integrated transceivers, data converters, and biomedical circuits. 5. Vishal Saxena is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Boise Sate University starting Fall His research interests are in Analog and Mixed Signal circuit and system design. Earlier, he obtained his B. Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in He graduated with his MS and PhD from Boise State University in 2007 and 2010 respectively. In between, he has held senior design position in broadband communication system design in a start up in India, design intern positions in Micron Imaging group (later Aptina) in Boise, ID and Lightwire Inc (now Cisco Systems) in Allentown, PA. During Spring 2010, he was a special lecturer in the ECE department at BSU teaching deltasigma data converter design course. He has been on the organizing committee of the IEEE Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems and active in the local IEEE SSC and signal processing chapters. 6. Sudip Shekhar received the B.Tech. degree (Hons.) in electrical and computer engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in 2003 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2005 and 2008, respectively. He is currently working as a research scientist at Circuits and Systems Research, Intel Corporation, Hillsboro. His research interests include circuits for high speed electrical and optical I/O interfaces, frequency synthesizers, and RF transceivers. Dr. Shekhar is a recipient of the IEEE Solid State Society Predoctoral Fellowship ( ), Intel Foundation Ph.D. Fellowships ( ), Analog Devices Outstanding Student Designer Award (2007), and Transactions of Circuits and Systems Darlington Best Paper Award (2010).
3 CMOS Workshop Invited Speakers 1. Chris Cone has been a Technical Marketing Engineer in Mentor Graphic s Custom IC Design group for over 7 years. Chris began his 18 year career in the IC design industry designing CMOS and BiCMOS standard products for Philips Semiconductors now NXP in Nijmegen Netherlands. Serving in various roles, Chris has worked performed product development in a number of physical interface standards including USB, 1394 and Spacewire LVDS. Chris Cone earned his BSEE and MSEE with emphasis in microelectronics design at the University of New Mexico. 2. Ali Hajimiri received the B.S. degree in electronics engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Stan ford University, Stanford, CA, in 1996 and 1998, respectively. He has been with Philips Semiconductors, where he worked on a BiCMOS chipset for GSM and cellular units from 1993 to In 1995, he was with Sun Microsystems working on the UltraSPARC microprocessor s cache RAM design methodology. During the summer of 1997, he was with Lucent Technologies (Bell Labs), Murray Hill, NJ, where he investigated low phase noise integrated oscillators. In 1998, he joined the Faculty of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, where he is Thomas G. Myers Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of Microelectronics Laboratory. His research interests are high speed and RF integrated circuits for applications in sensors, biomedical devices, photonics, and communication systems. In 2002, he co founded Axiom Microdevices Inc., whose fully integrated CMOS PA has shipped more than one hundred and fifty million units, and was acquired by Skyworks Inc. in Dr. Hajimiri is the author of The Design of Low Noise Oscillators (Springer, 1999) and has authored and coauthored more than 140 refereed journal and conference technical articles. He holds more than 50 U.S. and European patents. He has served on the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), as an Associate Editor of the IEEE JOURNAL OF SOLID STATE CIRCUITS, as an Associate Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS II, a member of the Technical Program Committees of the International Conference on Computer Aided Design (ICCAD), Guest Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES, and Guest Editorial Board of Transactions of Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan (IEICE). Dr. Hajimiri was selected to the TR35 top innovator s list (formerly TR100) in He is a Fellow of IEEE and has served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid State and Microwave Societies. He is the recipient of Cal tech s Graduate Students Council Teaching and Mentoring award as well as the Associated Students of Caltech
4 Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award. He was the Gold medal winner of the National Physics Competition and the Bronze Medal winner of the 21st International Physics Olympiad, Groningen, The Netherlands. He was a co recipient of the IEEE JOURNAL OF SOLID STATE CIRCUITS Best Paper Award of 2004, the IEEE International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) Jack Kilby Outstanding Paper Award, a two time core cipient of CICC Best Paper Award, and a three time winner of the IBM Faculty Partnership Award as well as National Science Foundation CAREER award and Okawa Foundation Award. 3. Samuel Palermo received the B.S. and M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in From 1999 to 2000, he was with Texas Instruments, Dallas, TX, where he worked on the design of high speed serial data communication ICs. From 2006 to 2008, he was with Intel Corporation, Hillsboro, OR, where he worked on high speed optical and electrical I/O architectures. In 2009, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Texas A&M University where he is currently an assistant professor. His research interests include high speed electrical and optical links, clock recovery systems, and techniques for device variability compensation. Dr. Palermo is a recipient of a 2013 NSF CAREER award. He was a coauthor of the Outstanding Technology Directions Paper (Jack Raper Award) at the 2009 International Solid State Circuits Conference. 4. Jafar Savoj received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1996, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Dr. Savoj s areas of expertise include technology and product development for wireless, wireline, and analog systems. He is currently an Engineering Director with the Serdes Technology Group at Xilinx, San Jose, CA, and leads high speed, low power wireline transceiver development for FPGA applications. From 2008 to 2010, he was with Qualcomm, Santa Clara, CA, and led the advanced technology development group for wireless connectivity. He was responsible for development of WLAN and Near Field Communication (NFC) transceivers, and low power chip to chip interfaces for mobile platforms. From 2005 to 2008, he was a principal engineer at Rambus, where he developed ultrahigh speed data converters for software programmable wireline transceivers. Prior to that, he held design engineering positions at Marvell Semiconductor, Santa Clara, CA, focusing on fiber channel and Gigabit Ethernet transceivers; and at Transpectrum, Los Angeles, CA, architecting 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s optical transceivers in CMOS technology. He held a lecturing position at Stanford University in He is the author of High Speed CMOS Circuits for Optical Receivers (Kluwer, 2001). Dr. Savoj was a recipient of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society (SSCS) Predoctoral Fellowship for , and the Beatrice Winner Award
5 for Editorial Excellence at the 2001 ISSCC, and the Design Contest Award of the 2001 Design Automation Conference. He is a SSCS Distinguished Lecturer and a technical program committee member of ISSCC (Analog Subcommittee). He served as a technical program committee member of the IEEE Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (CICC) from 2001 to 2007 and the IEEE Symposium on VLSI Circuits from 2007 to He was an Associate Editor for the IEEE JOURNAL OF SOLID STATE CIRCUITS from 2008 to 2011 and a Guest Editor for the Journal in 2005, 2006 and 2011.
