Course Description: Study of historical and contemporary approaches to corrections and the administration of penal institutions with emphasis in the organizational structure, function, and personnel requirements of correctional institutions and philosophy behind their operation. Special attention will be directed towards modern concepts of rehabilitation and problems associated with their implementation in penal institutions. Prerequisite(s): Junior or senior standing. Course Objectives: By the end of this course, you will: 1. Understand the historical development of corrections in America. 2. Comprehend the relationship between society and the offender. 3. Comprehend the broader forces at work in institutional and community corrections. 4. Understand the current correctional systems in America. 5. Understand the philosophical bases by which offenders are treated. 6. Understand the various program models of institutionalization for adults.

3 **Exams** There will be three 100-point exams (including the final exam), which will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions. Tests will cover materials from the class lectures, films, both texts, and any guest lecturers who may have attended class. Any missed exam must be made up on May 1, All make-up exams (regardless of the reason you missed the exam) will be in essay format. May 1, 2015 is the only date you may make up the missed exam. **Notes Pages** Students will submit notes pages on the days noted on the tentative course outline. Each notes page is worth 10 points. Students can score a 0, 5, or 10 on this assignment. Zeros will be given for no to minimal effort. A score of 5 means that you gave average effort (or filled out about half of your sheet). A score of 10 means that you exceeded expectations and filled in your entire sheet of paper with notes. This will be a normal size page (8.5 X 11) with any notes you wish to have from the chapter. Make sure your name is put at the top! I will save these for you and give them back to you on exam days for you to use on the test. There are a couple of rules attached to this: 1) the notes must be your own! Do not share the responsibilities with another person, 2) you may not photo-copy pages out of the book and put them on your notes page, and 3) these must be turned in at the beginning of the class. No late assignments will be accepted!! If, for some reason, you miss class on the due date, you may them to me. Make sure you do so before class time. Once I receive it, I will you back stating that I received it. If you do not get an back from me, it means I did not receive it and you will receive a zero (0). There are ten (10) chapters for a total of 100 points. Please keep in mind that if students do not abide by the rules, then this privilege will be taken away and overall points for the course will be recalculated. **Poster Presentation at the OCJA Conference** The Oklahoma Criminal Justice Association conference will be held in the UCO Nigh Center on Friday, April 3 rd from 8:00 am- 3:00 pm. Students will work in groups to prepare a professional-style poster related to corrections and will present it at the conference. Please see the bottom of the syllabus for examples of acceptable posters. Students will be individually and peer-graded by their groupmates as well as by the professor. This assignment is worth 100 points. We will decide, as a class, how we want to divide up into groups and the topic each group will present. Please see the bottom of the syllabus for a grading rubric for this assignment. At least one person in each group must present the poster at the conference to obtain the points for this assignment. Students should the professor the final poster on March 24 th. The professor will let the class know more specific details about poster printing, the time of the presentation, etc. when it gets closer to April 3 rd. **Extra Credit** Students do have an opportunity to earn up to 15 extra credit points. I have a book list of approved books about corrections. Some are memoirs, some are more academic in nature, etc. These books are located in the library. Students can sign up for a book of their choice (see the professor to sign up), read the entire book, and do a five (5) minute presentation on it in class (see the instructor to schedule a time to present). The presentation should include: what the book was about, how it relates to this course, something that was interesting about the book, something you found disturbing about the book, and anything else that stood out. The student should also be able to answer questions related to the book. **Attendance/Participation** Class attendance and participation are expected and mandatory. I take roll at the beginning of class. Students will be given 10 points per day they are present. I will begin taking points on January 20, I will not take points on exam days or on April 30, This leaves 25 days I will take points for attendance. I will omit your lowest three (3) scores. Please note that I also take off points for tardiness. If you are 15 minutes late to class- you are tardy. Two tardy marks equals one absence. You are expected to arrive in class on time and not to leave early. With the exception of an emergency, you should let me know ahead of time if you must leave class early (either via or in person prior to class). I encourage all class members to participate actively in
4 class discussion, but talking to others during class lecture or discussion, reading the newspaper, sleeping, writing letters, and completing outside assignments are disruptive and, therefore, not acceptable. You MUST turn off or mute all cell phones and pagers. DO NOT TEXT MESSAGE IN THIS CLASS!! If you bring a laptop to class, do NOT watch movies, do Facebook, etc. I will ask you to leave class. Your observance of these guidelines is expected and appreciated. This course addresses five of the university s transformative learning goals: Discipline knowledge of the history/makeup of prisons; leadership of what it takes to make an effective leader in corrections; problem solving and how to effectively deal with correctional issues/challenges that inherently happen in prisons; global/cultural competencies and how various cultures are represented within the prison setting; and wellness as it relates to the health concerns of offenders as well as employees within a prison. A reader would not understand what this poster was about. Acceptable 1-9 Points Supports readability yet no flow to the poster The poster is acceptably attractive though it is a bit messy. Most graphics are in focus and the content is easily viewed and identified from 4 ft. away. Adequately written and organized, clear, reasonably easy to follow. Some grammatical and spelling errors. Sources are cited incorrectly. Description is adequately clear but could be more concise. A reader may be confused about the focus of the poster. Good Points Supports readability The poster is attractive in terms of design, layout, and neatness. Most graphics are in focus and the content is easily viewed and identified from 6 ft. away. Writing is acceptable, organized, clear, and easy to follow. 1-2 grammatical and/or spelling errors. Sources are cited correctly. Description is mostly clear. A few elements are excluded making it an incomplete research poster. A reader would know exactly what the hypothesis, research, statistics, and conclusion is.
