1 MAstery Mastery at CCP Program 1700 Spring Garden St. Philadelphia, PA (phone) CEEB School Codes: Simon Gratz: Lenfest Campus: Pickett Campus: Shoemaker Campus: Thomas Campus: LaQuanda Jackson Program Supervisor Christine Mikulski Program Manager School Profile MISSION All students learn the academic and personal skills they need to succeed in higher education, compete in the global economy, and pursue their dreams. We believe that educational inequity is the most pressing social problem facing our country the civil rights issue of our day. Mastery is a network of exceptionally high performing urban schools that demonstrate that all students not just those attending selective schools can succeed and achieve academically. We currently serve close to 7000 neighborhood students at twelve Elementary and High School campuses throughout Philadelphia. HISTORY Mastery s first school was founded in September 2001 by a coalition of business and civic leaders and opened the doors to our Flagship Campus Lenfest in Center City Philadelphia. In January 2005, Lenfest Campus was named an Exemplar charter school by the U.S. Department of Education, one of only 15 schools selected nationwide. Mastery was then invited to turnaround three low performing, violent School District of Philadelphia schools: Thomas in South Philadelphia (05), Shoemaker in West Philadelphia (06) and Pickett in Germantown (07). Under Mastery management, test scores increased an average of 50+ points per grade and violence decreased by 85%. In , Mastery will once again partner with the School District of Philadelphia to turnaround one of its lowest performing elementary schools in addition to the 11 high schools and elementary schools that we are already running. MODEL Mastery combines a rigorous academic curriculum with a sweat the small stuff proactive approach to building an achievement-focused school climate. We integrate modern management and educational best practices that drive student achievement. Mastery insists on both high expectations and high support for all students. Our program is distinct in several ways: Relentless commitment to student achievement. Mastery instruction means teaching and supporting students until they learn. We use rigorous assessment and data-feedback loops to measure and ensure success. Teacher promotion is based upon impact on student gains, not seniority. Many Entries, Single Exit. Our scaffolded course sequence addresses students at their incoming skill level, yet holds all students to a single college preparatory graduation standard. High Bar for Student Success. We utilize a mastery-based grading system where students need to earn a 76% in order to pass a class, and they must pass every class in order to progress to the next grade-level. Failure is not an option. Real World Preparation. We go beyond academics by explicitly teaching students social-emotional skills, including a rigorous 70-hour professional internship placement, to ensure they demonstrate the real world skills required for college and the global economy in order to graduate. Mastery at Community of Philadelphia (CCP) Mastery Charter Schools - Community of Philadelphia (CCP) is in its 2 nd year as Mastery's first full time dual enrollment program. The program is comprised of 35 high-achieving students from each of Mastery's five high school campuses in Philadelphia: Lenfest campus in Center City, Thomas campus in South Philadelphia, Pickett campus in Germantown, Shoemaker campus in West Philadelphia, and Gratz campus in North Philadelphia. Students were identified by campus advisers and administrators as exceeding their peers in academic ability, participation in extra-curricular activities, and personal character. Mastery students at CCP are on an accelerated track to high school graduation; students will complete the academic requirements for high school graduation in the Fall semester, and take courses for college credit in the Spring semester. Mastery students in the CCP program take college-level courses as seniors in high school while still connected to their home campuses for extra-curricular activities.

2 STUDENTS The 35 students in the inaugural Mastery at CCP class come from all 5 of our high school campuses. Therefore, their economic and ethnic background mirrors the student body of all Mastery Charter secondary schools. 68.6% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and 19.8% receive Special Education services. Incoming students arrive three grades behind in Math and two grades behind in Reading. Our graduates leave Mastery as hard-working, persistent, college-ready students prepared to succeed in higher education and the workplace. The ethnic background of our students is: 90.4% African American 3.2% Hispanic 2.8% White 2.8% Asian American.8% Other SCHOOL SCHEDULE Our students enter our doors academically behind, and it is our job to close the achievement gap. This translates to the need to work harder and longer than your typical school. Mastery students are in school significantly more than their counterparts in the School District of Philadelphia: two-week earlier start in August; one-week longer in June an 8-hour daily schedule (8-4) compared to 6.5-hour daily schedule (8:30-3:00); 7 hours math instruction weekly instead of 5; mandated Saturday school for additional academic programming; mandated summer school in July, 40-hours per credit failed during the academic year. CURRICULUM Mastery offers a rigorous college preparatory curriculum for all students. Courses in the younger grade levels meet students at their incoming skill-level and move them up to grade-level to reach the same college entry endpoint by graduation. No honors designation for honors level work is made, as all courses are college-oriented. AP Courses are noted below. We do not limit the number of APs students take, however the majority of our AP courses are offered to seniors, and therefore many of the students in the CCP at Mastery program will not have had a chance to participate. All courses are credited on a semester basis; the value (ranging from ) is based upon actual time in the classroom. Please note: Students attending the CCP at Mastery program are coming from a variety of Mastery Charter campuses and have, therefore, taken a number of classes that may not have been offered universally. Class offerings for grades 9-11 are noted in the chart below. 12 th grade course offerings are reflected in the CCP Course Catalogue. GRADE POINT AVERAGE All Mastery coursework is graded on a scale. The Mastery Charter GPA is based upon a 4.0 scale and measures overall student achievement. It is a rigorous scale, anything below a 76 earns a zero grade point and zero credit. AP courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale. Summer school courses are pass/fail and weighted on a 3.0 scale. GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade earned by the course credit = = = = = = = 3.00 >76 = 0.00 Distinguished Honors: GPA 3.75 High Honors: GPA of Honors: GPA of CCP at Mastery Class of 2013 A statistical profile of their academic performance and test scores through June 2010 is provided below.
