6 MY UW-MADISON My UW-Madison (My UW) is a secure, easy-to-use gateway to personalized campus information and services. When you log on to My UW at my.wisc. edu you get secure access to content based on your NetID and password. You can customize My UW to meet your unique needs by adding, arranging and removing features from your display. You can even change the layout of My UW to match your style. My UW is organized into several tabs, and under each tab are numerous modules of information (e.g., links, applications, data) related to the tab subject. Some of the useful information you can find at My UW includes: STUDENT CENTER: You can search for course offerings, enroll in courses, add or drop classes, access or epay your tuition, check on the status of your financial aid application, accept or decline your financial aid award, review your class schedule, check your grades, and update personal information, including your address and phone number. WISCMAIL: Your web-based account provides you with unlimited storage and includes spam and virus filtering. 5

Anyone with a valid UW-Madison ID can use the computers free of charge. With more than 1,000 computers, the labs provide access to the Internet and popular word processing, spreadsheet, and statistical software packages, as well as course-specific offerings. These resources are available for both Windows and Macintosh users. The labs also provide access to color printers, scanners, and digital editing resources. Consultants are on duty to help you get started and to answer questions. 7 Most labs are open into the evening and on weekends. Computers are usually available with little or no waiting. At peak times, such as the end of each semester, certain labs can be very busy. For details

9 of each lab s location, hours, available hardware and software, and accessibility, see the website at (see map on page 10) 8

17 protect your computer & identity The security tips below are key to practicing safe computing. See wisc.edu/security for more information. Install the free Security Software (anti-virus and spyware protection) that is available at SOAR and the DoIT Tech Store and Help Desk locations. Keep your operating system patches up to date. Use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) when accessing the campus network from off-campus locations or when using wireless networks. Choose strong passwords and do not share them with others. Don t open or attachments from unknown sources. Never give out personal information or account numbers (e.g., Social Security number) in response to an unsolicited phishing request. Adjust your spam filters to ward off spam. Back up your computer data on separate media (i.e., external hard drive, flash drive, CD, DVD, etc.) and store in a secure place. Log out of applications fully, especially on public machines (e.g., campus kiosks) and quit web browsers. Limit the amount and type of identity information you post on social networking and other websites. 16
