1 The focus of The Schie Factory is to create a pleasant and well functioning central city area with good connections to its neighbourhoods, a strong fundamental structure and a clear identity. Therefore we need to: 1. respect and adapt to the historical context 2. strengthen the presence of the river Schie 3. focus on a sustainable phasing plan 4. provide a strong identity

2 URBAN FABRIC Schiedam developed as a city along the river Schie. The Schie and its quays have always been the central point in the transformation of the historic town into the present dynamic city. Along with the development of Schiedam, the scale of the developments changed from small and intimate town centre proportions into the large scale sixties developments and traffic explosion around the present Koemarkt with an almost peripheral character. There is a need in this area to focus again on the qualities of the site as a pivot point between the historical town centre, the 19th century surrounding neighbourhoods and the banks of the river with its industrial heritage: intimate squares with distinct buildings and a reconnection to the river Schie instead of large scale undefined spaces without a clear identity. The study area includes several distinct buildings and cityscapes which are overshadowed by its present role as a main traffic junction. The area which is now overall called Koemarkt comprises of the original small scale Koemarkt square to the south, the western edge of Rotterdamsedijk and all the way up to the Broersvest in the north. On this site, traffic and pedestrians, visitors and inhabitants all share the same undefined space. The adjacent VROM site has limited connections to the Koemarkt and lacks a clear function. The main goal is to combine the quality that living and working near a city centre provides (all amenities nearby, good public transport links, liveliness on the streets) with the historical and industrial surroundings of the area along the river Schie. The urban intervention provides for a clear distinction in traffic and pedestrian areas by reducing the traffic flow from Rotterdamsedijk and introducing the car as a visitor on the Koemarkt square. The connection from Buitenhavenweg to the city centre along the Schie and as far as into the Passage is symbolized and shaped through distinct elements: a new city entrance gate (Rotterdamse Poort) and the Arcade which follows the original town border. The development plan emphasizes the new and existing historic buildings: hotel de Kroon will be restored to its original status, café Hoek and the municipality/ VVV building will become distinct elements along the boulevard, the new Schie Factory will give a liveliness to the quay and the Leppla building will accentuate the traffic square. The development plan is not aimed at large scale interventions. With clear and simple means based on the historic development of the site it provides a framework for a more human scale in the centre of the city. It creates a vivid urban environment with good connections to its neighbourhoods and a renewed focus on the riverbank. 3 ARCADE The connection from Buitenhavenweg to the city centre along the Schie and as far as into the Passage is symbolized and shaped through distinct elements: a new city entrance gate (Rotterdamse Poort) and the Arcade which follows the original town border. Each of the 48 colums of the Arcade corrensponds to one of the lines of the poem Zwart Schiedam by the local vicor and poet JC Perk. The poem reflects on the beauty and working attitude of Schiedam. 4 URBAN PLAN KOEMARKT - north side Paving: natural stone with distinct lining every 5.4 metres. Paving: natural stone with a continuous lining along the square. Distinct areas for outside terraces in front of the bars and cafe s along the Koemarkt. Small shops and workspaces are located along the arcades on the factory square. Along the waterside sitting space is provided in which water features are integrated. Low planters divide the square into smaller areas and provide sitting space. Planters form the division between the different terraces and event spaces. Trees are integrated into the square by means of stone tree grates. Thus the upper and lower part of the square form a continuous space. Distinct lining in the pavement every 5.4 meters Cars and bikes are visitors on the Koemarkt. Pedestrian pavement continues over the road. Low elements guide the traffic along the square. Long benches along the quay provide resting space with views over the river Schie Large trees provide an historic and intimate atmosphere on the square.
