5 What Does International Studies Offer? International Studies is more than just world affairs or globalisation. It goes well beyond the news headlines to explore how societies and their different systems of government interact, in ways that define the world in which we live and our daily lives. International Studies provides knowledge needed to thrive in the rapidly changing world of tomorrow. The Bachelor of International Studies draws on a broad range of recognised expertise from a range of scholarly disciplines including security; Asian, American and development studies respectively; international relations; history; and languages. This specialist program is designed to provide you with skills, knowledge and concepts to help prepare you for a career in organisations with an international or intercultural focus. You will gain an understanding of key political, social, economic, strategic and cultural relationships within the global community and patterns of interaction such as foreign policy and diplomacy. Australia s place and role within Asia and the world is studied, and you will be given an insight into societies, cultures and alternative systems of governance that are of particular significance to Australia. You will study the international movement of people as immigrants, refugees, workers, students, tourists and investors and the impact that globalisation has on contemporary life. Languages other than English and cross-disciplinary approaches to international studies also form part of the program. The BIS requires three years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time) and the honours program an additional year (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Enrolment in the honours program may be offered to a student who meets certain academic criteria and subject to the school being able to provide appropriate resources and staff to supervise the program of study. 7 Our Students Bachelor of International Studies students have excelled at Flinders, winning awards and scholarships, and benefiting from a wide range of exchange opportunities. Upon completing the BIS, many of our students have also gone on to further studies overseas, and exciting job opportunities both in Australia and abroad! Here are some recent news stories on high achieving BIS students. This could be you Overseas study rewards global thinking Flinders Law and International Studies student Philippa Ward won the 2010 Henry Fong Award for her contribution to increased understanding of global citizenship. Awarded annually to a student from the 11 member universities of the International Network of Universities (INU), the prize supports the successful candidate for a semester of study overseas at another INU university. Philippa, whose essay on global citizenship was described by the judges as personal and insightful, spent six months at Malmö University in Sweden. Flinders students win Endeavour Scholarships In 2011 Flinders student Jakob Braunack-Mayer won a prestigious Endeavour Scholarship as part of the 2011 Prime Minister s Australia Asia and Pacific Australia Undergraduate awards. The awards were announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard during the East Asia Summit in Hanoi. A student in the joint Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice/Bachelor of International Studies course, Jakob is also studying Mandarin cross-institutionally as part of his degree. In 2012 two Flinders students won the scholarship. James Baker and Tom Gerrits are both studying the joint Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice/Bachelor of International Studies, and will be funded for two years by their Prime Minister s Australia Asia Award to study and complete internships overseas. James will travel to Indonesia, and Tom to Hong Kong. Flinders student is given opportunity to be part of the UN Business and Human Rights Agenda In 2013 two Flinders Bachelor of International Studies students, Emma Gorman and Michaela Wauchope, worked closely with the newly established United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights. Emma and Michaela assisted Dr Alexandra Guáqueta in her capacity as a member of the Working Group, over a four-month internship. Testimonial from a Bachelor of International Studies student, who completed majors in Asian Studies and Chinese: Studying Chinese has provided me with a wealth of opportunities. Last year I heard from Flinders about the Cheung Kong Scholarship, which is a generous Australian Government initiative in conjunction with a Hong Kong company. It provides students the chance of studying a semester in any Asian country. As a recipient of this scholarship, I undertook study of Chinese language at East China Normal University, in one of China s most exciting and diverse cities, Shanghai. The course was 20 hours a week of learning by total immersion in the language. I also took the opportunity of taking an internship with the South Australian Government Representative Office as part of the practical content for a Globalisation offered by Flinders. It was a busy schedule, but I was able to meet many interesting people from the Government and commercial sectors of Shanghai and South Australia. By living and studying in an environment of international students from every corner of the globe, I was able to learn about many cultures through the great friends I made. I feel this experience was unique as Shanghai seems to attract scores of vibrant young people eager to experience and capitalise on China s current whirlwind buzz of growth.

20 Academic Integrity Important University policies and procedures about enrolment, teaching and assessment are set out in the Student Related Policies and Procedures: In particular, students should become familiar with the policy on Academic Integrity: This section explains how important academic conventions about honesty and the attribution of sources are understood and administered. Of course, new University students may be uncertain or confused about some aspects of academic conventions. Individual academic units and conveners are likely to explain these matters further when you study individual s. Even honest and genuine misunderstandings of these conventions may nevertheless affect the grade which you receive for work submitted for assessment. More seriously, proven cases of academic dishonesty (i.e. proven cases of cheating or stealing the work of others or copying the work of others without full acknowledgement in the manner prescribed) which do not result from a genuine misunderstanding may have very serious consequences for the student concerned. The penalties for extremely serious cases of academic dishonesty can include expulsion from the University. Why is academic integrity important? In an academic context we show respect for other people s work and demonstrate our professionalism by being honest, trustworthy and acting with fairness, respect and responsibility. There are various behaviours that compromise academic integrity. These include: Plagiarism passing off someone else s work, whether intentionally or unintentionally, as your own for your own benefit. Plagiarism through lack of, or incorrect, referencing is one area which poses students a great deal of problems. Collusion presenting work as if it has been done independently when it has been the result of unauthorised collaboration. Other forms of cheating - copying or allowing your work to be copied, or purchasing or obtaining essays, tutorial, test or exam answers. If you have any questions or concerns about academic integrity, you should speak with your Student Program Advisor, or contact the Student Learning Centre on , or slc@flinders.edu.au.
