1 Bangor, WI Content Area: Landscape Design Lesson Heading: Computer Landscape Design Activity Description: Listed below are activities that I used to teach the ProLandscape 10 design software from Drafix. Pro Landscape 10 Name This computer program has 3 separate areas: Image Editor, Landscape Planner, and Landscape Proposal. In order to understand the program, you need to follow these areas in order. The tutorials that explain each of the different skills need to be followed in order. Each new skill requires mastery of the skills before it. There will be the temptation to zip through the program without using the tutorials. Falling into this temptation is very similar to driving a car on empty; sooner or later you will need help. Procedure: 1. Select the Pro Landscape folder 2. You will see 4 options to click on. Click on Pro Landscape tutorial 3. Double click on tutorial overview start hear. 4. Select start here and read it! 5. Next click on the how to use tutorial project At this point, you are ready to start using the program: Procedure: 1. Read each tutorial and then practice each skill that you learn about. Be sure to save on a disk and on your U drive after each skill is performed. Save the project as Lastname tutorial project 2. Print of each skill and put your name, the skill you are demonstrating and the date. Print off in Black and white. Turn the sheet in to Outline of skills to practice and master: Image Editor Skills Using your own background images Placing grass Placing plants and objects Adding retaining walls with perspective Simulating plant growth Selecting plant sizes Adding outdoor and holiday lighting Adding text Removing unwanted areas Creating your own plants and objects Date completed

2 Proposal Tutorials Date Completed Tour proposal Create a bid Add to an existing bid Points and Grading: 1. Each tutorial project will be worth 10 points. All tutorials should be done by April 8. Projects: 1. I will take pictures of the student entrance of the school. You will design a landscape for the front of the school. You will also figure out the cost of the material and put together a proposal bid for the project. Project will be worth 200 points and due date is yet to be determined. 2. You can take a picture of your home or another house and design the landscape for the building. Again, you will need to go through the whole process of editing an image, planning the landscape and putting together a bid proposal. Landscape Design Pulaski High School Beautification Project Name Directions: As you might have noticed, our high school is lacking in its landscape. Your job is to design a landscape for the school. You will go through all three parts of the Pro Landscape Program (Image Editor, Planner, and Proposal). I have taken digital pictures of the high school (both the teacher and student entrances) and saved them to the Ag. Dept. Assignments drive under Landscape Design. Project will be graded on completing all required tasks; putting together a proposal and job estimate, presenting your plans to the class, neatness and professionalism. Project and presentation is worth 200 points. Image Editor: 1. Plants appropriate for the Pulaski area (NO you can not use palm trees or cactus!!!!!!) 2. You need to have a variety of shrubs, trees, and perennial/annual flowers. 3. Remember to add mulch around the plants 4. Have some type of edging or retaining walls 5. Add a focal point to the landscape 6. A picnic area in the student entrance section 7. Night lighting for the flag 8. Print a version of the school with the landscape being new (less than 2 years old) and a version of it at mature size of the plants. 9. Follow all principles of landscaping Planner:

3 1. I scanned a floor plan of PHS. You will find the scanned picture in the Assignments Drive under the Ag. Dept. in the Landscape Design folder (do not use the folder marked Landscape or Mr. E Land/Hort). Import this into a new drawing. 2. The plants that you choose on Image editor need to show up again on the drawing. If you place 3 pyramidal arborvitae at the corner of the gymnasium closest to the student parking lot, there needs to be 3 pyramidal arborvitae on the drawing in the same location. 3. All of the requirements for the image editor need to be met in the Planner portion of this project. Proposal: 1. I ordered a 2005 price list from Green Bay Nursery. This will supply the prices that you will use for a price quote for the project. 2. If you placed plants on your design that GB Nursery does not carry, you will need to find the price of that plant on the Internet or from another nursery. You will need to provide documentation of this price for me to see. 3. An accurate price proposal includes many different parts a. Plant materials b. Construction required (ex: building fences) c. Lawn d. Service - For parts A, B, and C you take the total cost of that portion and multiply it by 35% for profit and overhead costs - Service fees are 10-12% times the total cost of plants, materials, lawns, profit, and overhead. Presentation: 1. To be a successful landscaper, you need to be able to design an eye appealing drawing and be able to communicate your thoughts to the customer. 2. You will be presenting to the class your design for the high school. Points to cover in your presentation are: a. Why did you chose the plants that you did Explain the costs of the project Additional Comments: 1. A great majority of the rest of this course will deal with using this landscape program. I have a few other projects and ideas in mind and will fit these into the course as the situations arise. 2. This program has a lot of potential. Enjoy and have fun with it. This is your opportunity to use the latest technology in the landscape industry. Landscape Design Ideal Home Landscape Design Name Directions: This activity allows you to plan for the home of your dreams. You can use pictures of off the Internet or pictures of your current home. You will need dimensions of the home so that you can do the

4 planner portion of the design. The home does not need to be in the Pulaski area. Please state where your home is located Project will be graded on completing all required tasks; putting together a proposal and job estimate, presenting your plans to the class, neatness and professionalism.
