4 REPORT In August, 1973, the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association adopted the Guidelines for the Approval of Legal Assistant Education Programs as recommended by the Special Committee on Legal Assistants. The Committee subsequently developed supporting evaluative criteria and procedures for seeking American Bar Association approval. Applications for approval were formally accepted beginning in the Fall of Programs applying for approval are required to submit a self-evaluation report which provides a comprehensive description of the program, including but not limited to the following areas: organization and administration, financial support, curriculum, faculty, admissions, student services, advisory committee, library, and physical plant. An on-site inspection of the program is conducted by representatives of the Association if the contents of the self-evaluation report indicate compliance with the ABA Guidelines. For an initial approval, the inspection team is chaired by a member of the Approval Commission of the Standing Committee on Legal Assistants, and consists of a lawyer, an experienced legal assistant and a director of another institution s program. On a reapproval visit, the team which is again chaired by a member of the Approval Commission, is a two-member visitation team and includes two of the previously mentioned groups. The purpose of the on-site inspection is to verify the information provided in the self-evaluation report and to acquire supplementary information helpful to making an evaluation which can only be obtained through the person-to-person contact and observation the visitation affords. The inspection is conducted over a one and onehalf day period and consists of a series of meetings with the advisory committee and other individuals involved to a lesser extent and in some aspect of the program, such as the registrar, financial officer, placement coordinator and admissions and counseling staff. The team also observes legal specialty classes in session and may inspect various program data, including detailed curriculum materials, admission and placement records, student evaluations of faculty members and courses, and the like. Following the on-site inspection an evaluation report is prepared by team members. The Approval Commission reviews the evaluation report and makes its recommendation to the Standing Committee on Legal Assistants, which in turn, submits its recommendation to the American Bar Association House of Delegates for final action. -4-
5 The Standing Committee on Legal Assistants has completed an inspection of the programs identified below and found them to be operating in compliance with the Guidelines for the Approval of Legal Assistant Education Programs and is, therefore, recommending that approval be granted. Edison Community College, Paralegal Studies Program, Fort Myers, FL Edison Community College is a publicly supported institution accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. An Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded upon completion of the program. Bucks County Community College, Paralegal Studies Program, Newtown, PA Bucks County Community College is a public, two-year college accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers two program options: an Associate of Arts degree and a certificate. The following schools were recently evaluated for reapproval. Having demonstrated compliance with the Guidelines for the Approval of Legal Assistant Education Programs, the Standing Committee on Legal Assistants recommends that reapproval be granted to the following programs: Coastline Community College, Legal Assistant/Paralegal Program, Fountain Valley, CA Coastline Community College is a two-year, public community college. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The college offers both an Associate of Arts degree and a certificate. A distance education program for military students is also available. Mount San Antonio College, Paralegal Program, Walnut, CA Mount San Antonio College is a publicly supported community college accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Graduates of the paralegal program are awarded an Associate in Science degree. University of California, San Diego, Legal Assistant Training Program, San Diego, CA The Legal Assistant Training Program at the University of California, San Diego is part of the University Extension and is self-supporting and dependent upon student tuition. The university is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate. -5-
6 Widener University Law Center, Paralegal Studies Program, Wilmington, DE Widener University is a private institution accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Legal Education Institute offers four programs in paralegal studies: a Bachelor of Science degree, an Associate in Science degree, a certificate of completion, and a legal nurse consultant certificate. National Center for Paralegal Training, Paralegal Program, Atlanta, GA The National Center for Paralegal Training is a private institution accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. NCPT offers both an Associate of Arts in Legal Studies and a certificate. Roosevelt University, Lawyer s Assistant Program, Chicago, IL Roosevelt University is a private institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Roosevelt offers three options: a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree, a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a postbaccalaureate certificate. Kirkwood Community College, Legal Assistant/Paralegal Program, Cedar Rapids, IA Kirkwood Community College is a public community college accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Graduates of the program are awarded either an Associate of Arts degree or an Associate of Science/Career Option degree. Eastern Michigan University, Paralegal Studies Program, Ypsilanti, MI Eastern Michigan University is state supported and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The university offers a Bachelor of Science degree. Oakland University, Legal Assistant Program, Rochester, MI Oakland University is a state supported institution; however, the legal assistant program receives no direct support from state funds and is expected to be selfsustaining through student tuition. The university is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate. Missouri Western State College, Legal Assistant Program, St. Joseph, MO Missouri Western State College is a public, four-year institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The program offers the following options: a Bachelor of Science degree, an Associate of Science degree, a certificate, and a minor in legal assistant. -6-
7 Raritan Valley Community College, Legal Assistant Program, Somerville, NJ Raritan Valley Community College is a public community college accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate. Berkeley College, Paralegal Program, White Plains, NY Berkeley College is a private institution accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers an eighteen month program leading to an Associate in Applied Science degree. Bronx Community College, Paralegal Studies Program, Bronx, NY Bronx Community College is a public community college accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The college offers two programs: an Associate in Applied Science degree and a certificate. University of Oklahoma Law Center, Legal Assistant Program, Norman, OK The University of Oklahoma Law Center is state supported and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Graduates of the program are awarded a certificate. Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Paralegal Business Studies Program, Oil City, PA Clarion University is a public institution accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Graduates of the program are awarded an Associate of Science degree. Marywood University, Legal Assistant Program, Scranton, PA Marywood University is an independent, Catholic institution. It is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Marywood offers a Bachelor of Arts degree, an Associate of Arts degree, and a post-graduate diploma program. Edmonds Community College, Paralegal Program, Lynwood, WA Edmonds Community College is a public institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The college offers an Associate of Technical Arts degree, an advanced paralegal certificate, and a medical paralegal certificate.
