On Wednesday, as the centerpiece of our Mission, we will have a communal penance service, offering each one of us the opportunity to experience the joyful, freeing forgiveness of God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. For many Catholics, the thought of going to confession creates not an anticipation of joy and freedom, but rather a sense of fear and anxiety. None of us likes to reflect on our sins, failures, and brokenness. We often think, "I know what a mess I am. God must really think I am a disaster." And so we find ourselves dreading the thought of speaking our sins, out loud, to God, in the presence of a priest. And very often that leads to avoiding the Sacrament of Reconciliation entirely, sometimes for many years. But what actually happens in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is the very opposite of fear, anxiety, and judgment. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is all about God's infinite love for us, and his constant desire and willingness to wash away our sins when we simply turn to him with true sorrow and ask for his forgiveness. We admit our sins out loud because that is a way of taking responsibility for them. But then God washes them away entirely. God himself no longer remembers them. God forgives us and washes us clean. And with the washing away of sins comes the most beautiful, freeing gift of grace: we are strengthened to love God even more, to trust in him more deeply, and to allow him to work even more profoundly in our hearts to give us complete freedom to the selves God created us to be. Those who go to confession on a regular basis find that it becomes one of the most joyful aspects of their spiritual lives, an experience of God's love deeply connected to the same love poured out in the Eucharist. I always encourage people to go to confession every few months, even monthly, because the forgiveness and grace we receive through the Sacrament of Reconciliation strengthens us uniquely in our relationship with Jesus Christ. In addition to the communal penance service, confession is available throughout the year every Saturday afternoon and after the 7 am Thursday daily Mass--and any priest is always willing to meet with you at any time for confession. If you haven't been in a while, go with a light heart, and let the priest know you need to be led through the experience, which he will be happy to do. Go without fear, and with a joyful anticipation of receiving a freedom that is unique. Experience that forgiveness and loving grace which Jesus longs to give you in this sacrament. ~ Fr John David Bulletin notices and advertising: All information must be sent to the parish office no later than 8AM on Mondays.
