1 GENERAL EXAMINATIONS CLEP EXAMINATION Indian Hills Community College awards no credit for General Examinations. If you plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, you must check that school s policy on acceptance or non-acceptance of CLEP credits, as it may be different from Indian Hills Community College s policy! SUBJECT EXAMINATIONS Each Subject Examination covers material taught in an undergraduate course with a similar title at many colleges and universities. A college usually grants the same amount of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP examination as it grants students who successfully complete that course. Many Subject Examinations are designed to correspond to one-semester courses; some, however, correspond to full-year courses. Unless stated otherwise in its description below, an examination is intended to cover material in a typical one-term course. Exams are administered on computer and are 90 minutes long w/exception of college composition which is 120 minutes long. To view a tutorial, go to: Indian Hills complies with Iowa College s agreement that only CLEP scores at 50 or higher (the most recent national norms of people who have taken the course) will receive any credit. If you do not meet the minimum requirement to receive credit for the examination, you must wait three months before you can retake the same exam. The retake fees are the same as the original fees. Credit by examination will not be granted: 1. If it duplicates courses previously passed or failed. 2. For a course for which the student does not meet the stated prerequisites(s) listed in the granting community college s catalog. 3. For a course which is a prerequisite to one for which credit has previously been earned. Students may use a maximum of 16 credits toward the Associate of Arts degree. CLEP Exams do not remove grades of F on courses taken, nor will credit be awarded for any course previously passed or failed. CLEP credit will not affect your grade point average. All CLEP exams are computerized exams. Students should allow approximately 2 hours for each CLEP exam. To register for CLEP Exams, create an account online and pay CLEP with a credit card $ The website is To schedule for CLEP Exams in Ottumwa, contact the Testing Center (ground floor of Trustee Hall) at or ext
2 For CLEP testing in Centerville, contact the Centerville Success Center at or ext The fee for CLEP testing is currently $80 for each exam. This fee is established by the Educational Testing Services and may increase at any time. Indian Hills Community College requires an additional $25 fee at the time of testing. These payments must be separate payments. The Indian Hills fee can be in the form of check, cash or money order. Students will receive their score immediately for all exams as soon as the test is finished w/the exception of the College Composition w/essay. For those students taking College Composition w/essay allow 4-5 weeks for score. If you have questions about your score report, or whether or not credit has been awarded, please contact Joni Kelly in the Registrar s office located in the Bennett Student Services Building or by calling COMPOSITION AND LITERATURE *American Literature deals with the prose and poetry written in the United States from colonial times to the mid-twentieth century.
