25 College Board Chinese Initiatives Overview Began as a collaboration with Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban in 2006 Goals: To support the development and expansion of Chinese language and culture programs in U.S. K-12 schools, and develop a pipeline for AP Chinese Language and Culture The estimated reach of the College Boards Chinese Initiatives work is over 30,000 students and educators each year 25

26 College Board Chinese Initiatives Guest Teacher and Teacher Trainee Programs Guest Teacher Program: Launched in 2007 Has placed over 900 teachers in U.S. schools since its debut All teachers are selected in a rigorous interview process, attend pre-service training in China and the U.S., and are supported during placement by U.S. veteran Chinese teachers Teacher Trainee Program: Places emerging teachers in U.S. schools to receive hands-on training and to enhance schools cultural resources and programming. This year, 218 Chinese guest teachers and 27 trainees are placed in 95 institutions (82 public school districts, 5 charter schools/districts, and 8 private schools) in 32 states. 26

27 Since 2007, over 900 Guest Teachers have taught in 38 states! 27

28 Chinese Initiatives: Confucius Institutes & Classroom Programs Establishes district-housed Confucius Institutes and schoolbased Confucius Classrooms in institutions with existing Chinese programs There are currently 5 district based Institutes and 15 school based Confucius Classrooms Grant structure: districts and schools apply to be part of program and are reviewed and accepted by both the College Board and Hanban. Annual funding and material resources provided by Hanban Monitoring, site visitations, web and on site professional development offered by the College Board Participation in national and international Confucius Institute and Classrooms training, workshops and conferences

29 College Board Chinese Initiatives Chinese Bridge Delegation Program Program began in 2006 More than 3600 US educators have visited China on this program The week-long program in China includes: visits to schools meetings with Chinese educators and students resources and presentations on Chinese language education visits to historical and cultural sites opportunities to establish partnerships between Chinese and U.S. schools Chinese Bridge Delegation 2014 dates: November 5-13, 2014 The delegation will travel to Beijing and then sub-divide in groups, each to travel to one of six different regions of China 29

30 College Board Chinese Initiatives AP International Student Leadership Program This new program for post AP Chinese students was piloted in August 2014 Program goal: Provide both incentive and in-china learning opportunities for university students who previously took the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam The program offers a rigorous and immersive Chinese language program which focuses on developing Chinese as a valuable skill in the students chosen professions In 2014, 22 students studied for two weeks in a special program at Beijing Language and Culture University. They attended language and culture classes, engaged in a variety professional and cultural activities and met with leaders of major business and professional enterprises Program will grow to include up to 100 students in coming years First time that College Board engaged students who have completed AP examinations in a post-ap experience First time College Board conducted an international student program 30

33 Audio Capture Non-Operational Pilot in 2014 Upload & Store in Cloud App or Web-based Audio Capture Key Findings Secure, Web-based Playback 100 Students, across 12 Classrooms in 9 Schools Diverse demography (urban, suburban, rural) Students in the pilot utilized existing software on smart devices to capture and upload spoken responses, which were then able to be securely accessed and played back over the web Students find smart device recording methods very natural and less stressful versus current methods School technology investments are very diverse (desktop vs. laptop vs. tablet), and in-school internet connections are unreliable Confirmed current CD burning to be a labor-intensive and problematic process Multiple capture solutions are necessary to support access and contingencies
