California State University Fresno is the oldest, largest and most respected public university in California s San Joaquin Valley, the nation s largest agricultural region. Its alumni and faculty have distinguished themselves in leadership and service throughout the region and around the world. This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to continue to build on a strong base of academic and financial achievement to support the outstanding programs and students of the University. The successful candidate will be asked to join California State University, Fresno, also known as Fresno State, during the summer of University Information Fresno State is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University system and serves Central California s diverse, growing population, while interacting with the state, the nation and the world. The prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has awarded Fresno State its Community Engagement Classification, acknowledging the University s extensive partnership with Central California. Fresno State, with an enrollment of more than 23,000 students, is a minority-serving campus and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), reflecting the rich diversity of the region. Fresno State is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The University offers 62 undergraduate degree programs and 45 master s degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences and in professional disciplines emphasizing agriculture, business, engineering and technology, health and human services, and education. Fresno State also has established doctoral programs in educational leadership, physical therapy and nursing. Through transformational applied research, technical assistance, training and other related public service activities, the University builds partnerships with business, education, industry, government and community benefit organizations. The Fresno State campus is a 1,400-acre green space comprising a 1,000-acre farm that is part of the agriculture program and a 400-acre academic campus that is shaded by 4,000 trees and is designated as an arboretum. The campus sits near the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, home to Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks. Fresno is California s fifth largest city, and the San Joaquin Valley is one of the world s richest agricultural areas. Academic Excellence Consistently ranked among the West's top universities, Fresno State was recently recognized by Washington Monthly as 10th in the nation among master s degree-granting public universities and second in the California State University system. The rating is based on successful recruitment and graduation of lower-income students and student engagement in community and public service. The University s schools and colleges are: The College of Arts and Humanities, notable for a nationally acclaimed MFA in Creative Writing and a linguistics program dedicated to preserving a local Native American language. The College of Social Sciences, whose Department of Criminology is recognized for developing and providing students with innovative curricula in law enforcement, corrections, victimology and forensic and behavioral sciences. 3 Faculty Approximately 550 tenured/tenure-track faculty, plus an additional 650 full- and part-time lecturers, comprise an accomplished corps of teachers and scholars. The tenure-line faculty balance teaching and scholarship and meet demanding standards in both areas. Agricultural, social and bench scientists, as well as health, engineering and education researchers, provide rich opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students on their research teams. They are steadily increasing Fresno State s capacity for grant and contract funding, which reached a record $41 million in Faculty humanists and artists are recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions to theory, criticism and performance, and the business faculty s real-world expertise and scholarly acumen are widely regarded. Faculty and student distinction in areas such as creative writing, viticulture and enology, and high-energy physics continue to gain prominence. Community Engagement In line with the mission and vision of the California State University System, Fresno State seeks to be an institution fully engaged with its community. Faculty across the University believe in the value of community engagement, offering an increasing range and number of service-learning courses. In addition to earning Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation, Fresno State was one of nine finalists in the Corporation for National and Community Service s General Community Service Category of the 2010 President s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. It was the fifth consecutive year Fresno State received this highest level of federal recognition for commitment to civic engagement and effective community service. The privately endowed Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning operates under the research-supported knowledge that students realize unique personal, professional and academic benefits when involved in service to others. The Richter Center seeks to expand the culture of service at the University, ensuring that all Fresno State students take advantage of service opportunities. Alumni Fresno State alumni are setting the pace in education, agriculture, industry and government from our local communities to the state and national levels and even into space. Alumni include winners of Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes and a Pulitzer Prize. Space explorers, a U.S. ambassador, a Treasury secretary, university presidents and chancellors, best-selling authors, top executives for influential corporations and elected officials are Fresno State alumni. The Fresno State Alumni Association dates from the first graduating class of From headquarters on campus in the Smittcamp Alumni House, the Alumni Association maintains database records of more than 200,000 alumni, past students and friends, and is engaged in finding new ways to sustain connections with the campus.
4 Intercollegiate Athletics The mission of the Department of Athletics is to support the objectives of the University. At its core, the department endeavors to provide a distinctive educational and life-skills development experience for young men and women with exceptional athletic abilities. Athletics supports gender equity, promotes diversity, and focuses on the well-being of its student-athletes on the field and in the classroom. Intercollegiate athletics is uniquely positioned to aid the institution in meeting its objectives of regional engagement, campus community development and pursuit of national recognition and prestige for Fresno State. The University has developed a nationally respected and competitive NCAA Division I athletics program that protects the integrity of the institution and is a highly visible source of campus, regional and alumni pride. Fresno State Athletics transitioned into the Mountain West Conference in 2012 as one of the most successful programs over the last10 years in the Western Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs won three of the last five Commissioner s Cups, awarded yearly to recognize overall achievement of all athletic teams. Boasting a strong success rate on the playing surface, the Bulldogs have an even greater success rate in the classroom. With over 425 student-athletes, Fresno State has continued to raise its overall APR scores and has a graduation rate higher than the general student body. Fresno State won NCAA National Championships in baseball in 2008 and in softball in Former student-athletes succeed beyond their college days, with a former Bulldog pitching in the 2012 World Series, four former Dogs in the 2012 Super Bowl, and numerous alumni who have won Olympic medals, played professionally and coached. Leadership Agenda for the Vice President for University Advancement The Vice President for University Advancement is a key member of the University s leadership team, contributing to the overall university strategy and operations. As a member of the President s new leadership team, effective collaboration with the President, executive leadership team, the Foundations and the University community is critical to the attainment of the University s goals. This person will collaborate with the President and University leadership to direct and oversee the Advancement units within the University. Among the features on the leadership agenda for this new vice president are: Advancement Organization: Working with the President and the University community to assess the structure of the Advancement organization as it relates to the goals of the University, the role of the Foundations, the work of the academic units and the relationship to the community.
5 Building Strong Community Relations: Broadening the base of support for the University in the community and leveraging the existing economic infrastructure should be a major part of the leadership agenda. With 160,000 alumni living in the region and a strong agriculture industry, the opportunity to strengthen support for the total University is apparent. Capitalizing on the agriculture industrial base by being involved in community activities and creating linkages to the University is an important part of the agenda Strategic Vision: Foundation: The VPUA will be a partner with the President, executive leaders, deans, faculty and staff to shape the vision of the University for future generations. Building on the Strategic Plan for Excellence IV , the Vice President will guide the development of a strategic advancement plan that will support the goals for the next century. The assessment of the role of advancement, as it relates to the work of the Foundation, is critical to the success of the University s goal of being a top tier, mid-level university in California and the nation. Working with the Foundation to build community relationships, expand alumni involvement and broaden the donor base are some of the elements of this agenda. Responsibilities of the Vice President for University Advancement The Vice President for University Advancement has the responsibility to work with alumni, parents, donors and the community to strengthen the resources available to the University to enhance academic quality, support student needs and strengthen the region. The University Advancement division includes the Alumni Association, University Development and University Communications, and provides initiative, direction and oversight for the University's governmental relations activities. Approximately 65 people are a part of the University Advancement team. This team is dedicated to fostering an environment that is respectful towards all. University Advancement will continue to ensure diversity and promote equal opportunity for all who are engaged in activities that support the goals of the University and the Division. University Advancement cuts across the University community in the services it provides and the collaborative role that each department plays in advancing the Plan for Excellence IV which guides the work of the University. Diversity, inclusiveness, equitable practices and respect are key words in the mission and activities of the Division as it serves the entirety of Fresno State. A mark of the success of the Advancement team was the Campaign for Fresno State which impacted the University in a transformational manner. The final total was $214,222,190 which came from 34,629 donors who made 163,212 gifts to the University. Qualifications The successful candidate will be a strong leader with progressively responsible experience as an administrator and leader of development/advancement programs. The University seeks a seasoned
6 professional who can partner with the new President to continue to expand the financial and human resources to support the outstanding students and programs. Significant strength in the field of development is essential and a demonstrated understanding of the importance of the role of alumni and community in the success of the University is critical. Qualified candidates must possess a combination of education and experience required to perform the full range of duties assigned to the Vice President for University Advancement. At a minimum, a bachelor s degree is required; a master s degree is preferred. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and accomplished individual with preferably ten years of leadership experience in development management; a track record of significant personal success in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship at major and principal gift levels, and a deep professional knowledge of best practices within all components of the advancement paradigm. A passion for the work of the advancement area who demonstrates the ability to effectively build a strong and collaborative team and manage the area effectively while serving as a mentor and role model A leader with budgetary acumen who has demonstrated understanding and support for the role of the University s foundations in the advancement efforts A leader who inspires confidence and trust that is characterized by transparency, openness and inclusiveness of all sectors of the University and its stakeholders, and willing to be the face of the University for fundraising in the region An exceptional strategic planner who understands the importance of being guided by the Strategic Plan of the University and can relate the work of advancement to it An individual of high integrity with a sense of authority and is trustworthy An excellent listener who communicates effective orally and in writing A management style that values accessibility, diversity, and adaptation to change A leader who will provide strategic vision, leadership and direction for the Advancement division in preparation for the next campaign A leader who thinks and plans with a long term perspective integrating multiple points of view into planning A leader who strategically builds and strengthens relationships and partnerships with key external constituencies of Fresno State, including foundations, corporations and businesses that lead to philanthropic investments for the university A leader who has meaningful involvement in community, media and constituent relations Nominations, Applications and Inquiries The Vice President for University Advancement search committee will begin a review of applications immediately and continue work until an appointment is made.
