5 Changing Schools and the Need for Subject Specific CPD Research shows (Tribal Group, 2010) that professional development for teachers is the key driver of school improvement. Increasing the subject-expertise of the teaching workforce without placing a greater burden on funding and without taking teachers away from their students is a key tool in this. Flexible and tailored CPD opportunities that allow for teachers with differing levels of experience to grow in their roles is crucial. The new Masters in Teaching and Learning being offered at BCU enables this to happen. Subject expertise is crucial to school improvement and pupil attainment. Research shows that it is best achieved not through attendance at courses, but through an ongoing and sustained relationship with professional learning. The new Masters in Teaching and Learning being offered at BCU enables teachers of arts subjects to develop their subject specific expertise through its action research and cyclical learning model.

6 Changing Schools and the Need for Subject Specific CPD The Masters in Teaching and Learning will enable teachers of arts subjects, in partnership with academic staff at BCU, to tailor action research directed specifically at the needs of the teacher and their institution. The theoretical underpinnings of learning through subject specific materials will be used to inform action research that will directly improve practice in the school, and through this, the outcomes for pupils. This input is particularly timely when schools will be seeking justifications for their arts budgets. Arts subject teachers, middle leaders and senior leadership teams will be looking to robustly and rigorously justify their subjects using the language of school improvement for the 21 st Century. The new Masters in Teaching and Learning will enable arts subject staff at all levels of development to access this language and implement it directly into their classroom or departmental practice.

List the following:- 1) What role would the university play in these actions? 2) What innovations could this lead to in your teaching/management? 3) How would you record the impact of these innovations? 4) How would you share your findings?
