1 PURPOSE AQF LEVEL AQF LEVEL 9 CRITERIA MASTERS DEGREE (COURSEWORK) PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES The Masters Degree (Coursework) qualifies individuals who apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of contexts for professional practice or scholarship and as a pathway for further learning. KNOWLEDGE (Coursework) will have: a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in a discipline and/or area of professional practice knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to a field of work and or learning The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling is designed to teach and assess the established and developing body of knowledge required for rehabilitation counselling practice in Australasia and internationally, covering all of the knowledge and skills domain established in the most recent (2010) Australasian rehabilitation counselling competency study, as well as broad human services knowledge. Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate multi-disciplinary knowledge about: various systems influences on rehabilitation counselling and human services practice the role of, methods for and applicability of research within human services and research questions relevant to the health and human service professions human behaviour, the nature of social inequality, and the implications of diversity, disability and chronic illness and be able to work effectively with people from diverse and disadvantaged groups workplace health and safety practices, procedures and legislation the roles of other professions in the same field and inter-professional practice the relationships between personal, professional, organisational and sector values the roles and functions of organisations within the rehabilitation counselling and human service sectors the principles of ethical practice applicable to rehabilitation counselling, human services, disability and mental health. Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate discipline specific knowledge about: rehabilitation counselling professional practice including: policy and legislation; disability, Document Number 2013/ Page 1
2 rehabilitation and psychosocial theory; and current professional literature rehabilitation case management including: principles and processes; funding and regulatory requirements; and policy and legislation vocational rehabilitation including: vocational assessment tools and qualitative evaluation processes; career development theories; and vocational training, job matching and placement processes counselling including the psychosocial aspects of behaviour and theoretical frameworks relevant to counselling workplace disability/injury case management including: functional implications of injury and disability; and return to work assessment, planning and management workplace intervention and program management including: injury and disability prevention; and injury and disability program management. 3 SKILLS (Coursework) will have: cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship Cognitive skills in this masters program focus on logical and critical thinking about rehabilitation counselling and related theory and about theory practice integration to generate innovative solutions to complex problems. Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate cognitive and creative skills to: critically evaluate the application of counselling theories and utilise suitable micro-counselling skills in working with people with disabilities in rehabilitation and other human service settings think critically about theories and their research underpinnings and their application to individuals, rehabilitation practice and human service contexts identify ethical implications of various theoretical and service delivery frameworks and plan responses to them evaluate the different approaches to research to address questions relevant to the health and human service professions identify, analyse and respond appropriately to a variety of ethical dilemmas and challenges design appropriate services to meet the needs of clients within legislative, policy and funding constraints identify and access community resources, employers, education opportunities, government bodies and insurers as required for practice write case reports, articles and funding proposals. Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate communication skills to: work creatively and effectively with a range of stakeholders with different understandings, perspectives and priorities influencing the rehabilitation process develop effective relationships with clients, colleagues, employers and treatment providers negotiate workloads and manage caseloads effectively, while upholding professional standards explain the roles of the rehabilitation counsellor and other professionals involved in service provision to people with disability, injury or disadvantage Document Number 2013/ Page 3
4 explain regulations and procedures to clients and other stakeholders advise clients about the educational and vocational implications of assessments and job market conditions and develop mutually agreed vocational goals provide prospective employers with appropriate information about job seekers and supports available to employers provide counselling to clients Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate technical skills to: utilize assessment data, advice from medical professional, industry guidelines and research publications to conduct rehabilitation planning, solve case problems and achieve rehabilitation outcomes conduct vocational assessments and identify transferrable work skills for vocational planning write vocational assessment reports, conduct labour market research and job task analyses identify client work personality characteristics and provide career counselling identify and address specific counselling needs, such as adjustment to disability counselling assess client needs across all life domains prepare budgets for injury/disability management programs develop individualised and cost effective rehabilitation, injury management, return to work and suitable duties plans. 5 APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS (Coursework) will demonstrate the application of knowledge & skills: with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning with high level personal autonomy and accountability to plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship Graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Counselling will demonstrate the broad application of knowledge and skills: within a range of rehabilitation work settings and to work effectively in interdisciplinary environments to plan, and execute research to address questions relevant to the health and human service professions to independently adhere to professional and ethical standards in complex practice situations.
