1 J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y The Salem Spotlight Salem Township Elementary School Newsletter Ohio s New Learning Assessments By Neil Schmidt, Communications Director Ohio s adoption of new state standards has brought new assessments, and with it new terminology, acronyms and testing procedures. This article will address the changes and what to expect for your child in the months ahead. Students in grades still take the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). The new state tests replace the Ohio Achievement Assessments (OAAs) for grades 3-8. Third graders still take the OAAs in the fall because of the third-grade reading guarantee, but those who passed it in the fall take the English Language Arts and Math state tests this spring. The new state tests, which Ohio calls End-of-course tests, are currently for grades 3-9, plus students in any grade taking American History and American Government. The state tests are composed of two parts: Performance-based Assessments (PBA) and End-of-year Assessments (EOY). The PBA testing window is Feb. 16-March 20, and the EOY testing window is April 13-May 15. So the end-of-course exams equal a PBA plus an EOY. There are two more acronyms you re going to hear: PARCC and AIR. PARCC stands for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers; it s the group that created the English Language Arts and Math assessments Ohio will use. AIR stands for American Institute of Research; it s the company that created the Science and Social Studies tests Ohio adopted. Which tests your children take depends on what grade they re in. ELA and Math assessments are given annually up to grade 9. Science is covered in grades 5 and 8 and in Physical Science (some ninth graders). Social Studies is grades 4 and 6, plus anyone enrolled in American History or American Government. Another change: In previous years, we tested a whole grade at one time, but this year, we ll be assessing different classrooms on different dates within the testing window. When your classroom teachers have their particular classroom testing dates, they will share them with you. Each district gets the option to take tests online or with paper and pencil. We decided grades 3-6 would take the ELA with paper/pencil and would take Math, Social Studies and Science online. Grades 7-12 will take everything online. We participated in a pilot last year for PARCC (ELA and Math) to better prepare us for the administration of these tests this year. Here s an example of what testing would look like for a fifth grader, broken down between the PBA and EOY sections: Performance-based Assessment: 3 rd Grade Testing Change! Subject Testing window Session 1 Session 2 Session 3 ELA 2/16 3/20 75 min. 90 min. 60 min. Math 2/16 3/20 80 min. 70 min. Science 2/16 3/20 75 min. End-of-year Assessment: Subject Testing window Session 1 Session 2 ELA 4/13 5/15 75 min. Math 4/13 5/15 75 min. 75 min. Science 4/13 5/15 75 min. For further information about the new state testing, click this link: All 3 rd Grade students will now take the Ohio Reading Achievement Assessment and the PARCC Math Assessment in the Spring. The state originally mandated that 3 rd graders would take PARCC in English Language Arts and Math.

2 Key February Testing Dates February 2 4: CogAT (Grade 2) February 5 6: IOWA (Grade 2) February 2 12: STAR (Grades K-4) February 17 March 20: PARCC Performance-based Assessment (Grades 3 & 4) Clinic News by Jessica Knochel As we enter the cold & flu season, it s important to work together to decrease the spread of illness. The following suggestions will help you determine when your child should not attend school: *Your child has a fever of 100 degrees or above the previous evening or in the morning. Your child must be fever free (without medication) for 24 hours before returning to school. *your child has experienced vomiting or diarrhea during the night or in the morning Prevention is the best intervention! Parent/Teacher Conferences Conferences for grades Kindergarten through Fourth will be held on Thursday, February 26 th from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. An additional conference night for grades Kindergarten through Second grade will be held on Thursday, March 5 th from 4:30 pm 8:00 pm. Your child s teacher will contact you about specific conference times prior to our conference dates. Character Counts Update by Raegan Malblanc Grades K 4 learned about the character trait Responsibility this month. The key ideas for learning about responsibility are: duty, accountability, excellence, and selfcontrol. Kindergarten listened to a story and focused on being good listeners to show responsibility. First and second grade watched a Popcorn Park video about this topic and planned how to show responsibility in all areas at school. Third graders listened to an Auto B Good book, and fourth graders watched an Auto B Good video about responsibility. All students were given the opportunity to practice what they had learned about being responsible at school through various activities, including a Think it Through worksheet that talked about consequences, how to plan ahead for handling situations, and an activity about making good decisions. Yearbooks Yearbook order forms will come home the week of January 26 th. The deadline for ordering a yearbook is February 27 th for K-2 and February 23 for 3-4. When ordering, please be aware that the K-2 Yearbook and the 3-4 Yearbook are provided by separate vendors. 2 Important Numbers Salem Twp. K-2 Phone: (513) , opt. 2 Salem Twp. 3 Spelling Bee Fifty-four students demonstrated their acumen in the Salem Elementary 3rd/4th Grade Spelling Bee! After 10 rounds, third-grader Jack Miracle finally outlasted fourth-grader Kaman Pryor for the victory. Congratulations to all for their fine efforts! Jack will now participate in the WCPO 9 On Your Side Online Semi-Finals for a chance to advance to our Regional Spelling Bee on February 21 st. Click here for a photo album from the Salem Bee. Specials Spot: P.E. 1 st and 2 nd Grade: by Craig Eckstein First and second Grade students are currently working on their basketball skills. Students have been practicing their dribbling. During the next few weeks they will learn how to pass the ball to keep it away from the defense. Our next unit will be bowling. 3 rd and 4 th Grade: by Shane Cummings Third and Fourth Grade students have been concentrating on Throwing skills since early December. This will most likely go on into early February. The students have been introduced to "basic skills" and have been able to incorporate "advanced skills" along the way. When you ask them what the basic skills are for throwing, you should hear or see ideas such as: "set up your feet", "hands and elbows", "step towards your target", "rotate and throw", and "drag your toe". There have been advanced skills added as we learn and master the basics. You would hear or see things such as: "turn the ball away", "3-finger grip", "follow through (slap your knee)", and a "12-6 rotation" on the ball (spin the ball backwards). Our daily routine consists of a warm-up with fitness exercises. We are also trying to progress towards a goal of being able to jog at a comfortable pace for a minimum of five minutes, without stopping. The students are given an opportunity to perform various walking and jogging activities to acclimate them in a progressive manner. At this point, we break into small groups for our skill work. And, I always try to culminate or conclude our P.E. class with a large group game to utilize the skills learned, in a friendly, competitive situation. In February we will move into our next set of skills. This would include striking skills and hand-eye coordination activities. We will also continue to progress towards our "End of Year Fitness Goals". Fitness testing will begin April 20th. Please remember to send your children to school in their proper athletic shoes on their scheduled P.E. days. Recycled Bottle Caps & Lids Mosaic Our Kindergarten through Second Grade students are currently collecting different colored plastic bottle caps and lids for a mosaic that will be permanently displayed in our K-2 foyer. They will then vote on a theme for the mosaic during one of their art classes. (Kindergarten students will vote in their classrooms.) Once the theme for the mosaic is decided the students will help Mrs. Allen construct it. Every K-2 student will have an opportunity to participate in the creation of this project! 3

5 Attendance Policy It is the obligation of the parent, guardian, or custodian to report your child s absence or tardy each day. A phone call received by the attendance office, on each day of the student s absence, is sufficient to excuse the child s absence. This call is to be made within 2 hours from the start of the school day. After the student s 8 th parent call, the student must provide written documentation from a treating physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant stating the days absent and reason for such absence. Please see the full Warren County Common Attendance Policy using the link on our website under Forms. If you will be picking your child up early from school, please send in a note to help us make sure your child is prepared and ready to go. Cold Weather & Outdoor Recess In general, if the outside temperature is 30 degrees or above, the children will play outdoors. If the temperature or wind chill is below 30 degrees, the children will play indoors. Please dress your child according to the weather conditions. Children required to stay indoors during recess will need a note from their parents/guardians. Visitor Procedures & Student Safety In an effort to continue to keep Salem Elementary as safe as possible, if you are bringing your child to school after our 9:20 am start time or picking your child up earlier than our 3:20 pm car rider dismissal, you will need to use the Visitor/Clinic Door (Door #13) in order to sign your child in or out of school.
