Summary This document describes the capacity of the Gateway to deal with data reading and writing on disk, data sending and receiving in the network. So the test in total is divided into two categories: Disk test and network performance test. For the Disk test, the performance is also compared with the test result of another Ubuntu laptop.
1. Performance test Performance test plays an important role in the test phase of one system, because the test result deeply depends on the system performance. With a clear knowledge of basic capacity of a system, we can carry out a better evaluation of the results and further adapt the parameters used to obtain a better performance, in order to have faster system throughput, lower power consumption etc. 2. Disk Test Disk test is further divided into two steps [1]. a) CPU test b) File IO test CPU test is used to measure the calculation ability of CPU by calculating prime values to a maximum number, while File IO is used to measure the speed of writing or reading data on disk. The speed of disk operation reflects the limitation of the speed when we save data or read date from the database. 2.1 CPU test Command: sysbench --test=cpu --cpu-max-prime=20000 run CPU frequency RAM (bits) Total execution (Hz) time (s) Voyage/Alix board 498M 8G 592 Ubuntu/Guojun laptop 2.1G 20G 35.8 As we can see from the table, the frequency of the Alix board CPU is four times lower than that on Guojun s laptop, however, the speed of calculation is even lower, which is 16 times. 2.2 File IO test Command: $ sysbench --num-threads=16 --test=fileio --file-total-size=3g --file-test-mode=rndrw prepare $ sysbench --num-threads=16 --test=fileio --file-total-size=3g --file-test-mode=rndrw run $ sysbench --num-threads=16 --test=fileio --file-total-size=3g --file-test-mode=rndrw cleanup Thread sequential write sequential read random read random write Voyage/Alix Ubuntu Voyage/Alix Ubuntu Voyage/Alix Ubuntu Voyage/Alix Ubuntu Kb/s Kb/s 12.18
Kb/s Kb/ s Kb/s Note: all the unit here is Mb/s, except those that have been followed with units. 2.3 Disk analysis The Disk access in our system is mainly about the sequential write and read because of the large amount of data collected from the base station. So from the data above, the speed of writing and reading can reach the maximum when only 1 thread is running. The speed of writing is 6.82Mb/s, while the speed for reading is 26.96Mb/s. This Alix board is not suitable to run large software tools and multiple applications at the same time which is shown by the CPU frequency and speed of file reading and writing. 3. Network performance test As all the sensor data is send over the DTN network, it is necessary to measure the speed of the network communication [2]. This test is divided into three test cases: a) TCP_STREAM b) UDP_STREAM c) TCP_CRR TCP_STREAM is used for single TCP connection with large amount of data size, while UDP_STREAM is designed for UDP connection which doesn t require pre-connection between the client and server. TCP_CRR means multiple TCP request and response communication within the time for one TCP connection. 3.1 TCP_STREAM Basic command to use is: netperf -H l m 16k (reference from 0 RECV socket size bytes Send socket size bytes Send Message size bytes Elapsed time secs k 50M k 10M Throughput 10^6 bits/sec
k 1M k 32k K 16K K 8K K 4K K 2K k 1k k Figure 1: Throughput for TCP_STREAM 3.2 UDP_STREAM Basic command to use is: netperf -t UDP_STREAM -H l m 16k (-s 8k,8k) (Reference from 0 socket size bytes Send Message size bytes Elapsed time secs. Messages Okay Errors M M M Message too long k K K K K Throughput 10^6 bits/sec The message size should be smaller than the send socket size. If not, there will be errors.
3.3 TCP_CRR Command: netperf -t TCP_CRR -H r 1024,32 The transaction time decreases as the total size of request and response increases. 3.4 Network performance analysis For large amount of data transmission inside the DTN network, TCP_STREAM should be the one we need to focus, because it used for single TCP connection with large amount of data size. From the above data, we can see that the network throughput increases as we enlarge the message size for each transmission. However, the growth becomes smaller and smaller as we enlarge the message size and finally reach a constant value, 94.01Mb/s. 4. Web Server Performance 4.1 Motivation and Goals Since we use ALIX board as web server, it is necessary to evaluate the web server performance for ALIX board. Through the measurement, we have to find out the request and reply throughput of a web server. 4.2 Benchmark Tool Httperf Httperf[3] is a tool for measuring web server performance. It provides a flexible facility for generating various HTTP workloads and for measuring server performance. The focus of httperf is not on implementing one particular benchmark but on providing a robust, high-performance tool that facilitates the construction of both micro- and macrolevel benchmarks. The three distinguishing characteristics of httperf are its robustness, which includes the ability to generate and sustain server overload, support for the HTTP/1.1 and SSL protocols, and its extensibility to new workload generators and performance measurements. Autobench Autobench[4] is a simple Perl script for automating the process of benchmarking a web server (or for conducting a comparative test of two different web servers). The script is a wrapper around httperf. Autobench runs httperf a number of times against each host, increasing the number of requested connections per second on each iteration, and extracts the significant data from the httperf output, delivering a CSV or TSV format file which can be imported directly into a spreadsheet for analysis/graphing. 4.3 Setup Test Environment Install the Httperf and autobench on ubuntu machine and the script lists below. Install the Httperf cd /usr/local/
wget tar xvzf httperf tar.gz cd httperf /configure make make install ln -s /usr/local/bin/httperf /usr/bin/httperf Install autobench cd /usr/local/src/ wget tar zxvf autobench tar.gz cd autobench make make install 4.4 Test Procedures Test command autobench --single_host --host uri1 /index.php quiet\ --low_rate 50 --high_rate rate_step 10\ --num_conn timeout 5 --file results.tsv This command causes httperf to use the web server on the host with IP name , running at port 80. The web page being retrieved is ``/index.php'' and, in this simple test, the same page is retrieved repeatedly. The rate at which requests are issued starts 50 requests per second to 100 requests per second and each iterate increases 10 requests per second. The test involves initiating a total of 7500 TCP connections and on each connection one HTTP call is performed (a call consists of sending a request and receiving a reply). The timeout option selects the number of seconds that the client is willing to wait to hear back from the server. If this timeout expires, the tool considers the corresponding call to have failed. Note that with a total of 7500 connections and a rate of 50 per second, the total test duration will be approximately 150 seconds, independent of what load the server can actually sustain. Results Analysis dem_req_rate: is given from 50 to 100 with increasement of 10 requests per second for each round. req_rate: Request rate gives the rate at which HTTP requests were issued and the period that this rate corresponds to. In the picture above, the request rate was requests per second, which corresponds to 10.0 milliseconds per request. As long as no persistent connections are employed, the results in this section are very similar or identical to results in the connection section. However, when persistent connections are
used, several calls can be performed on a single connection in which case the results would be different. con_rate: Connection rate line shows that new connections were initiated at a rate of connections per second. This rate corresponds to a period of 10.0 milliseconds per connection. The last number in this line shows that at most 14 connections were open at any given time. min_rep_rate: minimal statistics for the reply rate avg_rep_rate: average statistics for the reply rate max_rep_rate: maximum statistics for the reply rate stddev_rep_rate: standard deviation statistics for the reply rate resp_time : "Reply Time gives information on how long it took for the server to respond and how long it took to receive the reply net_io: Net I/O giv es the average network throughput in kilobytes per second (where a kilobyte is 1024 bytes) and in megabits per second (where a megabit is 10ˆ6 bits). errors: statistics on the errors that were encountered during a test. Errors includes client timeout, socket-timeout, connection refused, connection reset and file descriptors unavailable. 4.5 Web server performance analysis We draw the two figures for throughput and response time in this case. It is clear that when the request sends from from 50 to 80 requests/second, web performance is well. When requests rate is more than 80, the performance decrease and throughput fluctuates around 75 requests/second. For response time, it increases dramatically from about 200ms to more than 1000ms. Thus we can see the capability of web performance for ALIX board is around process 70 requests/second, rather lower than most of Desktop Computer. This gives us implications that we should not use ALIX board as a web server and design the applications with less http requests in a second. Figure2. Request throughput Figure3. Response time
