2 What is Twitter Twitter is very simple yet powerful concept Twitter is a service for friends, family, and colleagues to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What s happening?

3 What is Twitter Twitter lets you write brief text updates (of up to 140 characters) and broadcast them. People sign up to follow your messages (or tweets as they are known) and you sign up to follow others. You can receive information, news and much more You can share your own news, links or even ask questions of your followers.

5 Sign up for a Twitter Account You will need to choose a unique username Twitter will suggest some people to follow

6 Your Twitter Home Page On the left hand side you will see: The place to enter your own updates The updates of those that you follow On the right hand side you will see: Information about you, who you follow and who you are followed by Links to messages sent to you Trending topics Select profile from the top menu to go to your personal profile page

7 Your Twitter Profile Page This is the page that others see about you. Its URL will be It will show information about you and your recent updates. To customise your Profile page, select Settings.

8 Customise your Twitter Profile You can change your existing settings. You add a one-line bio and your location. You can even protect your updates if you want to keep them private. Password tab to change password Devices tab to add a mobile phone Notices tab to control how you are notified about different things Picture tab to upload a picture or avatar Design tab to change the background colours and images

9 Customise your Twitter Profile Page You can try out different colour schemes and background images of your page. Save the one you like to take effect.

10 Writing your first tweet Remember your tweet can only be up to 140 characters long. The characters will count down as you type. Remember, too, that no one will receive this tweet as no one is following you yet, but at least it will put something in your timeline. Remember twitter is public- so be careful what you post. You can delete posts from your timeline but you need to be quick!

12 Find People to Follow Follow your friends first (use the search function) Directories can help. Example wefollow.com / twellow.com they also list people by interest area Click follow on someone s profile *read their profile and check them out first Or you can type follow (username) Example follow davidlakins 12

13 How to follow someone Take a look at a member s profile, what they are tweeting about, who they are following and who follows them Click the Follow button beneath their profile icon. You will now receive their updates. Many people follow back the people that follow them, but you shouldn t feel obliged to do so. Some people only follow a few others. How many can you cope with? If it gets too noisy, you can always un-follow people. You can also block someone following.

14 Find People to Follow Make sure your bio is filled out properly Join the conversation Ask for retweets Use #hashtags Twitter - Twitter Grader - Twitter Grader by Location - Twellow WeFollow -

15 Send someone a tweet Address a message to any Tweeter by in front of their username. This is known as Note: everyone who is following you will receive this tweet. Note: What s Happening? Will change to Reply to.. if you start your update with

16 Send a Direct Message to a Follower Send a message to one of your followers by using d followed by their username Note: you can only send a direct message to someone who is following you

17 Share a web link If you type in a URL and it is more than 30 characters long, Twitter will shorten it to 30 characters. You could also use a URL-shortening service like the following:- Some of these services will also help you track hits on your links

18 Search for Twitter Trends & Keywords To search for what s happening on a on a particular topic, select Search from the footer bar. Type in your search terms and see the real-time results.

19 Watch Twitter Trends If you want to see what s the hottest news i.e. What are currently the most used words take a look at the Trending Topics, displayed in the right-hand column of your home page. Click on a trend to see the real-time results for this trend.

20 Advanced Searches Search for :- Keywords People Places Dates Attitudes: Positive & negative

21 Using #hashtags #hashtags are also often used to categorise or tag tweets i.e. a number of people all agree to use the same word so that their related tweets can be grouped together, e.g. #dorchester Search for a specific #hashtag and watch the real-time results. The #hashtag may even become a trending topic. Visit to see what s happening right now on Visit to see what s happening right now on Twitter.

22 Grow your numbers quickly Use the search bar to find people in your niche market and Follow, Follow, Follow and Follow again Check 'Mentions' and 'Retweets' daily Be sure to thank anyone who Mentions or Retweets your Tweets personally. Use Hashtags to make your Tweets even more visible 22

23 Grow your numbers quickly Use the Twitter 'Lists' function to create 'Lists' Add any people or organisations to this List who have Retweeted or Mentioned you. Follow Your Industry Leaders and Top Twitter Accounts in your market Retweet their Tweets on a regular basis. This gives you authority by association 23

24 Using a Twitter Client If you don t want to use your web page to write your tweets, there are a number of ways to do this. Use Hootsuite Use a desktop client like Tweetdeck The benefits of using a Twitter Client Manage your tweets and followers Manage multiple accounts including Twitter, Facebook & LinkedIn Schedule tweets Monitor mentions Analyse your tweets / view statistics

25 Twitter on your Mobile You can access an optimised version of Twitter at m.twitter.com There are also Twitter clients for the iphone and Blackberry

26 Twitter 3 rd Party Apps There are lots of 3 rd party Twitter apps. Here are some examples:- Customise your Twitter profile background e.g. Use Twitbacks or Twitter Backgrounds Re-distribute your blog feed via Twitter e.g. Use twitterfeed.com Integrate Twitter with your Facebook account / blog and LinkedIn Keep track of what s being said about you and your company e.g. use tweetscan.com

27 How are You going to use Twitter? Think about the types of tweets you want to write Share Resources (70%) It is not what you know it is what you can share. 70% of Twitter time spent sharing others voices, opinions & tools Collaboration (20%) 20% of Tweets are directly responding, connecting and collaborating with like minded colleagues. Forge personal relationships. Chit-chat (10%) General chit-chat about life

28 Twitter for Self Marketing and Promotion Twitter is one of the easiest tools to build a personal brand Although you will want to promote your company people want to connect with people. So how can you use Twitter to make yourself memorable? 28

29 Twitter as a Customer Service Tool Larger companies are using Twitter as a key part of their customer service The key to great customer service is the speed and quality of your response. When you find someone complaining about an them asking if you can help. Ask them if they d like you to intervene and provide them the information they need. 29

30 Twitter Tools Twhirl - social software desktop client for Twitter delivery, based on Adobe AIR platform Twitterific - from Crunchbase: a Mac-only application that lets you both read and publish tweets to the Twitter website. The user interface is customizable to let you view as much or as little information as you desire. LoudTwitter - posts your daily tweets to your blog Twellow - a useful way to search for interesting people to follow on Twitter, using group categories (social media, marketing, business, etc) TweetDeck - ) Twitterel - a user search client; you type in keywords, find Tweeps who Tweeted those keywords, and then decide whether to follow them or not. Hootsuite - 30

31 Twitter Tools Twitpic - Share photos on Twitter. Post pictures to TwitPic via mobile phone, the API or through the site itself. There are also Twitter clients w/ built-in support for TwitPic. TwtPoll - from Techrunch: "a simple polling app that lets you ask multiple choice questions and provides a shortened URL that you can Tweet TwitterGrader - gives you a grade up to 100, based on a variety of factors that include follower to follow ratio, how many 'elite users' are connected to you, how many tweets you've tweeted, etc. 31
