5 What are your goals for Twitter? It s impossible to use Twitter strategically if you don t know what your goals are. Ask yourself: What are your top goals, personally or professionally? What do you need to help you accomplish these goals? Who do you need to connect with to help you accomplish these goals?

6 What are your goals for Twitter? Example: You are looking to transition from a corporate job to the non-profit world. You need to build connections at non-profits that you are targeting. How can you build those connections using Twitter?

7 Getting Started Create your profile. Start tweeting before you follow anyone! Why? When you follow someone, they will likely check you out to see if they want to follow back. If you don t have a substantive profile and don t have any quality tweets, they won t have a reason to follow you. Find others to follow. Increase your activity through chats and more regular tweeting.

11 Tweeting Limited to 140 total characters. Ideally keep tweets even shorter to enable easy RTing. Ideal length = # characters in your handle - 3 Use link shortener like bit.ly to share links. Use hashtags where relevant

12 Tweeting Make connections & establish your expertise Focus on 5 types of tweets: Sharing information Retweeting the tweets of others Replying to other tweets Asking questions Self-promotion Ideal tweeting ratio is 80/20 80% the first 4 types, 20% or less self-promotion

13 Retweeting 2 methods of retweeting someone: automatically or manually. Manual is preferable so the user sees that you shared their tweet.

16 Replying When you reply to someone, the only users who will see it in their feeds are users who follow both of you. If you want everyone to see it, add a. in front of the user s handle. Use view conversation option to keep track of conversations.

18 Hashtags 2 uses: Indicate what your tweet is about. Follow Twitter chats or parties. Find relevant hashtags to use Trending hashtags on lefthand side of screen Hashtagify.me search for hashtags related to topics of interest. Twubs.com shows popular hashtags, autofill search function for hashtags.

19 Mentions Mentioning someone is a great way to get someone s attention. Different from replying, everyone in your feed and theirs can see it. Example: @katieaune and others for getting profiled

20 Find users to follow Go back to your goals who do you want to connect with? Import your address book to find your current contacts. Search for specific users. Search for topics & follow users who are tweeting about those topics. Visit websites of companies/individuals & see if they re on Twitter. See who the users you already follow are following. Pay attention to Twitter s suggestions in the left sidebar.

21 Hashtags/Twitter Chats Twitter chats or parties are scheduled conversations around certain topics. Typically 5-10 questions are asked & users provide answers using the chat hashtag. Examples: #TTOT, #Foodiechat, #eventprofs, #solosmalllaw Find relevant chats:

22 Build Your Following Most important: provide valuable information Remember the 80/20 ratio 80% of what you tweet should be sharing information or responding to others. Use RTs replies/mentions to attract attention from users. Share your Twitter handle outside of Twitter: on your website, in your signature, on Facebook, Google+, etc.

23 Direct Messaging Direct Message function allows you to privately send a message to anyone who is following you. Useful for moving the conversation to the next level. Still only 140 characters. Do not set up auto DMs poor Twitter etiquette.

24 Get Organized Lists Use Twitter s list function to organize who you follow. Lists can be public or private. Profile >> Lists >> Create List Favorites Great way to keep track of tweets you want to revisit later.

25 Twitter Management Tools Hootsuite.com View separate Twitter streams in one place. Follow Twitter chats. Schedule tweets in advance. View Twitter analytics. Bufferapp.com Install browser extension to easily share tweets and articles. Adds a Buffer option directly in your Twitter feed and to your browser toolbar. Tweetdeck.com similar to Hootsuite.

26 Twitter Etiquette Do not overuse hashtags max 2-3 per tweet. Do not misuse chat hashtags. Do not over-automate Don t automatically share your tweets on Facebook or vice versa they are different audiences and should be handled differently! Do not ask people to RT your tweets.

27 Twitter Etiquette Do thank people for RTing your tweets. Do maintain a good ratio of sharing to selfpromotion. Do be sensitive to natural disasters & other significant events.
