A grade of C or better AND a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in SGN104, SGN105, SGN106, and SGN108 courses is required. (See Sign Language Course Listings and Class Information Handout.) Take ITP assessments for the first time between May and November of the year prior to starting the Interpreter Training Program. Successfully complete all portions of the ITP assessment by June 1 of the year you are entering the ITP Program. (630) , ext Acceptance into the program is based on assessment results, with documentation of a 12.0 grade equivalent level on both sections of the Nelson-Denny Reading Test. This means a minimum score of 12.0 on the vocabulary and comprehension sections of the test. A minimum score of 75 is required for the Compass Writing Skills test. A minimum score of 55 is required for the writing sample. A student has three opportunities to successfully meet assessment requirements. If a student fails to successfully complete assessment requirements on their first and/or second attempts, eight weeks must elapse between testing sessions. This time should be used to improve writing and vocabulary skills before retesting. Guidance is provided by the Tutoring Center and the Center for Learning Assessment for students who do not meet these entry requirements. Passing test scores are valid for 24 months. Complete the special application required for entry into the program. The Interpreter Training Associate in Applied Science program application forms are available from Registration and Records, Counseling, and the Health Professions and Public Service office or on the Internet ( Application to the program must be made prior to the application deadline of April 1 of the year you plan to enter the ITP Program. Veterans or military service members that have current eligibility for either federal VA Education benefits or Illinois military grants [Federal VA Education programs include: Chapter 30, 31, 33, 1606 and REAP. State grants are the Illinois Veterans Grant (IVG) or Illinois National Guard (ING).] Attach a copy of your benefits Certificate of Eligibility to your application. Our office will confirm your benefit eligibility by contacting the Waubonsee Financial Aid Office s VA School Certifying Official. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Rev.7/15

2 SGN courses must be completed within 18 months of the student s planned start date. For example, a student cannot take 2 years off and then decide to enter ITP. This requirement can only be waived by the Dean for Health Professions and Public Service when the student has documented interpreting experience. Official written notification of acceptance into the program will be received via certified mail. ONCE ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM: Understand that a student must complete all ITP courses within a three year time period. Exceptions can only be granted by the Dean for Health Professions and Public Service. Understand that for continuation in the Interpreter Training program, a grade of C or better must be received in each of the major courses. Understand that ITP courses are only offered full time, in block scheduling. These courses are offered during the day on Monday and Wednesday. If you have any questions, please contact the Health Professions and Public Service office at (630) or kcrafton@waubonsee.edu GPA WORKSHEET Prerequisite Courses Semester hours Grade Points SGN104 - Signs in Everyday Use 3 SGN105 - Linguistics of ASL I 3 SGN106 - Linguistics of ASL II 3 SGN108 - Conceptually Accurate Signed English 3 Total Credits 12 Points Letter Grade 3 sem hour class 4 A 12 (3x4=12) 3 B 9 (3x3=9) 2 C 6 (2x3=6) 1 D 3 (1x3=3) grade points DIVIDED BY 12 semester hours = overall prerequisite GPA (min. 3.0) Rev.7/15

3 Interpreter Training Program Frequently Asked Questions 1. Does a student become ineligible for ITP if they've failed the entrance tests three times? What then? If a student fails the ITP entrance exams three times, they can possibly look into a job working with people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but it will not be in an interpreter position. 2. Where can I get additional information about the Interpreter Training Program? You will find additional information about the Interpreter Training Program on our website at or by contacting our Counseling Department at (630) or (630) , ext to schedule an appointment with one of our SGN/ITP counselors, Patricia Klonoski (Sugar Grove Campus) or Ulysses Diaz (Aurora Campus). 3. How long is the program? If you attend classes full time and start in the fall semester, it takes 2 years and 4 months to complete our program. If you have other sign classes or are currently working as an interpreter, this may be shorter. 4. Do I have to attend full time? For the eight classes in the Sign Language portion, you can attend full time or part time. Once you are accepted into the Interpreter Training Program, you must take these classes in "block" format and be full time. Our classes are designed for people who might have to travel a distance. You will attend classes two days a week, Monday and Wednesday, from 8:30a.m.-2:45p.m. 5. Where is your program located? Our program is housed in the heart of downtown Aurora at Waubonsee Community College's Aurora Campus, 18 S. River Street. 6. What about national certification? National certification should be the goal of every interpreter. A bachelor s degree is now required to take this exam. It takes a minimum of 3-5 years of experience before a student should consider taking the national certification exam. Rev. 7/15

4 7. What is included on the Interpreter Training assessment tests? You will test in English skills, writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary. The total time for the three tests is approximately 2.5 hours. You have to take the tests even if you already took ENG 101 and ENG 102 and even if you have a bachelor s degree. One of the reasons is that English is the source language for interpreters, and you need to be very skilled to be able to interpret to and from it. Your score needs to be higher than that required by ENG 101 entrance (5 points higher on the writing sample). For fee information, see the Learning Assessment Center. 8. Can I get proficiency credit for SGN classes I ve taken? You can arrange for a proficiency test with one of our ITP faculty members. If you receive credit through proficiency, you will submit paperwork and a fee to Registration and Records to have the credit applied to your WCC transcript. Proficiency credit that is not recorded on your transcripts will not be considered for program acceptance. Please contact Cassie Coburn at ccoburn@waubonsee.edu for more information. 9. When is it a good idea to complete ONLY the certificate? If you have a bachelor s degree or an associates degree in another field, the ITP certificate should be sufficient. 10. If I took ASL classes at another school, how do I know if I can get credit for them and/or if I need to proficiency? If you have taken sign classes at another college, you will need to complete a Transcript Evaluation Request Form. You can complete this form online through the mywcc portal. Be sure that your official transcripts are on file with Registration and Records. The transcript review process will determine whether or not you will receive credit. If the class you took transfers to Waubonsee, you do not need to proficiency. If the class you took does not transfer, you will want to meet with Cassie Coburn to discuss the option of proficiency credit. 11. Why does the program take 5 semesters? There are two semesters of SGN courses, two semesters of ITP courses and one semester of practicum. The practicum is where you start working in the field, but you will still take an online class for support.
