We are glad you have chosen CVCC to further your educational goals. This packet provides information to assist you with the admissions and selection process for the Dental Hygiene program. Please carefully review all information provided in this packet. Additional information can be found on the CVCC website. General Information For general information related to the profession of dental hygiene, refer to the Bureau of Labor Statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor at What is the class schedule/length for the Dental Hygiene program? The dental hygiene core courses are offered only during the day on a full-time basis. The DH program consists of seven semesters, which requires two years to complete after all program pre-requisites are satisfied. Graduates of the program are eligible, with the approval of the Dental Hygiene Program Director, to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and the CITA Examination, as well as other state or regional Dental Hygiene Board Examinations depending upon requirements. Please Note: Graduates applying for NC Licensure will be required to undergo a criminal records check and fingerprinting. Admission: The Dental Hygiene program begins in the Fall Semester. Admission to the program is based upon completion of all minimum requirements as listed on the attached Minimum Admission Requirements- MARs page by the specified deadline date and the competitive selection process. To begin the admissions process, attend a Starting Points Information Session, complete the admission file (see #1 on MARs page), and meet with an admissions staff member in Student Services. 1

2 Costs: College tuition is set by the North Carolina State Legislature and is subject to change. Dental Hygiene students are required to purchase a variety of books, instruments, clinic uniforms, malpractice insurance, accident insurance, and other fees as set by the College. The approximate cost for the Dental Hygiene program is $6,000 (this figure reflects in-state tuition rates), plus testing, licensure fees, and equipment costs of approximately $5, See page 12 for additional information on costs. Financial Aid: All applicants are encouraged to apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For information on financial aid, contact the Financial Aid Office at or visit Computer Access: Coursework requires ready access to the Internet and to a reliable computer with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and internet access. Upon application to CVCC, students are assigned a CVCC address. It is the responsibility of the student to open this account and read it frequently as the College provides crucial program information through this account. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CVCC Your CVCC account is the primary method of communication between the College and you. Please check your CVCC regularly. You will be notified by CVCC of your accepted or non-accepted status via CVCC within 2-3 months after the deadline date for your program. Program Goals and Competencies: To view information regarding program goals and competencies for the Dental Hygiene program, go to the following link: Criminal Background Check: Carefully read the information below regarding background checks, drug testing, and the result of a negative background check. Some clinical rotation facilities will require students to undergo criminal background checks and/or drug testing. Clinical facilities may refuse access to clinical experiences based on the criminal background checks and/or drug testing. This may have a negative impact on program progression. 2

3 PHASE 1 MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (MARs) To be considered for PHASE 2, the Competitive Selection, all applicants must complete PHASE 1 by meeting the Minimum Admission Requirements (MARs) by March 15, (When the deadline occurs on a weekend, all materials are due in Student Services office by 5:00 pm on the Friday before the deadline.) 1. ATTEND STARTING POINTS* AND COMPLETE ADMISSION FILE. To officially apply to the program, BRING ALL ITEMS that will complete your admission file and meet with an admissions staff member in Student Services. A completed admission file consists of: Current CVCC application for admission Official high school or high school equivalency transcript (waived if applicant is a graduate of a regionally accredited 2 or 4-year college). ALL official (sealed) college transcripts from ALL originating institutions. *Starting Points information is located at 2. MEET MINIMUM PLACEMENT TEST REQUIREMENTS. Placement Testing may be waived by having: College level English, math, or computer courses with a minimum grade of C. Appropriate SAT/ACT scores may waive placement tests: SAT Writing 500 Critical Reading 500 Math 580 MINIMUM SCORE REQUIREMENTS ARE: IMPORTANT: ACT English 21 Reading 21 Math 25 COMPASS ASSET CPT Writing 70 Writing 41 Writing 86 Reading 81 Reading 41 Reading 80 Algebra 46 Elementary Algebra 41 Elementary Algebra 55 Applicants who do not meet the above minimum scores must enroll and complete the appropriate developmental courses by the end of fall semester prior to the March 15 deadline. Note: this additional course work must be added to the student s list of MARs to be completed by the deadline date. Placement test results are valid for three (3) years. 3. COMPLETE SHADOWING REQUIREMENT. All applicants must shadow a licensed Dental Hygienist. (Minimum of 4 hours per day on 3 separate days or the equivalent of 12 hours; contact Connie Preiser in the Dental Hygiene Department for Shadowing Questions.) Use the enclosed Dental Hygiene Shadowing Documentation form. Return this form to Student Records in Student Services. 4. MEET REQUIRED CVCC GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA). Prior or currently enrolled CVCC students must have a minimum cumulative (overall) GPA or program GPA of 2.00 on all CVCC coursework. 3

4 5. COMPLETE REQUIRED GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES (minimum grade of C required). IMPORTANT NOTE: Substitution information is provided as a general guideline. Substitution courses are subject to change without notice. BIO 163 (BIO 168 & 169 or BIO 165 & 166 will substitute for BIO 163. Note: must complete both courses in a sequence with a C of higher to allow substitution) BIO 175 (No substitution for BIO 175; if BIO 275 has already been completed, applicant may contact Emily Whiteley, Department Head for Biology, to request an Advanced Placement exam for BIO 175; advanced placement of BIO 175 is not guaranteed. CVCC s blanket substitutions do not apply to BIO 175 for the Dental Hygiene program.) CHM 130 and CHM 130A (CHM 131 & 131A = CHM 130/130A. Note: must complete both CHM 131/131A & CHM 132 with a C or higher to allow substitution/ this pair is recommended for students who wish to eventually pursue a bachelor s degree.) COM 110 (COM 120 or COM 231 will substitute for COM 110) ENG 111 ENG 114 or (112 or 113) PSY 150 SOC COMPLETE THE PSB EXAM FOR HEALTH OCCUPATIONS. See the attached PSB Exam Information sheet for instructions about the PSB exam. Applicants may also take the PSB exam at other test sites. Official PSB scores must be submitted to CVCC no later than the specified deadline date. We strongly suggest taking the PSB after the General Education courses, especially the sciences, have been completed. 7. SUBMIT THE COMPLETED MARS SHEET TO STUDENT RECORDS. Once the MARS sheet is completed turn in the sheet to Student Records. Applicants not admitted for Fall 2015 must see an admissions staff member in Student Services to re-apply for a future year. CVCC does NOT use waiting lists for any health program. Health program applicants must re-apply for each year they wish to be considered for admission. 5 DENTAL HYGIENE - Competitive Selection for Dental Hygiene Applicants who meet all of the minimum admission requirements shown on the previous page will be considered for admission using a competitive selection process. (Please see the enclosed sample tally sheet to see how points are assigned in each area.) Criterion 1: Assignment of Points for all General Education Courses in the DH Program Criterion 2: PSB Exam (a) An applicant may take the PSB Examination once per academic year (August 1 st -July 31 st ). (c) Applicants must take the PSB examination prior to the March 15 th deadline. (d) An applicant will be awarded points according to his/her performance on the PSB Examination..For applicants who have tested more than once, the higher score will be used. Optional Bonus Points: Work Experience as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA). This is not required for admission into the program. Proof of current Certification from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) and evidence of employment should be sent to the address shown below. Employment verification must be on company letterhead. Work experience prior to obtaining DANB certification will not be considered. The Dental Hygiene program plans to accept 18 applicants. AFTER initial acceptance, but prior to the first day of class, applicants are REQUIRED to: Attend an orientation session with the Dental Hygiene Program Director and Faculty, at which time the student will be provided with information concerning other program requirements including: Healthcare Provider CPR certification, health examination form certifying that he/she appears to be able to participate in the activities of a health profession in a clinical setting, instruments, and additional program costs. If initially accepted into the Dental Hygiene program, the School of Health and Public Services will provide the student with additional information on these requirements. If any of these requirements are not met, the student will not be allowed to enter the DH program. 7 DENTAL HYGIENE - PSB Information The PSB (Psychological Services Bureau) Exam is specifically designed for those students entering education programs for health professions. The PSB Exam is comprised of a series of tests that measure abilities, knowledge, and aptitudes considered important for successful performance of students in a health program. Dental Hygiene applicants take the PSB for Health Occupations. The PSB is a timed examination and there is a fee. Following is the series of tests which comprise the PSB Exam: Academic Aptitude (verbal, arithmetic, nonverbal) Spelling Reading Comprehension Information in the Natural Sciences Vocational Adjustment Index (scores in this area are not used in the competitive admissions process) Important information regarding the PSB: Scores achieved in the areas listed above, with the exception of the Vocational Adjustment Index, are just one of the criteria used for admission into the program. Results are not pass/fail. PSB scores are valid for three (3) years; however, a hard copy of PSB scores can only be reproduced for up to one year. If a hard copy cannot be obtained, you will need to re-take the PSB Test. An applicant may take the PSB Exam once per academic year (August 1 st July 31 st ). (For applicants who have tested more than once, the higher score will be used.) Scores prior to Jan will not be considered. For better overall PSB performance, it is recommended that the applicant take the PSB exam after the science courses have been completed. To take the PSB Exam: The PSB test is given by appointment only. Contact CVCC Testing Center to schedule a PSB appointment at 828/ , extension Pay the fee in the CVCC Business Office. The Business Office will provide a receipt of payment. Take the receipt of payment with you to the CVCC Testing Center when you take the test. You will not be allowed to test without the receipt of payment. Picture ID is required to take the PSB. If you have taken the PSB for Health Occupations, for a different medical program, within the last three (3) months, you may have your scores re-normed for Dental Hygiene, instead of taking the test again. There is a fee for having the score re-normed, which you pay in the Business Office. If your scores are over three (3) months old, you must re-test. (Fee is subject to change.) 8 DENTAL HYGIENE - Essential Program Requirements The following shows examples of the kind of activities a student in the Dental Hygiene program will be required to perform in order to successfully complete the program. ISSUE STANDARD EXAMPLE Occupational Exposure The dental hygiene student may be exposed to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, latex and medicinal preparations. Students shall use appropriate precautions at all times. Communication Visual Mobility Motor Skills Cognitive/Critical Thinking Written, verbal & auditory communication skills to permit effective interaction with others. Visual acuity sufficient to read medical information and assess dental conditions. Sufficient mobility to maneuver in small areas. Fine and gross motor skills sufficient to perform complex psychomotor tasks. Cognitive ability sufficient to recognize deviations from normal, co-diagnose, and plan treatment. Provide care, using standard precautions, for a client/patient with a communicable disease. Communicate with staff members, patients and other students while wearing high filtration masks. Ascertain medical/dental history information. Monitor patient needs during treatment. Provide individualized homecare instructions. Annotate chart entries on paper and/or computerized medical records. Assess intraoral conditions. Interpret dental radiographs. Access patient within confines of dental operatory and radiographic room, which involves a variety of sitting & standing positions, including bending, twisting and reaching. Access darkroom for development of radiographs. Exploring and scaling teeth with small diameter instruments. Manipulating power-driven instruments. Placing dental radiographs. Respond quickly & appropriately to medical emergencies. Utilize assessment information to identify pathology, individualize treatment, and suggest referral when necessary. Contact any dental professional to arrange your shadowing. Shadowing sessions do not have to be with the same office. Applicants are exempt from shadowing if they provide proof of one of the following (check all that apply): Graduation from a one-year Dental Assisting program. Work or have worked in a dental practice that employs dental hygienists for at least 6 months. (Employment verification must be on dental office letterhead.)
